Why, oh why ?

Why are all the posts about the Israeli Gaza conflict removed ?? Why is mumsnet censoring our right to an opinion. Do you think we are children ?? Every single post I have contributed to on this dreadful subject had been deleted. We all have opinions , we all have a right to speak, we may not be in agreement but ffs we all hold valid views. The world is in chaos but Mumsnet censors our speech. We need to appeal to everyone to think critically, to question the media, to speak out loud. Or do we just turn a blind eye and think of fluffy kittens ? Moderators please answer this.

Well, it depends if they are in the context of 'AIBU', surely?

Livinginanotherworld · 18/10/2023 20:34

It matters not the context, AIBU to ask why our speech is censored ??

Well MNHQ own any page here that begins with www.mumsnet.com so they get the final say on what posts they do or don't allow and can delete them as they wish.

You have the option to vote with your feet and go elsewhere on the internet to one of the countless forums where you can post what you want.

Mumsnet | The UK’s most popular website for parents | Mumsnet

Mumsnet makes parents’ lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers.

The poor MNHQ mods have a hell of a time. The threads are really good, informative and interesting. They are also trolled, antisemitic/islamophobic and full of misinformation.

The issue is that mods either have to be experts on the ME AND prejudice and delete troll posts or just delete the threads.

I'd prefer a topic on it, only allowing posters with a history, maybe 6 months prior membership, to post.

crumblylancs · 18/10/2023 20:58

Personally I'd like to see a topic for it rather than the million threads a day popping up saying mainly the same things just with a different title.

Yes, and no name changing allowed.

HateMyselfToo · 18/10/2023 21:04

They're not censoring your speech, they're deciding what they do and don't want on their website.

MassageForLife · 18/10/2023 21:07

"Why is mumsnet censoring our right to an opinion,?"

I can't begin to imagine how that could possibly be the case.

So in fact censoring speech

You won't get a sensible answer on here, OP.

ssd · 18/10/2023 21:08

Id like a facility here to discriminate first time posters and longer term posters, but what it would be i have no clue

Why are all the posts about the Israeli Gaza conflict removed ??

They're not; those I've just checked have 694, 210 and 542 posts respectively

It's true quite a few entire threads have gone, but if last night's demented outcry over something that may or may not have happened - to say nothing of the widespread antisemitism - is any guide that's pobably no bad thing

And if "every single post" you've contributed has been zapped it might be worth having a read of the Talk Guidelines?

Lookingatthesunset · 18/10/2023 21:22

Are you really that surprised when you read some of the posts??

SaracensMavericks · 18/10/2023 21:23

Some of the threads have not been removed.

WillowCraft · 18/10/2023 21:25

Probably because of misinformation whipping up hysteria. Any reputable social media site should be moderating content to ensure fiction isn't presented as fact to whip up hate against particular groups.

You can say what you want and think what you want in the privacy of your own home but you don't have the right to spread misiformation on a worldwide platform.

Sparklesocks · 18/10/2023 21:26

Surely there are limits - is a violation of free speech for them to censor antisemitic or Islamophobic posts? In an ideal world posters would engage in civilised debate but unfortunately not everyone is capable of nuanced discussion on those threads, and some of them descend into that/a bunfight/both.

Livinginanotherworld · 18/10/2023 21:08

My name has never changed

I never suggested it has. But I think it would be useful going forward to not allow name changing on threads about this conflict, so that new members who may have just joined MN to stir things up can be more easily spotted. There was a lot of that in the early days of the invasion of Ukraine, too.

IClaudine · 18/10/2023 21:32

I think MNHQ did the right think zapping most of the threads from last night, there was so much misinformation being spouted as fact and a lot of hatred.

Ok fair enough, I see your point.

Yes I am surprised, we should be able to have a civil debate about it, we may not agree but that does not mean these threads should be deleted. Some posters have said about the misinformation in them, well that again is a debatable point, which media do you believe? Which government is spreading misinformation ? Critical thinking guys please !

OP posts:
EvilElsa · 18/10/2023 21:37

Because they descend into awful, hate filled inaccurate bile and become troll central. Unfortunately discussion becomes lost amongst that.

IClaudine · 18/10/2023 22:10

Livinginanotherworld did you read any of the threads last night? There was disinformation from both sides of the conflict and a few ghoulish posts that were purely designed to upset.

Edited

I think what’s going on is already “designed to upset” hell, we should all be upset, it’s abhorrent that we watch war crimes in real time but ssshhhh, nobody should get upset.

So you didn't start this thread for answers? You just wanted an argument?

This is a moderated site that relies on advertising - it's not a forum for free speech - and free speech doesn't mean you post any old made up or offensive shit either - unless you want to by censored - hth
