To get a tv in my bedroom at 41 years old?

bigcheeseygrin · 18/10/2023 19:59

I've never had a tv in my bedroom, apart from when I was a child, and then it was purely set up for my games console.

I wasn't allowed one in my room as a teenager, and now it does feel like it would be wrong to have one in there!

But... I don't enjoy watching tv in my living room. I can't lounge properly the way it's set up.

Does anyone else feel that tv's have no place in the bedroom? Or am I missing out by not have doing it years ago?

I love the TV in my bedroom. We used to have one in our bedroom in old house, and then DS2 was born and he is such a light sleeper that even once he moved into his own room (next to ours) the TV would wake him.

So we did the only sensible things and moved house Smile - being sure to choose one where the mater bedroom was some distance from the other bedrooms.

Now I pretty much exclusively watch TV in bed, very rare to sit downstairs. Especially in the winter, it's cozy tucked up in bed and we have dual controlled heating so I don't need to put the heating on upstairs (where the kids are asleep) and downstairs.

I think I get more sleep too, before I was always falling asleep on the sofa and I would wake up and go to bed and then couldn't sleep. Now I fall asleep in bed and just press the power button on the remote in a half sleep state.

I'm sure there are lots of people who don't like them, or who it wouldn't work for. But as other posters have said, you're an adult and life is short - if you want a TV, have one!

FiddleLeaf · 18/10/2023 21:01

We’ve recently installed one and I LOVE it. I get ready to BBC Breakfast in the morning & put on YouTube to put away laundry. Keeps me off the phone!

EmbraWumman · 18/10/2023 21:05

I'm 46 & never have had a bedroom telly in my life but, after spending 10 years on a sofa bed so my kids could have a room each, when my eldest moved out she left the telly on the wall. It's old (was the living room telly over a decade ago!) but new enough to get a Roku thing which means it can stream Netflix etc and I spend a lot of time in heaven... A bed and a telly 🤣 I'm also single Mum to a teen so it means she and her gang can have the LRm.
Do it!!

CantFindTheBeat · 18/10/2023 21:07

I have TV or streaming options in pretty much the whole house.

I love, love, love watching TV, background noise, box sets, the news, sci fi, wherever I am.

I even go to sleep with it on.

Do it!

KickHimInTheCrotch · 18/10/2023 21:11

It's not for me. I don't watch a lot of telly and when I do I like us to watch things together. I don't like the idea of us all being in seperate rooms watching different things plus I don't like the idea of falling asleep in front of the telly. But everyone's different- if you want to do then go for it.

Bellyblueboy · 18/10/2023 21:13

I wasn’t allowed a tv in my bedroom until I was 17 and I bought it myself!

I haven’t had a tv in my room as a proper adult. Don’t know why - i have just never wanted one.

but if you want one get one! That is the joy of adulthood - we can make up our own rules!

TheHawkisHowling · 18/10/2023 21:15

I love mine. I have a big one at the foot of my bed. Bag of crisps and my heated throw, I'm in heaven.

DeadBugMountainClimber · 18/10/2023 21:15

If I had my way, I wouldn’t have one but DH likes it, so we do have one. I don’t switch it on when he’s away though.

If you want one, get one.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 18/10/2023 21:19

OP, you can get beds with TVs built into the foot board. Press a button to bring it up, or put it back down. That way you don't need a TV on the wall all the time. Admittedly I have no idea how much these beds of dreams cost!

Funnyhahaha · 18/10/2023 21:20

If you have a blank wall get a projector instead. Ours links to Netflix, Iplayer, Apple TV etc and takes a minute to set up. I love it! Big screen cinema feel and takes up no space. Only downside is room needs to be dark, but great in winter.

Mum2jenny · 18/10/2023 21:22

Go for it, I’m not a fan of TVs in a bedroom and it doesn’t work for me, but we do have one as my DH likes watching it.

PurpleMonkeys · 18/10/2023 21:30

I have one in my room. When the weather gets really cold, we basically live upstairs in our beds to stay warm and comfortable.

I'm 44.

Get on it OP.

BristolBlueGlasses · 18/10/2023 21:30

Coming from a different angle - could you just make your living room set up more TV lounging about friendly? We have a cosy sofa, a pile of cushions and blankets, side tables for snacks and drinks and a big footstool thing. PJs on, fairy lights and candles lit, feet up, just like bed but not bed.

piscofrisco · 18/10/2023 21:34

I love watching telly in bed of a winter evening. Or a Sunday morning. It's hardly a huge luxury op. Treat yourself .

NoMoreShit · 18/10/2023 20:05

I've got a TV, a mini fridge, a posh coffee machine & a decanter set of my fave port in my bedroom. It's my escape room.

What an image. You've reached peak civilization.

Are you me?

I don't watch much TV and have always been dead against a bedroom TV.

Have just done an epic u turn and had a TV put up in my bedroom.

This bad weather / being indoors makes me feel blue so I am determined to make changes to get through winter.

Films in bed with the kids, so much comfier than all being perched on the sofa.

Currently lounging on bed with MAFS on, candle lit.

Lovely & cosy.

(I am also 41!)

towriteyoumustlive · 18/10/2023 21:43

I wasn't allowed one in my room as a teenager either, so put one in my bedroom!

Except I ended up not watching it much at all, so a few weeks ago I removed it and put it in another room as a gaming TV for the kids.

I've decided reading in bed is actually preferable!

fanfictionlover · 18/10/2023 21:46

I never had one until about 18 months ago now I love it. I relax in bed watching tv of a cold evening

Davros · 18/10/2023 21:50

YourNameGoesHere I must admit that I've only had this set up for about 6 months. DH became quite ill earlier this year and I moved out of our shared room and set up another which was a snug that never got used. I wasn't happy there was a fridge in there and was going to give it away but then had an epiphany. I got my own kettle, special mugs, treats and I love it there with some nonsense on my telly. It really is a sanctuary. I also got some lovely bedding

It sounds fabulous. I'm sorry it came about due to your husband's poor health but it sounds idyllic.

EdgeK · 18/10/2023 21:56

Thought about a projector? Much less room and fuss. Needs a bit of tech know how setting it up, but very unobtrusive

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 18/10/2023 21:58

No TVs in bedrooms. No dogs on beds.

They're the rules here

To get a tv in my bedroom at 41 years old?
mondaytosunday · 18/10/2023 21:59

I hate a tv in the bedroom, but my husband wanted one. How many times do d I have him snoring next to me but as soon as I turned it off he's wake up saying 'I was watching that'! I'm a widow now and only one tv in the living room.

2023shady · 18/10/2023 22:00

I have a small one that I got as a back up, in my bedroom. Never used it. Then I had spinal surgery and realised it had a DVD player so I started Buffy from the beginning again and that was my recovery
Nap, episode of Buffy, little walk, eat, nap, repeat
