Boxing as a parent

AIBU to think that a boxing career when you have a child is completely and utterly selfish?

I will say I am not a fan of Molly Mae and Tommy Fury. But I did feel sorry for her after seeing clips of her with a newborn while he went to the gym to train etc all before she could even shower in the morning. I watched the boxing the other night and did just think one wrong punch and it all goes down the drain. Look at what happened to Prichard Colon when he was only about 22/23. It’s sad that it could happen to any of them but if you have a child surely it’s even more imperative that you keep yourself safe for the sake of being able to care for your child?

Of course many other extreme sports have high risks but repeated blows to the head, with more force than as a women, I’ll admit, I could even imagine surely isn’t worth the glory of a belt when you have a child?

A lot of manual jobs involve risk and death isn't out of the question. Are they all selfish for going to work as well or is it only selfish when you don't benefit from their job or like what the job is?

Aitrop · 16/10/2023 15:00

Do you feel the same about police or fire officers with children? Or people in the armed forces? Or the whole variety of other jobs that carry a risk of serious injury or death?

Vand · 16/10/2023 15:14

No I dont feel the same about those jobs. Because even though the risk is there, it isn’t happening every single time. I did say that In my OP.

Training for boxing involves sparring. Meaning they are being hit in the head every single time. It’s not an if.

Well presumably no one forced her to have a baby with a boxer. It's not a surprise that he has to train frequently and could end up deaf/blind/brain damaged.

I think it's a horrible "sport" and wouldn't want to be married to a boxer, so I'm not.

Oh I absolutely agree with you. She definitely brought it upon herself but I still did feel some compassion for her especially as a FTM.

My ex actually took up boxing once and our relationship didn’t last much longer after that

Molly has stated she hates Tommy fighting.
But do you feel the same about Tyson ? He's got another newborn now, I'm sure Paris isn't a fan but they've got a great life from it

wildwestpioneer · 16/10/2023 16:03

I think you could say that about a lot of things army, police, fire and also hobbies likes rugby, Horse Riding, motorcycle riding etc.

I thought it was pretty clear from my OP I was talking about all boxers in general. I mentioned Tommy fury because I’ve just seen his fight 2 nights ago.

As for having a great life, I’m sure any boxers family who has been left paralysed or vegetative would trade all the glory and money from their careers to have them healthy again.

My husband is a kickboxer, as is one of my sons. We are due another baby in January.

Yes, there's risks to it, but like most people said, there's risks to everything. You can't live your life based off of "what ifs". Tomorrow is never promised, so enjoy your life while your here.

They both enjoy it and are good at it. Yes, they get hit. Yes, they come home injured. But that's just part of it. They do it for the trophies and medals they win. My son plans to compete for England one day.

crankit · 16/10/2023 16:44

Well yes of course the ones who have been injured may think differently but as others have said, there are risks in alot of jobs. They do it because it's their passion given a dangerous one

Strokethefurrywall · 16/10/2023 16:54

I mean... it's a bit of a random sport to pick on. Rugby players suffer and are at great risk of injuries, American football has a 100% injury rate, firefighters risk death every time they go out to a call etc etc.

During training, boxers spar with headgear to cushion the blows, they work on defense, they work on speed drills. They're not getting punched in the head every day, only in a live fight. And even then, amateurs and semi-pros may retain headgear until they're comfortable going without.

In addition to what everyone else has commented, Tommy Fury isn't fighting actual boxers, he's fighting YT "personalities." There is zero risk of him, as a trained (albeit crap) boxer, getting hurt by the the clowns he fought this year. He's just making a lot of very easy money.

allhellcantstopusnow · 16/10/2023 21:20

If you don't want the father of your children to be a boxer, don't marry a boxer.

If you don't want the father of your children to be a rugby player, don't marry a rugby player.

If you don't want the father of your children to be an armed response police officer, don't marry an armed response police officer.

It's not overly difficult.

Personally, I would marry a boxer. I wouldn't marry a Tory. Horses for courses.

Also a good point. That KSI fight was absurd. He's more at risk catching a bus.
