A global peace movement

All I am seeing are decisive threads that keep getting deleted. All I am also seeing, and reading in the news, are heartbreaking accounts and images. I don’t have the answers, no one does. Where money and power are in play, there are no easy answers, perhaps we are on our way to world devastation. A terrifying thought, but a thought that has played in many of our minds. As I see it, the only way forward is a peace movement, a global peace movement. I have no political or religious allegiance, just an allegiance to all the innocents on both sides. It would take one hell of a U-turn from political parties, and a U-turn we realistically know they won’t take, without some sort of extraordinary turn of events. I can’t help thinking that this is the only way we have a chance at saving humanity.

Thanks @SerendipityJane I am pretty naive, would that be frowned upon? Why? I need to stop reading the news and hoping for a ‘solution’

In some circles, calling for a boycott has been interpreted as "anti-something".

(My DM boycotted South African produce in the 60s 70s and 80s)

No criticism is tolerated. Please be aware.

koalaknickers · 19/10/2023 13:02

Human nature has never been any different.

When I was a teen I used to imagine a peaceful world. I'm more cynical now that I see how world politics operates.

As the world gets more and more overpopulated and resources get more scarce, things will get worse not better.

I take no joy in stamping on your caring sincere thoughts by saying this, OP.

Adarajames · 19/10/2023 21:50

Will never happen, as we over populate more and more, things will get worse. One of the reasons I decided not to have kids, not fair to inflict that mess on a new generation!

MissFancyDay · 19/10/2023 21:58

If I ran the world I would abolish religion.

Theemeperorsnewclothes · 19/10/2023 22:10

Thanks for your responses. It actually makes me feel a little less crazy. I know there is no simple solution, it just helps to vent sometimes. @MissFancyDay if I ran the world right now I would also abolish anything that led to conflict/wars/the disgraceful waste of human life that we are seeing today. Religion being the biggest factor in all of that right now. The very thing that should bring understanding and peace.

I agree with you OP and I do believe it is possible to have peace. There are a few groups of people who profit financially from war and they can create terrible misery.

However, the vast majority of humans just want to live a peaceful, happy, prosperous life, to have enough to eat and a comfortable place to live, a job, and to be able to raise a family in safety and harmony with their neighbours. When we work hard to make sure everyone in the world has this, we reduce conflict.

The profiteers aren’t the ones going out holding the guns and risking their lives. There are a few psychopaths around, but most people don’t actually want to kill other humans. When the ordinary people all refuse to do it, wars will end.

I am actually hopeful. There are many voices talking about peace.

MissFancyDay · 19/10/2023 22:21

@Theemeperorsnewclothes I agree, why, for pity's sake can't people just believe in what they choose without inflicting it on other people. I can honestly say, I have never had the least desire to compel other people into thinking what I think.

Live and let live is vanishing.

And compromise, where has that gone? this present conflict will never be resolved without compromise on both sides.

Cincills · 19/10/2023 22:26

I think the key thing to break the cycle is for countries to work together towards common objectives, even if they disagree politically.

I’ve been reading t lately about how Kruschev and JFK avoided nuclear war when so many in their respective militaries were pushing for it. Both men were committed to peace and this was their approach, cooperation and collaboration and a personal relationship between those two humans.

Thanks to those 2 men, we’re still here to talk about it in 2023.

mollyfolk · 19/10/2023 22:27

Absolutely agree. Peace would be amazing. Blessings to everyone who is going to sleep tonight in a war zone.

Roste · 19/10/2023 22:42

Have you seen this report about this resignation?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/10/18/state-department-josh-paul-resignation-israel/
Maybe that’s what it takes, people on both sides saying no to those encouraging pointless wars.

Theemeperorsnewclothes · 19/10/2023 22:44

You guys are amazing. You’ve restored my faith in humanity. I was brought up in a religion that is prominent and indoctrinated (like all the dominant world religions) I choose not to be in a religion over what is going on in the world today. Peace to all, and I can’t stop thinking of those babies (young and old) who are not in their homes tonight. I won’t send prayers, I’ll send love and hope.

I agree with you about wanting global peace but there are problems such as oppression - eventually the oppressed turn to violence as they see no other way forward.
Also I don't know how peace can be enforced on the violent.
Violence usually provokes more violence.
We need peace to be in people's hearts.

Fifteenth · 19/10/2023 23:02

Global anything would be abusive.

Imagine how much power is needed to keep global peace. You really don’t want that power concentrated.

Theemeperorsnewclothes · 19/10/2023 23:06

@CherrySocks I agree. If all I had seen my whole life was violence and war and chaos and losing loved ones. I am sure I would think differently. If however a good political leader could get their people on board and get them to understand that no matter what has went on before, peace is their future saviour. However, that future leader would need to covet peace and human life above all else.

What is a global piece movement. A soundbite?

Theemeperorsnewclothes · 19/10/2023 23:08

No, it’s a piece of peace ✌️

overall Earth will always need a global military force, think of outa space and the galaxies beyond, they are not all like E,T as an example

Switcher · 19/10/2023 23:15

Ah ok got you. Peace on your terms. Cool.

Cincills · 19/10/2023 23:27

As individuals we can’t force anyone else to do anything but we can write to our political leaders and ask them to work for peace.

We can refuse to join the military and prevent the military from exhibiting at our children’s schools.

With Remembrance Day coming up, we can make sure we and our children aren’t involved in any events that glorify war and we can wear a white poppy for peace.

You don’t have to believe in God to be a Quaker, and they often organise pacifist events and nonviolent protests against militarisation, weapons companies etc, so we can link in with our local group to find out how we can help.

Imagine what could be done for humanity if the money and effort and brainpower currently wasted on war and conflict and the military could be redirected for good.

Theemeperorsnewclothes · 19/10/2023 23:29

@Switcher surely the whole premise of peace is that it needs to be on everyone’s terms?

Exactly! We need to work for compromises and solutions that are acceptable to all sides! Violence is the way that one group tries to enforce their way on the “other”.
And it never works, because it only increases the trauma and anger in the survivors.
