Worried about role- overthinking?

Just received an email from my manager this evening. (Shouldn't have checked emails)
We have a compulsory meeting tomorrow about our department by the head of department, invite sent out this afternoon about changes to our department.
This evening I saw an email from my manager about how these changes will affect my role- argh - it was a very formal email and he's informal.
Now I'm worried. I'll have been there 2 years in Nov. I chatted with him today and all was good.
Aibu to be concerned?
Note to self don't check emails in the evening!

That type of approach usually means redundancies (I'm an HR Director) but its hard to give advice as it really depends on what your line managers email said. It would be unusual for them to preempt anything before the announcement, so the formality doesn't necessarily mean much (there could be some box ticking going on) it's the content that's important

He asked I make time for this meeting so he can " walk me through what the announcement means for my role"
Sounds bad right?

It could mean changes to your role and expectations either because your current role will be being lost or because other roles being lost will mean your role now has more responsibility

It will be formal so that if it ends up in tribunal etc then nothing could be misconstrued

determinedtomakethiswork · 18/10/2023 22:52

Was it specifically written to you or did it go out to everyone in the department?

CyberCritical · 18/10/2023 23:00

Don't panic till you know exactly what is happening.

I've been 'At risk of redundancy' 5 times and each time I've found a better role within the company either because it's been a prompt to apply for roles or because the team restructure has opened up new possibilities.

It is a formal process so communications are formal but that doesn't mean it's guaranteed to have a bad result.

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz12 · 18/10/2023 23:03

Not necessarily, it could just be some changes

WorkCleanRepeat · 18/10/2023 23:14

I had something similar happen recently in a restructure. There were 4 senior managers on a call with me about "the changes to my role" ahead of a company announcement. In reality nothing has really changed!

I wouldn't worry until you have more details.

theduchessofspork · 18/10/2023 23:18

Could be anything - could you be you are at risk of redundancy and have to reapply, could be you are going to be part of a new team. It does sound like some people are being sacked off, but from that email there’s no reason to think it’s you.

No matter what happens, you'll find your feet in the end. So many of us have lost jobs and gone on to find better. Try and rest for tomorrow

Stressedgiraffe · 19/10/2023 07:02

I've had a look at the 1st meeting invitees and it's either going to be okish or they are making everyone redundant.
Will update later

I had this exact thing a few months ago, it was unfortunately redundancies. Doesn't necessarily mean you would be made redundant though.

Stressedgiraffe · 19/10/2023 08:58

Well we had our meeting. Complete restructuring, line management and job descriptions changing. My current manager will explain further later.
Not feeling confident or inspired.
Let's see what happens later

Fingers crossed you'll be ok x

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz12 · 19/10/2023 11:30

I hope everything works out ok OP xx

Stressedgiraffe · 19/10/2023 17:36

Well I had a chat with my manager and I'm moving to a different line manager and get a more senior title but no more money. I now report to 2 people both head of xx and my old other boss maybe made redundant.
Hopefully day to day work will stay the same.
He's as confused as I am.
But still employed so that's good!

At least you're ok for now x
