War is just so...stupid.

I'd love to say I'm being light-hearted, but I'm not really.

Isn't war just about the stupidest thing? I just don't get why leaders have to be so ridiculous. Don't they realise that if they stopped fighting they could have nice things?

Things like...maybe a Selfridges, a farmer's market, tapas restaurants, art exhibitions, and picnics.

Religious zealots aren't born zealots, and dictators are born dictators, what the fuck went wrong with those guys (always guys) to make them think they ruining everyone else's days/lives was more important than just rubbing along nicely together and having a decent time?

Men flexing their muscles and women and children suffer.

Female heads of state declare war as well. Some studies suggest queens were historically more likely to declare war than kings.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 16/10/2023 10:34

I agree, lots of penis swinging and flexing going on whilst the vulnerable become collateral damage.

Is that what Britain was doing in WW2? Penis-flexing?

There was Indira Ghandi who started the war with Pakistan to create Bangladesh.

oh my God, where did you learn this level of misinformation?

people in Bangladesh were happy to be 'east pakistan' initially due to idealistic hopes of 'all Muslims together'. however these hopes were soon shattered due to systematic oppression and exploitation including urdu being the national language to be used in all institutions. the language movement started in 1952, unarmed student protesters who were campaigning for bangla to be the language in 'East pakistan' were shot by the pakistani army on 21st February 1952. there followed brutal repression. finally at the election around 1970, the Bangladeshi politician sheikh mujibur rahman won a landslide victory (as population in East pakistan/Bangladesh was much higher) but was denied his seat. the Pakistani generals came to Bangladesh in April 1971 ostensibly for peace talks but secretly brought the army. they killed 300,000 bengali civilians in one night of genocide across the nation. there was another night where they rounded up all the authors/University professors/journalists/politicians and massacred them. this is when war started. India did play a huge role by giving military aid but they did NOT start the war.

I am Bangladeshi, many members of my family were involved in the conflict, some were killed in cold blood. my late grandfather spent many years in prison during his university days - first for protesting against the British and then for being one of the instigators of the language movement in 1952.

Overpopulation doesn’t help. Overpopulation never helps.

Insomniacoffee · 16/10/2023 11:13

You’re assuming everyone wants the same nice things . Unfortunately what some consider ‘nice’ is what we consider barbaric and oppressive

Kendodd · 16/10/2023 11:23

I read once that we have more violence (including wars) when we have a disproportionately large number of young men in a society.

user1478172746 · 16/10/2023 11:25

It's not instinct. We are herd/band animals, our instinct is cooperation. All the exploitation and wars of a large scale started when we abandoned our instincts and nature for agricultural lifestyle, for hierarchy, for male dominance, for states and empires to form. Hunter gatherers where/are more egalitarian than not.

How do you know?

User893432374902zzx · 16/10/2023 11:32

How about Margaret Thatcher?

Kendodd · 16/10/2023 11:41

I also think it's completely stupid to want to opt out of international courts (ECJ etc). How else do you settle disputes between countries? Traditionally we went to war, then some bright spark came up with the idea, why not have international courts that countries can bring cases to to adjudication instead?

TeenLifeMum · 15/10/2023 23:36

Out of interest, has a female leader ever started a war?

Elizabeth the First started quite a few.
Margaret Thatcher for someone more recent.
You could argue that if Liz Truss had stayed for much longer she'd have started a civil war 🤣.

Totally pointless in the scheme of things and their life would be much more enjoyable without it, even those creating it. The most ridiculous thing to me is that it’s often about religion despite most faiths speaking about kindness and love. How faith can be turned into hatred in the name of God is beyond me but it’s not just one of the faiths that do this. I was in a Church of England church in the last 3 years having the vicar who was early 30s speak about how homosexuality is a sin. I’ve not gone back since. Total hatespeak from a guy educated in religious studies at Oxford university.

It's not usually religion that causes it, but religion is used/abused by those who want the power, often for monetary gain, i.e. wars fought in the name of religion but for land and resources, such as precious metals/minerals, oil, etc. If you look at most wars, underneath the religion, there's usually land/resource grabs involved. The power crazed leaders use religion to mobilise and enthuse their people. It's easier to get the population on board by talking religion and making the war about religion than encouraging them to fight to get possession of metals/minerals/oils/gas, etc.

The Argies started the Falklands War, not Thatcher!

Well they would. Go back a few hundred years and Kings were genuinely part of their armies and would fight alongside their soldiers, if not lead their armies. The Women heads of state would declare war and let their generals go off to war and get killed, whilst they stayed and "supervised" often from a great distance where they were pretty safe from danger.

Kendodd · 16/10/2023 12:20

They're almost always (or just always) about money. Religion is sometimes used as some sort of flag or cause to rally behind but scape that away, and it's money underneath.

I remember hearing a war reporter saying this much sited saying about learning your history was wrong. What people needed to do was actually forget their history. This came to him reporting on the Balken wars, a man in the street handed him a piece of paper with 1390 (or some '13' date) written on it. The people were still pissed off and wanting revenge for a battle that had happened 700 years ago.

ReverseFerret · 16/10/2023 12:23

Yes
Based mostly on religion which has a lot to answer for and which IMHO is equally stupid

madroid · 15/10/2023 23:52

There should be a law that if you want to start a war you have to go and fight in it personally. You can't send some poor ignorant simpleton to go and do it for you.

And people should just refuse to fight in armies.

Totally agree with this

I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm a Pakistani born and bred and never did I ever learn of this in school or anywhere else. This is the first time. I'm horrified. I'm so sorry 💔

Not for years, I mean there was Boudica 2000 years ago but I can't think of anyone since.

And yes, young men also suffer. All those dead young men. And for what? To make Putin and Hamas leaders richer.

Boudicca was supposed to inherit her father's kingdom. Instead it was annexed, she was badly beaten and her daughters were raped. I don't think it's fair to accuse her of starting the troubles

RainbowRuby · 16/10/2023 12:59

@therealcookiemonster Cruel facts. I am Pakistani and you have summarised the heart breaking events as we in Pakistan know them too. 💔 politics, ego and narcissism- ruining generations

TheaBrandt · 16/10/2023 13:03

If countries were led by a committee of 12 normal women in their 50s I bet there would be no war.

TheaBrandt · 16/10/2023 13:04

To be fair to Boudicca I think she was defending her land she didn’t start it.
