War is just so...stupid.

I'd love to say I'm being light-hearted, but I'm not really.

Isn't war just about the stupidest thing? I just don't get why leaders have to be so ridiculous. Don't they realise that if they stopped fighting they could have nice things?

Things like...maybe a Selfridges, a farmer's market, tapas restaurants, art exhibitions, and picnics.

Religious zealots aren't born zealots, and dictators are born dictators, what the fuck went wrong with those guys (always guys) to make them think they ruining everyone else's days/lives was more important than just rubbing along nicely together and having a decent time?

War/fighting is for those who lack the intelligence to solve their problems using their brain.

It starts with toddlers who understandably cannot always express their emotion so hit out in frustration. Eventually most learn that words will get them what they want, not violence.

The solution is education and giving people the skills to negotiate so we can live in a world of peace.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to education, which can lead to brainwashing and people fighting for what they think is right because that's what they've been told.

I don't get your link to "nice" things! Surely everyone would just like peace?

Unfortunately we learn that stronger bullies win, not words, in school and out of school.

If only it was the reverse.

However we are all enabling this situation as we are not speaking out or protesting.
I am so sick of these wars.

The men who start it have their own agenda. They are sick and need to be put in hospital or prison.

When are we going to learn that more love is needed not hate. Surely this is the next level of intelligence.

CampsieGlamper · 16/10/2023 13:11

Galtiari, the right wing fascist dictator of Argentina started the Falklands war by invading territories who had declared they wished to be part of Britain.

JamSandle · 16/10/2023 13:12

It's so disheartening that war is as prevalent as it's ever been and will likely never go away. It shows humans never learn.

CampsieGlamper · 16/10/2023 13:14

I don't think we would have got nice things if we had capitulated in Ww2

TheaBrandt · 16/10/2023 13:03

If countries were led by a committee of 12 normal women in their 50s I bet there would be no war.

I hate this sort of trite, twee shite. Doesn’t do anyone any favours and is total rubbish.

therealcookiemonster · 16/10/2023 13:17

@Caketothemilk the thing is if you take young soldiers and brainwash them into thinking the otherside are subhuman, they will commit atrocities. all the information was withheld from Pakistani people - I do not blame them and there is no point carrying that anger into my generation although many do. even to this day I meet Pakistani people who try to convince me that it was India that was at fault and they were trying to protect us?!

@RainbowRuby surprised that you say that. genuinely the first Pakistani person I have come across who knows about what actually happened and 90% of my friends are Pakistani. its nice to know that there is more awareness.

SecretAgent00777 · 16/10/2023 13:18

Surely a lot of wars like the current Israeli/Palestine war and the war/troubles in Northern Ireland are caused because one group has power, dominance and control over another group and treat them like shit.

Eventually those being treated like shit will lash out in a violent manner because the dominant group have ignored their pleas for equality and fairness.

CampsieGlamper · 16/10/2023 13:20

I wonder if there is a Mumsnet Gaza version where instead of saying "see, this is what happens when you vote for Brexit, told you so, eh, eh, eh? " they are replacing "Brexit" with Hamas.

eveoha · 16/10/2023 13:24

No far from it - wars are not not ‘stupid’ to those who profit from them - and not just in financial terms 😐👍🏿☘️

Maybe it’s a generational thing? My parents were young adults in the 70s and I was a teenager when Musharraf published the Mujeebur Rahman Commission report in the newspapers- which essentially disclosed the war crimes. So it was very much discussed and acknowledged at that time around me (2000). Not sure what the school curriculum was spewing to be honest as my education was in various countries over my childhood. Not that ‘knowing about’ it excuses us for the atrocities- but we/our leaders have a lot to be ashamed of.

Caketothemilk · 16/10/2023 13:26

This genocide is funded by American tax payers' dollars correct me if I'm wrong.

TheVeryVeryHangryCaterpillar · 16/10/2023 13:29

Sorry OP, but a bit of a silly and simplistic statement.

People fights wars if they believe passionately in something. If they are oppressed, they fight for their rights. If they have been oppressed for many years and across multiple generations then feelings of anger and hatred will run deep.

frustratedinlaw · 16/10/2023 13:31

@Caketothemilk careful with statements like that, they err exceptionally close to “Jewish conspiracy” ideology, and we all know who else pushed that.

SilverCatStripes · 16/10/2023 13:34

This analogy doesn’t work though because the other side aren’t calling for ‘equality and fairness’ they are calling the annihilation of the dominant group.

Hamas are no different to Daesh , they would see every single non Sunni Muslim wiped from the Earth and consider that equality and fairness - so how do you propose a peaceful co existence with people who wish you dead?

therealcookiemonster · 16/10/2023 13:38

@RainbowRuby you are probably right... the people I know had parents who immigrated in the 60s/70s from rural areas so they probably haven't engaged with these more recent discussions. my friend's dad actually sat me down and told me everything I know is wrong because 'he knew people in the army'. he is the sweetest, loveliest man so I just smiled and nodded.

tbh each nation has its dark secrets. its not like the various 'leaders' of Pakistan have treated their own people very well!

daytriptovulcan · 16/10/2023 13:47

We live in the age of stupidity, and the older folks who connected us to the horror of WW2 are fewer and fewer.
Ultimately they 'll just have to find a way to live together (you know who you are). May as well start now or soon, rather than wait another 70 years

DistrictAndCircle · 16/10/2023 13:50

“Let’s not have wars” is fine. Until someone invades your country. And then what? You either let them have it, or you fight back and there is a war.

The problem isn’t war, it’s aggression.

AmazingSnakeHead · 16/10/2023 13:51

Are you fucking kidding me? Have you seen a single photo of Gaza from before the bombing? They are very far away from having "nice things" like Selfridges, a farmer's market, tapas restaurants. What the fuck even is that list? I guess you're trying to be funny, but implying that people who are currently having bombs dropped on them would be fine if they just had a farmer's market to go to is insensitive at best. The people there want clean water, enough food and a safe homeland. The people of Israel also want a safe homeland.

And for the people of Israel, the participation of some countries in at least one war saved the lives of the entire country, and of every Jewish person who lives outside of Israel too. What should Israel (or Palestine for that matter) do in response to attacks, just bury their dead and go and eat some tapas?

Also look at America. They wage lots of wars, and have lots of nice things.

koalaknickers · 16/10/2023 13:51

If countries were led by a committee of 12 normal women in their 50s I bet there would be no war.

Not in my family, I'm sorry to say!

TheaBrandt · 16/10/2023 13:53

I think it’s true though. The wrong people end up being the ones power. Putin? Hitler ? Stalin? Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy had it right the best person to be in power is the one that really doesn’t want to be.

AmazingSnakeHead · 16/10/2023 13:54

Also the person saying that women over 50 would never wage war clearly do not recall that Thatcher was prime minister during the Troubles.

Out of interest, has a female leader ever started a war?

There haven't been that many female leaders in the world over the centuries have there?

Of those that there have been some didn't shy away from war, whether they 'officially' started it or not - Elizabeth I, Queen Anne, Isabella of Castille (led armies against the Muslims in Spain to drive them out , did so successfully and was described as the very epitome of a war leader), Margaret Thatcher (The Falklands War) to name a few off the top of my head.
