To get a tv in my bedroom at 41 years old?

bigcheeseygrin · 18/10/2023 19:59

I've never had a tv in my bedroom, apart from when I was a child, and then it was purely set up for my games console.

I wasn't allowed one in my room as a teenager, and now it does feel like it would be wrong to have one in there!

But... I don't enjoy watching tv in my living room. I can't lounge properly the way it's set up.

Does anyone else feel that tv's have no place in the bedroom? Or am I missing out by not have doing it years ago?

LOL @bigcheeseygrin what constitutes negative amounts of sex? Grin

Okay, maybe not less sex, but having tv in there would mean my bedroom would possibly see some action, albeit not any taken by me Grin

I was exactly the same for years but during Lockdown (in my early 60s) when we were all stuck at home I finally relented and moved the tv from the 'playroom' (DS was 19 by then!) into my bedroom. I did feel a bit 'guilty' at the time as I'd always been anti tvs in bedrooms but it just made sense when we couldn't agree what to watch. DH and I are now both retired and this afternoon, a miserable wet day, it meant we could happily watch our own choice of programme.

See, I've been the opposite. I let my DS have one when he was about 8, but I still feel I shouldn't have one.

I've got a TV, a mini fridge, a posh coffee machine & a decanter set of my fave port in my bedroom. It's my escape room.

I've** got a full size under counter fridge, kettle and tea making materials. Biscuits, chocolate, wine and glasses, cans of Appletiser and a big fuck if telly in my room. I don't drink coffee btw

FastFood · 18/10/2023 20:28

I mean you're 41, you could have an oven and a helicopter assembly line in your bedroom if it's what you want.

I remember an old lady who opened the french doors of her bedroom every morning to let the horse of the house get in and she was damn right to do so.

Every now and then a thread comes along on here that makes me question if I am adulting right and having seen some of the posts here I think I need to up my game!

We wouldn't be without our tv in the bedroom. It's on the wall and massive so would be truly hated by many mumsnetters. 😅

Go for it OP.

InchResting · 18/10/2023 20:31

I don't have a TV at all, because I'm not interested in watching TV and never have been. I haven't even got a phone. We weren't allowed TVs in our bedrooms as children, and I've never allowed my DC to have them - but then they had laptops, phones etc so TV sort of slid into their bedrooms (though they were older).

If you want a TV in your bedroom, OP, go for it and enjoy it!

mrsbyers · 18/10/2023 20:35

Me and my husband have TV’s in our rooms (separate sleep due to his snoring and my medical issues) he watches his every night but mine is very rarely used as I’ll stay downstairs when he goes up at 9

I think this is part of my issue.

I don't like wall mounted tv's. I feel that televisions shouldn't be the focal point of a room (which is ridiculous of me, because I don't have anything else amazing on my walls!) and once i put one in my bedroom, even if not wall mounted, it will be.

Never had one as a kid or teen as wasn’t allowed, also wasn’t allowed to watch much tv. So don’t have one now but would like one, still feel like I shouldn’t. Do it op, think I might too soon 😄 feel like a rebel my mum was quite strict

Comedycook · 18/10/2023 20:39

Just do it. I love the TV in my bedroom. You're in your forties, you don't need permission from anyone

Fionaville · 18/10/2023 20:43

I love having a TV in the bedroom. I put it on as soon as I get out of the shower of an evening and watch it while I'm doing my facial routine and hair. It's a little bit of time to myself which I love. Also, when it's cold me and DH will go up to watch something in bed all cosy. What could be wrong with that?!

DramaAlpaca · 18/10/2023 20:44

I've never had a TV in the bedroom and never allowed the DC to either. Of course, the minute DS1 turned 18 he bought himself one! I'm tempted occasionally, but I prefer to read in bed.

FlagFatigue · 18/10/2023 20:45

It's your bedroom and should suit you and what you want to use the room for. You need to stop putting unnecessary rules on yourself.

We have lovely art work on our walls as well as a tv. We also have corner sofa as my teens come in and chat to me late at night when I'm in bed. It's perfect for us.

Ours is wall mounted so it's perfectly straight and at the perfect height for watching comfortably. You don't want to be turning your neck at all. If you're going to do it, make sure it's at maximum comfort level 😆

TV in the bedroom just reminds me of student digs and living in a single room. My sleep was awful until we moved into our own house with just the TV in the living room. That said when I was pregnant and probably for the first 3 months afterwards we relocated the TV to the spare bedroom so that I could enjoy a bit more comfort. After a while I started to get cabin fever and felt pended in as we didn't move as much as we would downstairs. Bringing everything we might need rather than popping into various rooms for everything over the course of the evening. A choice would be good but we only have 1 TV and don't plan on changing that

In the right situation there's nothing wrong with a TV in the bedroom especially if you are mindful of any sleep deterioration. I know we are fortunate ok having a spare room to bunker up in whilst keeping the bedroom a TV free space

Honeyroar · 18/10/2023 20:52

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/10/2023 20:16

Studies show you get less sleep and have less sex with a TV in the bedroom. So I wouldn't Grin

You get that when you hit menopause anyway, so get the tv!

Ive wanted a tv in our bedroom for ages, but we’ve never got round to getting a socket. We’re moving soon and will be doing a renovation, so it’s on my list.

Ariel896 · 18/10/2023 20:53

This sounds amazing!

See, it reminds me of a hotel room. An escape. A place to relax.

Same a TV in the same room as the bed is more hotel than student digs to me.

fearfuloffluff · 18/10/2023 20:57

I would be worried it wouldn't actually be comfortable and I'd get a crick in my neck. Or end up snacking in bed and it would be full of crumbs. Also that it might interfere with sleep.

Down to you though really.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 18/10/2023 20:57

TVs have no place in my bedroom. But I don't watch much TV, rarely watch films etc. But I also wouldn't judge anyone who wanted one! I just don't.

Ginslings · 18/10/2023 20:58

I hate having a TV in the bedroom personally.

If I'm ill, or having a duvet day, I just watch something on a laptop or tablet. I wouldn't want to have one in there all the time.

mummymayhem18 · 18/10/2023 21:00

I say go for it!! 😊
