Catering for a vegetarian?!

Magenta3 · 14/10/2023 13:01

My brother's gf is a vegetarian. We're having everyone over next weekend for a get together. My family eats a lot of meat and I feel a bit unsure of what to cook her, and if I'm being honest I don't see why we should change our catering for one person.

I asked my brother to bring along some of their own food for her (he eats meat so will be fine, it's literally only for her) and he seemed annoyed at me. He obliged but I could tell he wasn't happy. When we've been to theirs she doesn't cook meat for us so it feels one sided. She jokes she'd probably poison us as she doesn't know how to cook meat but realistically she doesn't want to cook it, so why should we for her?

Don't change your catering to suit her.. but then don't invite her. How would you like being a guest where there was nothing for you too eat?

Mummaoftwo2016 · 17/10/2023 19:52

Talk about a way to make them feel not welcome! Its not exactly difficult to make something veggie. Sounds like you dont like her and intend to make it difficult. If you were my relative and i was in their shoes i wouldnt bother going. Its not like she is just being fussy.

WhamBamThankU · 17/10/2023 19:52

Vegetarians don't eat fish, and Asda value 'Italian hard cheese' (parmesan) is vegetarian. That's all I can offer this thread cos I despair

gemma19846 · 17/10/2023 19:57

Im vegetarian and if this was me i wouldnt go. More so because you obviously cant be bothered to include her in your plans. Why would you invite someone round to eat then not provide food they can eat. Its really NOT hard

Uklady23 · 17/10/2023 19:58

I'm a vegetarian and always bring along my own food just incase the host hadn't catered for me.

However I do think it is unreasonable from you as you are aware of her being a vegetarian your choosing not to cater for one of your guests. There are plenty of vegetarian options also which means whatever your having you can likely make the same with a alternative to meat.

moogdroog · 17/10/2023 20:08

Are you from the 1970's? As a lifelong vegetarian, my dietary requirements were often met with bafflement or bemusement, but never this level of rudeness. Jeez, could you not have just popped to M&S or something?

glossypeach · 17/10/2023 20:08

I’m vegan and my family are the biggest meat eaters. When I go there for dinner they always cater for me and go above and beyond to do so. The same with me, I obviously don’t eat meat nor dairy but when I have people for dinner I cater to their dietary needs and provide what they eat - even if I don’t. You’re being massively unreasonable.

Maybe87 · 17/10/2023 20:12

I wouldn’t cook something differently to be honest. She can eat the sides and the salad options. I assume you won’t cook just meat as you need something to accompany it

Tokek · 17/10/2023 20:15

"When we're at theirs, she doesn't cook meat for us."

She.

She.

It doesn't surprise me with that attitude that you also have 1970s attitudes about food. I wonder if this post is just made up for shock value.

G5000 · 17/10/2023 20:18

The people who think OP is not U, do you treat other preferences the same? 'Yeah I know you don't eat fish/eggplant, but I specifically chose to cook salmon/aubergnie parmigiana anyway. You can eat bread'?

trainboundfornowhere · 17/10/2023 20:48

OP I am intolerant to tomatoes, bell peppers and strawberries. The stomach cramps, rash and vomiting are great fun. Not. If I came for dinner would you feed me these because it is easier than looking for alternatives? Your brothers GF is vegetarian and that is far easier to cater for than my dietary issues. You are definitely being unreasonable.

Whyohwhywyoming · 17/10/2023 21:17

My favourite thing about this whole thread is the fact that the meal OP is planning to serve is curry, cuisine which offers some of the tastiest, varied, vegetarian options going.

MyMiniMetro · 17/10/2023 21:24

If you have no inkling why you are being an arsehole, there's honestly no hope for you.

Karubyvw · 17/10/2023 23:05

If I was the girlfriend I would not feel welcome at all and would not want to come. You're being very rude and making her feel like an inconvenience and that you don't want her there. Might wanna have a think about why you behaving like this and what is making you feel so resentful to someone you should be welcoming and getting to know (even if only for the sake of your brother).

Bunnylove19 · 17/10/2023 23:47

Wow. You are so unkind. It must have been more effort to create this post than pick her up a pack of veggie sausages. Aren’t family gatherings about actually being together rather than the specific foods (meat). I hope they don’t come.

You’d happily serve a guest plain rice and salad? Would you kick them up the crotch on the way out too?

Sheet of puff pastry rolled out and scored around the edge about 1” in. Brush with egg white and bake at 180 for a couple of mins. Spread pastry with red pesto. Cover with thinly sliced peppers, red onion, spinach. Sprinkle with vegan cheese and bake until cooked. Serve with a big green sals. Quick simple and delicious

That sounds yummy! I always forgot about using puff pastry to make meals. Might be because I always use it more for the colder months.

Fairhsa · 18/10/2023 06:24

You are making curry. Do you not see the irony? You are taking a dish from a population which has possibly more vegetarian options for thouands of years due to Hindus not wanting to kill animals...and saying it's hard. 😂😂😂

Why use vegan cheese if youve used egg?!

Justkidding678 · 18/10/2023 06:31

OP you are being unfriendly and unreasonable.

KirstinBlest · 18/10/2023 06:38

@ConnieTucker , some vegetarians don't eat dairy but do eat eggs, either because of religious reasons or lactose-intolerance

TheaBrandt · 18/10/2023 06:38

Are you my father in law?! Most of India is vegetarian 🙄. When I went there was a long menu then a small “non vegetarian” selection which was always best avoided.

Dd has been vegetarian for a year now we just eat meat at weekends. Google bbc good food vegetarian curry there are lots of recipes I make about twice a week. It’s not environmentally friendly to eat lots of meat anyway.

Maybe87 · 18/10/2023 08:21

That’s exactly what vegetarians eat and expect! Salad. Vegetables. And carbs.
