To think I’m being tracked?

Fatcat00 · 16/10/2023 19:03

Apologies, posting here for traffic.

how would I know if I’m being tracked? I have had a few passing thoughts that I’ve not thought much more of, maybe a slight gut feeling though very rarely. I’ve not spoken about this or googled it, searched it on anything etc. this is the first time I’m mentioning it.

an ad has just came up on my social media for a very very discreet gps system that has a mic, doesn’t die, magnetic, waterproof etc. about the size of a coin. Seems very odd that this kind of thing would come up on my customised ads unless someone had mentioned it around my phone or searched it within my household or around me.

would there be a way of finding out if there’s been something stuck somewhere on/in my car?

You may well be right. ( I have relevant experience). Keep a diary of anything unusual. x

TolkiensFallow · 16/10/2023 20:02

Domestic abuse charities can often signpost you to a service that will check your phone for spyware

Fatcat00 · 16/10/2023 20:06

Thanks all. Definitely going to have a look for someone with the technology to scan my car and/or phone. Can anyone possibly point me in the direction? Something just all of a sudden isn’t sitting right and normally, a woman’s gut knows when something is off!

So bizarre, the only thing I can thing that could’ve triggered it was a colleague saying “he’s stalking you” in a joke about a client a couple of days ago

Someone made a jokey comment which has made you feel a bit paranoid.

If you're genuinely concerned and have reasonable grounds, speak to the police or a counsellor.

The police offered to search my phone for tracking devices (I declined) when an abusive ex 'bumped into' me. He had a record of abuse against a previous partner though.

Can you look up about buying a small device as that may be cheaper than paying a detective agency, the one I worked at gone now was in London. Or ring a few places and get quotes. I was shocked that some people had devices put in their apartment to check was other half cheating, I found that really disturbing to be honest, was that even legal. Many others had partners followed for days to get evidence. But the most thing the agency had to do was to follow and get evidence of people who had insurance claims for an accident and saying they had a disability and they got footage of them lifting suitcases and all sorts in and out of cars. Please keep us posted, am invested now and hopefully it is nothing. How is everything in your relationship.

whynotwhatknot · 16/10/2023 20:18

sorry im confused you thnk youre being stalked because of an ad on sm?

Divebar2021 · 16/10/2023 20:18

A few years ago there was a thread where the OP discovered the user instructions for some kind of listening device that recorded to an SD or Sim card. She found the sim hidden in a power socket on her house and it had been planted there by her partner. Posters have also referred to tracking partners by planting phones in the car and tracking using find my phone.

I don’t know if a faraday bag might help you block the signal of any listening device on your phone… really really not an expert but the police use them to protect mobile devices when they’re travelling to high risk countries.

2jacqi · 16/10/2023 20:21

yes you can get bug finders and do a sweep of your car and your house. then take your phone to a good techy and get them to check you phone. if you have the funds maybe get a new phone and number/ and change all passwords and even wifi account

As well as the tech side of things, can you do as PP suggested and do a few things out of routine/character and see if you are questioned around it?

I often just think things and then the exact thing comes up as an ad.

Other times I know my phone is in my bag and something I talked about turns up as an ad.

I think this happens to us all.

I agree.
It's really weird the thinking of something.
Recently in company we were talking about something really obscure.
E Voila - the next day an ad linked to it came up.

TravelInHope · 16/10/2023 20:55

I’m tracking you.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/10/2023 21:10

If you have an iPhone and have find my iPhone enabled it will then you if an air tag is traveling around with you

saltinesandcoffeecups · 16/10/2023 21:32

Now we’re all going to be seeing tracking device ads.

Createausername1970 · 16/10/2023 21:48

I don't know how to search for one, but if I were in your situation I would be tempted to lay false trails and see what happened.

If you think it's in your car, instead of driving to work, leave the car somewhere else, preferably on the bus route so you could hop on a bus and finish your journey. Maybe leave it in a hospital car park for a few hours on another day.

If you think it's hidden in the house, have a few pretend phone conversations that it could overhear - tell the non-existant person on the other end that you are getting a dog/you are pregnant/you have inherited lots of money.

If you think your phone is bugged, buy a cheap new one so you can make phone calls in emergencies, and leave your main one at home.

Then see if any of this crops up elsewhere.

topnoddy · 16/10/2023 21:57

And how exactly is anyone on here going to know if you are being tracked then ?

bigbish · 16/10/2023 21:59

I also think you're being paranoid.

Seems like such a reach.

I had an ad for geriatric chairs the other day and I'm in my 20s.

This is feeding into her paranoia.
