How to deal with a chatty Co-worker?

I’m new to the job so don’t want to get on wrong footing but colleague keeps talking to me. I have to do extra work at home due to this chatting non-stop. How would you handle?

Could you speak to your manager and ask him/her to have a word with your colleague?

LlynTegid · 18/10/2023 14:02

Tell him or her you don't want to miss a deadline. Talk at first to them.

FayCarew · 18/10/2023 14:02

Headphones on and ignore her

Miamisun · 18/10/2023 14:04

Put your head set on or be honest and say oh I’m so sorry I really need to I’m with this.

Headphones (overhead ones) as they are a visual deterrent. Say you find them a help to concentrate as you can get easily distracted.

Or learn to zone out. She might be the type of person that isn't talking to you she's talking at you. Therefore if you zone out she probably won't notice much.

Just have a guess?

Joking aside just tell them you need to get on with work. You don't need to be friends with work colleagues and provided you speak in an appropriate way then no harm done. If they have a problem they're hardly likely to complain as it wouldn't look good for them. Hope it becomes better soon.

Have an honest chat with them to say you like to chat but struggle with context switching, grab a coffee and speak for five mins, then be open that you need to focus on a few things in peace - and say the headphones is a visual indicator that you are in the zone and ask not to be disturbed when wearing them
