To be absolutely fuming at my son

His friend stayed last night. I couldn’t find my toothbrush today. Turns out it was in his bathroom - he allowed his friend to use it. I feel a disgusted but so angry. Not sure if he should be grounded or just the friend never stays ever again. He’s 12.

Surely the natural consequence is he pays for your new toothbrush?

RagzRebooted · 16/10/2023 19:56

YABU. 12 year olds can be stunningly dim sometimes.
Keep spare cheap toothbrushes. Remind child to ask next time and stress the importance of not sharing these things for hygiene reasons.
Grounding would be ridiculous.

Pottedpalm · 16/10/2023 19:56

Gross! Why would the friend want to use someone else’s bush?

LDA123 · 16/10/2023 19:56

Seems a bit OTT! Chuck the toothbrush, buy a new one (or your son can if he gets pocket money) and have a stern word to never do it again!

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/10/2023 19:56

Get a new tooth brush and an extra one.

Sirzy · 16/10/2023 19:57

Make him buy you a new toothbrush then move on. Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill

x2boys · 16/10/2023 19:57

🙄🙄

Healthkick · 16/10/2023 19:57

Yes it is. But it’s more than that. It’s really really upset me. They had to come into my bedroom, then my bathroom to take it. Disgusting g.

MrsBungle · 16/10/2023 19:58

What a massive overreaction! Just get a new tooth brush. They’re 12.

MEwhatnow · 16/10/2023 19:58

I think you need to calm down a little
12 is still young - immature and not thinking things through are part of the territory

Happiestonthebeach · 16/10/2023 19:59

Im sorry it haas upset you so much- I also hate my things been touched or moved. It’s an element of parenting I find really difficult.

I have a 12 yo boy too and find it really odd that they would do this- my son just wouldn’t brush his teeth! At least you’ve really embedded the teeth brushing!

cartagenagina · 16/10/2023 19:59

Honestly OP, as your kids become teenagers you have to learn to pick your battles.

I would be telling DS it was out of order, but to be honest I probably would have laughed at his audacity.

Buy spare toothbrushes as this could easily happen again.

lifeturnsonadime · 16/10/2023 20:00

Honestly you are overreacting.

Keep spare toothbrushes. Explain hygiene to your DS and tell him where the spare ones will be next time.

Caerulea · 16/10/2023 20:00

I'm sorry to say this isn't a rational response. I'd expect to see this filed under 'you'll not believe the gross thing my son did lol' not 'reasons to ground your child & be furious'.

Healthkick · 16/10/2023 20:00

It’s the fact I don’t feel unsure if it’s ever happened before and I’ve just not known. Ugh it genuinely makes me feel sick. Maybe I’m over reacting then. Fine I’m over sensitive about my toothbrush.

OP posts:
SaracensMavericks · 16/10/2023 20:00

I get that you're upset, but it's a massive overreaction to say his friend can't ever stay again.

NotesApp · 16/10/2023 20:00

You’re really overreacting. Get him to buy you a new one and maybe keep a few spares in the house.

BHRK · 16/10/2023 20:01

Just make him pay for the toothbrush from pocket money. It’s not a big crime, he’s just been an idiot 12! Grounding him or stopping sleepovers is a step too far

Healthkick · 16/10/2023 20:01

It wasn’t my son - it was his friend who used it.

OP posts:
bombastix · 16/10/2023 20:01

It's just a toothbrush and your son is 12. A bit dim but compared to some 12 year olds he sounds fine.

Boundoverbyacat · 16/10/2023 20:01

Do you like your child? Sure doesn’t seem so

massive over reaction, kids do stupid things. He didn’t do it to upset you

YoureALizardHarry11 · 16/10/2023 20:02

This is another reason why electric ones are useful, just change the head and move on with life rather than having to go out and buy a new one with unbrushed teeth 😃

HitsAndMrs · 16/10/2023 20:02

Jesus. Calm down, your poor son! Grounded, really?!

Melodysmum12 · 16/10/2023 20:02

Gross but you’re over reacting! Tell him it’s gross and to not do it again… buy a new one and a pack of spares for his bathroom. Easy.

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 16/10/2023 20:03

I really don’t think it’s a big deal. Explain your room and bathroom are off limits when friends are over. Buy a new toothbrush for yourself and keep a few spares. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Don’t really think with all the awful things happening in the world it’s something to be that fussed about.
