Products that need a rehaul of their packaging, to make them easier to use?

Metanium. A thick yellow cream for baby's bum. I have been using a little for menopausal itches. But the packaging is a disaster! A flimsy metallic tube that splits at the sides, so that you have cream coming out everywhere. I don't want to waste the cream, so have put the tube in a little plastic bag. It's still incredibly messy to use though. When this finishes, I'll go back to a sturdy tub of Sudocrem, which is frankly the superior product anyway.

Superglue (any brand of) - the glue dribbles out and the lid ends up being stuck on. Again, messy and wasteful to use. And because I'm dyspraxic, I've stuck my fingers together more than once BlushBlushBlush

Is it just me?

Bloody Egberts coffee jars, where coffee grains spill all over surfaces and floor.

Wrapping foil with these open here arrows that invariably don't work and get stuck.

KickingEAP · 19/10/2023 12:27

Mini vaseline pots!

Turn the tap on.

Most handbags don't have indoor plumbing. Problem not solved (or read, c'mon now).

Plastic packaging for carrying water bottles

Likewise

Cardboard packaging for carrying multi-packs of pop

Pick them up and watch them roll over supermarket aisle

Oh and those new Coca Cola-brand bottles where the lid stays attached to the bottle so your nose, chin or cheek gets squashed and scratched by the edges of the lid while you're trying to drink your Dr Pepper.
I mean if they actually cared about recycling, why didn't they just go with better-made reusable bottles (washable at high temperatures) and coin-operated post-mix refill stations?

I am sorry to say that attached lids will become law next year and everyone will have to have them

From July 2024

What is the new EU law on bottle caps?
The EU regulation

The EU Directive 2019/2024 requires single-use plastic beverage bottles with a capacity of up to 3 liters to be fitted with caps that remain on the container throughout its service life from July 2024. The goal: closures should no longer end up in the environment or be lost for recycling

Knight and Wilson hair dye - the applicator has holes all around the top and it squirts out in all directions when trying to use it and ends up all over the bathroom!

Napolina tins - the company that do chopped tomatoes, chickpeas etc. I stopped buying them after the ring pulls on their tins kept snapping off, which is annoying as they're often on special offer.
I don't think I've had this issue with other brands.

Branston beans / beans &sausages have recently introduced ring pulls. We probably use 3 cans a week and I've never successfully opened a can with the ring pull. Have to get the can opener out every time.

Basically any food (or anything else really) wrapped in heat sealed plastic. It maybe convenient for the food processor/retailer, but it's a nightmare for the customer and awful for the environment.

For things like cooked meats, pies, etc., I try to buy from the counter where they wrap in paper bag rather than from the chiller cabinets where it's packed in heat sealed plastics. (Or even better, buy from an independent butcher rather than a supermarket).

Wet wipes with the flimsy plastic to cover it back. End up with so many packs of dried out wet wipes because they lose their stickiness and don't stay down

Store them upside down.

Wild deodorant. So much product left in the packaging.

And capri sun with their environmentally friendly paper straws that aren't capable of puncturing the carton. I've stopped buying them in protest.

Fussy deodorant is much better. When it's nearly finished I dig out what's left and apply with fingers. No waste at all.

I have never had one of these in my life or known they existed, and I have provided a lot of urine samples (3 pregnancies) and lived all over the place.

That's weird… I've almost always been given one of these along with the piss tube and the sample bag, either to use in their loo or to take home with me, whenever my GP needs a sample. Never been pregnant though. They must assume that pregnant women find it easier to direct and collect their piss Hmm Either that, or I personally exude an air of piss incompetence and get special treatment.

I really hope I don't smell of wee.

The upside down bottles of mayonnaise! It’s fine when it’s full but completely useless if you want to get the last remnants out!!

Crikeyisthatthetime · 19/10/2023 12:40

@DumboHimalayan yes! Took me ages to find the cooking time on my pasta last night.
Also alcohol content of wine. I want 12 and under, not 14. Have to turn umpteen bottles around in the supermarket to find something I can drink.
Also clothes washing instructions - the temperature is in teeny tiny letters. I had to find my glasses and switch my phone torch on yesterday!

FartNRoses · 19/10/2023 12:41

Resealable pasta packets! I have never been able to reseal it!!!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/10/2023 12:41

Bits of paper between slices of cheese that stick to the cheese and don't help at all in separating full slices. Confused

Graciebobcat · 19/10/2023 12:42

Any beauty product in a pump action where you can't unscrew the lid, and doesn't have a proper lid and leaks everywhere. Fuck the fucking fuck off. Wasteful and shit, just stop it.

BodegaSushi · 19/10/2023 12:43

Not so much packaging as placement: buying the nice freshly made sushi in the plastic box but the price tag is stuck to the bottom so you have to turn it upside down and cause a mess with any sushi with crispy onions/sauce on top 😤

Better than right way up ones though, IME.
Which reminds me - bottles of thick substances such as conditioner with rounded lids so you can't stand them upside down to make getting it out a bit easier especially at the end.

Fandangoes · 19/10/2023 12:44

Maybelline Eraser concealer - there are so many layers of ultra sticky plastic shrink wrapping on these it takes me about half an hour to get into one. I would stop buying them if I could find anything else I like as much!

And very often the sheer act of trying to get in breaks the twist mechanism that makes the product fill the spongey applicator!!!

Georgeandzippyzoo · 19/10/2023 12:45

I don't complain about stuff officially just normally whinge at home but !!Comfort Pure!! got the email!
Their bottles had a deep lid (photo 1) which could be used to measure the conditioner, pour into the drawer, replace on bottle and any drips fell back into the bottle. A great design.
New design (photo 2). Lid is tiny. Holds about 40ml of liquid. If you do try and use it, the design means any drips now runs down the outside of the bottle.
I emailed and complained and the reply was

'we are sorry to hear your issue. To make it easier You could pour the Comfort into another measurable receptacle and use that.'

No shit sherlock!! It also means that I then have a claggy 'receptacle' hanging about or one that I have to rinse everytime!

I've used Comfort for at least 10yrs but have changed now!

Lots of things where you need to turn the package upside down to read the info, dislodging breadcrumbs etc etc.
worse - packaging with relevant info such as cooking instructions on the inside of the label.

Graciebobcat · 19/10/2023 12:46

Labels stuck on stuff, particularly when you want to give it as a gift or wear shoes without stupid labels stuck to the sole. Plastic hanging crappy hooks stapled to gift bags that rip it when you take it off. Wrapping paper rolls with labels sticking them shut that rips half the paper when you take them off Sainsbury's

Do companies not test this stuff? Just stop it.

OneTC · 19/10/2023 12:47

Filters for roll your own cigarettes. Why do I need 144 of them?

Anything that comes in that packaging that requires what is inside the packaging to open that packaging. Scissors, tools, Stanley knives etc

Graciebobcat · 19/10/2023 12:48

Instructions on things which are unreadable to anyone over the age of 47 because they are in 5 font and white text on a light blue background. What about accessibility? I thought things were supposed to be in big print so more people can read them. I've had to go and buy cheap reading glasses purely because of this nonsense.

RenoDakota · 19/10/2023 12:49

Toothbrushes and pens that come in the same impenetrable packaging (cardboard back, plastic front).
Similarly, but to a lesser degree, ready made sandwich packets.
