Products that need a rehaul of their packaging, to make them easier to use?

Metanium. A thick yellow cream for baby's bum. I have been using a little for menopausal itches. But the packaging is a disaster! A flimsy metallic tube that splits at the sides, so that you have cream coming out everywhere. I don't want to waste the cream, so have put the tube in a little plastic bag. It's still incredibly messy to use though. When this finishes, I'll go back to a sturdy tub of Sudocrem, which is frankly the superior product anyway.

Superglue (any brand of) - the glue dribbles out and the lid ends up being stuck on. Again, messy and wasteful to use. And because I'm dyspraxic, I've stuck my fingers together more than once BlushBlushBlush

Is it just me?

Child proof can be on another level. If a fit middle aged woman can't open them that is a serious fail, they are human proof.

WellThisIsFun1 · 19/10/2023 13:29

Tents.

All tents.

I suppose it's a bit like that (apocryphal?) Yosemite Park Ranger explaining why it's hard to design a bear-proof bin: "There is a considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists" — I guess there must also be an overlap between the strongest, most coordinated small children and a fair chunk of able-bodied adults.

Oh thanks for this thread - i have just sent an email to Johnson and Johnson's contact lenses company. I wear daily disposal contact lenses. Each lenses comes in a case which is a strip of 5 cases, you could just pull each lenses you want every day off the strip. Now they have changed the packaging and you cant tear the case off you need a scissors to cut it off, or run the risk of opening all five lenses at a time. Like why change? It was working before? And even more annoying price has gone up

The upside down bottles of mayonnaise! It’s fine when it’s full but completely useless if you want to get the last remnants out!!

If you like spicy mayo add some hot sauce to the remains of the mayo bottle and shake it for all your worth.
Nandos med peri works well.

I agree with bacon , pasta and rice packages , also ground or bean coffee packs.

Water in a can 😕 so I can't buy one, take a few sips and put it into my bag for later, I have to drink it all in one go or be left carrying a bloody can about

I've seen water in a can.
It's definitely a thing

Theoldcuriosityshop · 19/10/2023 13:39

After using superglue, before you put the lid back on put the nozzle under the tap, the water seals the nozzle but it's easy getting the screw lid back off when you need it. When you can't get the lid off a jar, put a rubber glove on then try, for some reason it works every time. Or give the jar a sharp tap on a hard surface, it breaks the seal.

You can also do the same but with a little bit of veg oil. Not too much, or it'll end up too runny, but (assuming it was fairly thick to start with, and not one of those low fat types… I don't know what would happen if you tried to add oil to light mayo) you can add just enough so that when you shake it all together vigorously the oil joins in the emulsification party, loosening it up just enough to settle at the bottom and squirt more easily, while still being just about solid enough to work as mayonnaise.

The result of childproof lids is that once I've wrested open a bleach bottle or whatever (or got DH to do it) I never screw it back into the lock position again. So that's a design fail.

namechange55465 · 19/10/2023 13:43

The fucking Jus-Rol croissants. The instructions are ON THE CAN YOU RIP OPEN. So unreadable by the time you've opened the packet.

Ladybughouse · 19/10/2023 13:43

Mine is the water bottle lid. I just twist off. Because it gets on my nerves, always slips when I am pouring in glass.
Also why can’t you buy bottles with loose tablets ( aspirin/ibuprofen/ paracetamol) I’m sure you use to be able too. Is it safety to stop overdosing?
Plus the half empty containers, why so big. Just use a smaller container.

The plastic wrap on cucumbers drives me mad!

Ah the cucumber condom. Bane of my life rolling that thing up and down every day.

Mothew · 19/10/2023 13:47

It's admirable that companies are using less plastic packaging (could just be cost cutting though Hmm) I've been incensed lately at frozen veg in bags that are quite frankly too small. As soon as I've cut them open, the peas or whatever are right at the top of the bag, spilling out, and I have to then put them (and their bag) into a large food bag, so using another layer of plastic.

Nutellaonall · 19/10/2023 13:50

Johnson’s baby shampoo need to go back to the way it Was. The new bottles cannot travel as they just open when light touched and leak everywhere.

70sDuvet · 19/10/2023 13:55

Paper straws in massive plastic cups even when you are sitting in....why? So I have to try and slurp up a smoothie from a soggy straw that is absolutely no use at all while 50x the plastic is in the cup when I could have a glass and possibly a reusable straw. (I do usually remember to bring my own)

I have a friend who works for a major toy company and I was forever complaining to them about the shittyness of the boxes and how the toys never went back in once set up and how it should be brought up with HO.

They laughed and said I was too OCD. THEN THEY had children.......they got my point.....still shitty boxes though. But I did try!

Ryansmrs · 19/10/2023 13:56

Simple shower gel. The new bottle is very hard to get any shower gel out of. The old style bottle was much easier, goodness knows why they changed it!

LiftyLift · 19/10/2023 13:57

Such a good point. No one wants second hand toys with cellotaped boxes.

Peanut butter jars that make it really hard to scrape out all the peanut butter.

I was coming on to say Sunpat peanut butter, which is a stupidly shaped jar with a bulge at the bottom making it impossible to scrape all the peanut butter out.

Child proof plastic tubs with liquid washing capsules in them are a nightmare to nightmare to open and close and some of the capsule tabs leak- I’ve gone back to washing powder.

Surely the whole point of being child proof is that it’s difficult to open!

Barneysma2 · 19/10/2023 14:02

Corned beef in them stupid tins where you have to wrap the key around the top of the tin to open it

Crunchymum · 19/10/2023 14:04

Not sure if they've already been mentioned but the Innocent Kids drinks. Those pathetic paper straws aren't strong enough so poke the drink open so we end up with a squashed straw / scissors to open and drink decanted to a cup.

To be fair I don't buy them often but the kids love them so I grab them when on offer. I should know better by now!!

PurplePanther1 · 19/10/2023 11:27

Cucumbers that are vacuum packed. I struggle to roll the plastic off them. Ehy do cucumbers need any packaging? You can easily wash it before you eat it.

I slice off the length of chunk I need, through the plastic, then turn it sideways and make a very shallow cut along plastic and cucumber to open it out completely. It’s rare you need your cucumber to emerge pristine from the package.

CurlewKate · 19/10/2023 14:09

@Pandor Peanut butter-rinse out the jar into any vaguely Asian dish. Good in instant ramen too.

Corned beef tins
Wonder how many a&e trips there have been Grin

I thought that when I was very carefully trying to get the Corned beef out of the tin the other day. Apart from being terrified of the extremely sharp edges, the opening is too near the bottom and it all stays in the can when you open it so you have to try and get it out with a knife.

Simply donate your unfinished peanut butter jar to your nearest pet rat. It'll be sparkling clean before you know it.
