Heating Settings at Night

During Autumn/Winter, I have mine set to come on during the night if it drops below 14 in the house, that way, when it's set to reach 18 at 5am onwards it doesn't use to much energy to reach that temp. That's my thought process anyway!

Eg if the house dropped to 10 overnight, it would have to use quite a bit of energy to bump it up to 18 in the morning so that the house is warm when we get up.

What temp to you have yours set to?

Overnight mine is set to 12 if it goes too cold it sets my asthma off. Then it's 19 in the morning.not set it up fully this year yet.

WhateverMate · 16/10/2023 11:53

We have ours off at night even if it snows. We just don't need it with warm duvets and pyjamas.

It only takes about 10 or 15 minutes to warm up the house in the mornings (even though it's fairly large and open plan) and we're usually rushing about when we get up anyway.

Muddle2000 · 16/10/2023 11:53

It uses energy whenever it has to be put on to increase the existing temperature you may save a bit

Costalife · 16/10/2023 11:55

Off. It's not necessary at night time imo

Muddle2000 · 16/10/2023 11:56

We do not have ours on at night unless,it gets,to freezing or 1 or 2,degrees above freezing Then c 15 degrees an hour before we get up but sometimes we do not bother

DontBeAPrickDarren · 16/10/2023 11:57

Off unless it’s properly freezing

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 16/10/2023 11:57

I have mine set at 12.5c overnight - just simply as a safety net. However, I would be very suprised if the house dropped to that temperature. It's well insulated and the lowest it ever gets is about 15c overnight.

So, in reality, it is off overnight and comes on early morning.

megletthesecond · 16/10/2023 11:58

18° at night. I need the heat when I'm not moving.

SlipperyLizard · 16/10/2023 11:58

Ours is off at night, always, that’s what duvets are for!

TokyoSushi · 16/10/2023 11:59

Ours is on 7 at night, which I think is the default and basically 'off'

Insommmmnia · 16/10/2023 12:00

Mines on 14 overnight for my asthma and trigeminal neuralgia but I think it only comes on in very cold snaps anyway now we've sorted out the insulation and double glazing

Snowpaw · 16/10/2023 12:09

Always off at night. First thing in the morning I always open all the windows and the front door to air the house through as well for 10 minutes or so, then close them all before putting heating on. I'm a big believer in houses needing to breathe - I hate stuffy air.

RaraRachael · 16/10/2023 12:09

We never have heating on at night, regardless of how cold it gets. As a PP said, we just wrap up warmly.
I can't bear waking up to heating on as it always means I wake up with a headache so find it hard staying with people who have theirs on overnight or first thing in the morning,

cartagenagina · 16/10/2023 12:12

Off at night unless it’s below zero

dementedpixie · 16/10/2023 12:12

Off at night and then on a thermostat and timer during the day

WinterVibes · 16/10/2023 12:19

I'm clearly not getting this right 😂 I'm going to drop it down to 10 at night, so shouldn't come on really as we are well insulated.

Fightyouforthatpie · 16/10/2023 12:23

Ours is set at 15 overnight, but it never dips that low.

Desecratedcoconut · 16/10/2023 12:29

We have it set at 16c, but it's been dropping to two degrees here and there overnight and it hasn't kicked in at any point yet. My hive suggests it's been bottoming out at 17.8c.

But I do think those days when it's Baltic over winter then a warmer overnight temperature means that you don't spend all day with the heating on while it fights to get to a reasonable temperature and you still spend the day feeling cold.

CacenCaws · 16/10/2023 12:30

Off at night whatever the weather. Extra blankets & warm PJ's needed sometimes

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/10/2023 12:33

Heating off at night unless it is predicted to get very cold (well below zero) and then I set it at 12 degrees as a safeguard against pipes freezing.

muddyford · 16/10/2023 12:41

Off at night on frost setting, so it comes on if the indoor temperature drops to 0C.

AmyJohnsonsplane · 16/10/2023 12:45

It's just off. Can bear it on at night

Plexie · 16/10/2023 12:49

Set to 13.5 degrees overnight but it would be rare for the temperate to drop that low so in reality it doesn't kick in overnight.

It's not just the cost of heating your home from a low temperature to an acceptable temperature - it's the length of time too. In very cold weather I think it takes 30 minutes for our house to heat up by 1 degree. So if the overnight temperate is 16 degrees, it could take 2 hours to get it up to 20 degrees.

cariadlet · 16/10/2023 12:50

Always off at night. Even if the bed is cold when you first get in, the duvet traps body heat and it doesn't take long to warm up.
Socks and a hot water bottle if it's really freezing.

helpfulperson · 16/10/2023 12:54

Frost protection setting which is 7 degrees.
