Heating Settings at Night

WinterVibes · 16/10/2023 11:45

During Autumn/Winter, I have mine set to come on during the night if it drops below 14 in the house, that way, when it's set to reach 18 at 5am onwards it doesn't use to much energy to reach that temp. That's my thought process anyway!

Eg if the house dropped to 10 overnight, it would have to use quite a bit of energy to bump it up to 18 in the morning so that the house is warm when we get up.

What temp to you have yours set to?

It’s set to 18 and comes on if it drops lower than that. The sensor is in DD’s room, and that’s all we’re concerned about, as she tends to kick off her covers during the night. If we didn’t have DD, I wouldn’t have it come on at all. It rarely drops below 18 - we’re mid terrace and the house seems to retain heat quite well.

Set to 13.5 degrees overnight but it would be rare for the temperate to drop that low so in reality it doesn't kick in overnight.

It's not just the cost of heating your home from a low temperature to an acceptable temperature - it's the length of time too. In very cold weather I think it takes 30 minutes for our house to heat up by 1 degree. So if the overnight temperate is 16 degrees, it could take 2 hours to get it up to 20 degrees.

Yeah, the crazy cold, pipe-bursting, weather last December really illustrated the Herculean effort the central heating has to put in just to maintain a reasonable temperature on those days, let alone having to increase it.

SoupDragon · 16/10/2023 12:54

Mine only comes on at night if the house drops below 14. My house is quit cold and I don't think it's ever actually come on at night (I sleep over the boiler and usually wake up if it comes on)

my heating is never really "off" as the controller just has bands where you set the temperature - you set it low enough so that it doesn't come on rather than switch it "off".

18° at night. I need the heat when I'm not moving.

Mine too.
I've tried setting it lower but it's just painful for me (even with a warm duvet)

User1786 · 16/10/2023 12:57

Downstairs heating is set to off at night and upstairs set to 16C. I don’t think it’s ever come on though

DitheringBlidiot · 16/10/2023 12:57

I never have the heating on overnight but everyone is different and houses hole on to the heat differently.

I do also sleep with a window open, regardless of the weather though.

We have the heating timed to come on at 5-6am and then again at 6-7pm but I'll put it on again in the evening if we are cold and have already put an extra layer on and some socks etc.

ReignOfError · 16/10/2023 13:02

It’s off overnight, and the radiator in my bedroom is never on.

sellote · 16/10/2023 13:03

We have it off at night.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 16/10/2023 13:13

Off at night.
Usually on a timer - 0530 - 0800, 1400-1600 and 2000-2100. But we boost it for an hour if needed at other times.

Currently off, but manually boosting for an hour the last 2 days.

WeWereInParis · 16/10/2023 13:22

I'm not sure your logic is right when it comes to conserving energy.
We have ours set to 15 at night, but even in the middle of winter it rarely comes on because it rarely gets below that.

CissOff · 16/10/2023 13:25

15 overnight and then 18 during the day. We aren’t a cold family so it suits us. Will do a manual boost if it does feel cool.

We have UFH in our extension and will turn that on when it’s much colder. It’s expensive to run if the ambient temp is too cold though. It cost £20 to heat for 3 days over a long weekend away when we’d turned off the main CH but forgotten the UFH. The CH was on ‘frost prevention’ mode so didn’t kick in until it was 12c…UFH was set to 18c so worked like crazy to keep the temps up 🙈😢

skippy67 · 16/10/2023 13:29

We don't have our heating on at night. Ever. Windows open a crack too all year round too.

HaddawayAndShite · 16/10/2023 13:30

I think it probably defends on the home as a PP said. It takes far too long for our house to warm
up, so having the heating “on” all the time in cold weather but in reality it only flicks on every now and again, gets the house up a degree then goes off after 30 mins or so. It would take hours to get the house from 14 to 18.

UndertheCedartree · 16/10/2023 13:31

I don't have the heating on at night atall. And barely ever in the day either due to utility costs. I put it on sometimes if the washing needs help drying when it's very cold. We have a little fan heater we use to warm up if really cold.

Airdustmoon · 16/10/2023 13:34

Ours is set to 16 overnight and rarely clicks on.

JadeSeahorse · 16/10/2023 13:42

13 overnight as we are both retired and well remember the days as children, before ch, when you woke up to frozen windows inside and having to get dressed by the gas cooker 😂 (Plus we need the en-suite quite a bit during the night these days.)

Daytime at present it is only set at 15 but our house is detached yet very well insulated plus our front large bay window is south facing so keeps our sitting room and hallway pretty warm. After 6.00pm we normally drop the ch to 13 as we like to have the gas fire on low which seems to keep the house really warm and cosy.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 16/10/2023 13:42

14-15 overnight.

Natsku · 16/10/2023 13:53

Mine stays on at the same temperature day and night. I live in a cold country, you can't put the heating off at night or you risk damage to the house as well as being really really cold. But even this time of year, when its not going below zero, I wouldn't let the temperature drop at night, its horrible getting up in a cold house.

Nochoiceleft · 16/10/2023 13:56

Ours has frost protection set at 9°. It’s never come on overnight that I am aware of.

MammaTo · 16/10/2023 13:57

I have mine set to come on between 2am-3am in the winter to take the chill off the babies room because his room seems to get really cold.

Ryeman · 16/10/2023 14:02

You're thinking about using more energy to warm up the house is wrong I think. Ours is completely off at night, I can't stand it too warm.

Dutch1e · 16/10/2023 14:06

Ours is set to come on if it drops below 15° but that only happens 2 or 3 nights a year. We live in a row house so the neighbours on either side must insulate us pretty well.

Diamondcurtains · 16/10/2023 14:07

We don’t have a thermostat so the heating in the winter just comes on on a timer. If I’m cold during the day I just over ride the timer. Heating is never on at night.

PinkRoses1245 · 16/10/2023 14:08

Always off at night. it's healthier and better for you to sleep in a cool room, but be warm under the duvet.

I keep seeing this. By what mechanism is this healthier and is there a great decline in health over summer?
