I had an endoscopy last year and had sedation. Half way through, I started freaking out and gagging. Was horrific! I have another one next week and am panicking already as it was so bad last time.
has anyone got any tips to stop the gagging and panicking? X

Did they give you sufficient sedation?

They’re the worst. I’ve had more of them than I can count and they don’t seem to get easier. Sounds simple but the best thing I can do for it is breathing exercises. I also keep my earphones in and either listen to music, an audiobook, or (if I’m feeling really anxious about it) a guided meditation. I also keep my eyes closed because seeing my insides on a screen is just too much for me!

Sorry - to be clear, I’m talking about colonoscopies- up the bumhole.

I’m going to query this this time as I’ve been sedated for colonoscopies and it works a treat so don’t know what happened!

Weirdly I’m fine with these. I couldn’t stop gagging on my last endoscopy!

I have had a couple with sedation. There’s nothing you can do to stop the gag reflux if you are sensitive. I just accept it’s going to happen for the 5 minutes or so. I try to relax as that helps but know I am going to gag.

I wouldn't have one without a general anaesthetic. It's barbaric for doctors to do them without one.

I had one a few weeks ago, was absolutely fine and I was out of it. Just explain to the dr that you're not sensitive to sedation and they may up your dose to be sure.

Thank you everyone. I am dreading it 🥺
Will try some of your tips x
