To not want to feed the kids takeaway

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:06

Visiting family, plan was for pub meal out for a celebration. Due to a happy arrival of a baby pub meal cancelation.

However back up plan is a Chinese takeaway. I have preschoolers ! Basically I'm going to be stuck cooking for kids in an unfamiliar kitchen whilst everyone else tucks into their takeaway. Then eat mine cold so as not to look u grateful where as it i'd rather have hot scrambled egg on toast as im cooking it anyway. Ffs.

You are being a bit precious - Chinese takeaway is fine for a treat.

Alternatively feed the children a little earlier when the take away is being collected?

healthadvice123 · 13/10/2023 22:09

Why can’t the kids have some take away? Of why not cook for them befoee the take away arrives , or precook something which can be heated if can keep if cool whilst travelling. Loads of options

mynameiscalypso · 13/10/2023 22:10

Why can't you just get takeaway for them? Plain rice and some stir fry chicken/veggies?

healthadvice123 · 13/10/2023 22:10

Making something difficult which really doesn’t need to be

Inastatus · 13/10/2023 22:11

What’s wrong with a Chinese takeaway for your kids? What would they have eaten in the pub that would have been so much better?

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 13/10/2023 22:11

My kids would have tried a bit of Chinese at that age, just make sure the takeaway arrives at a time that suits you and get help doing bath and bed after?!
Food wise, if no allergies prawn toast is good, obvs all the carbs, chips, rice, noodles, prawn crackers and then let them have a little try of the mains!

YourNameGoesHere · 13/10/2023 22:12

To be honest if you don't want to give them takeaway what's wrong with them just having something that requires no cooking like sandwiches or picky bits. Why do you have to cook, it sounds like you're looking for a way to be a martyr.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 13/10/2023 22:12

All them poor helpless Chinese children living, breathing and excelling by eating rice and vegetables all their lives. Definitely make life harder for yourself making them something different instead.

colouroftherainbow · 13/10/2023 22:12

Agree you’re being a bit precious about this. Prepare their meal in advance so you just need to heat and serve them (or in my case, I would feed them before the adults eat too).
Alternatively, just order something simple they would eat from the take away like egg fried rice

Decemberstartsonsunday · 13/10/2023 22:12

It takes a few minutes to do scrambled egg on toast, your food wouldn't be freezing by then.

NuffSaidSam · 13/10/2023 22:12

Takeaway is fine. If they won't eat Chinese order something else for them, but they very often do a small selection of 'English food' for kids/fussy people.

Or cook the kids scrambled eggs earlier! Surely you're not all eating at the same time as pre-schoolers anyway?

hopeishere · 13/10/2023 22:13

Get them chips from the Chinese. Or noodles. Or rice and veggies. You're making it a problem.

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:13

Guess they might like it but they've not had it before. By the early evening they'll be really hungry/ grumpy and usually I'm bed by time it will arrive

Tbf I don't think the kids in China eat the sort of food you'd get from a British Chinese takeaway. Just like our kids don't live on fish and chips.

catbla2957 · 13/10/2023 22:14

My kids wouldn't even at it but I would just feed them half an hour before it arrives. Not sure why it's an issue

takealettermsjones · 13/10/2023 22:14

I think there's a bit of unnecessary drama in "stuck cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen" when it's scrambled egg on toast - it's a few minutes with a toaster and a pan!

But my preschooler absolutely loves chow mein. I suppose it's not great health wise but it's only once in a blue moon!

NuffSaidSam · 13/10/2023 22:14

So feed them earlier and solve the problem of your food being cold! Good grief.

Eh, to be fair the typical British Chinese takeaway is not like authentic Chinese food, it's its own thing.

Won't hurt for them to try it as a treat OP

gelatogina · 13/10/2023 22:15

Seriously how long does it take to make a bit of scrambled egg and toast in and ‘unfamiliar kitchen’. You aren’t making a Michelin star tasting menu.

you are being awkward.

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/10/2023 22:16

just give them the prawn crackers, sorted!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/10/2023 22:16

Yeah feed them earlier, so them you’re not cooking when the food arrives. Then kids can have a bit of the Chinese if they like with you all, but it’s not an issue if they don’t want it as they’ll have had their scrambled eggs.

ChristmasCrumpet · 13/10/2023 22:16

If they would usually be in bed before the takeaway even arrives, what is the problem? You make their (5 minute) scrambled eggs dinner, they go to bed, you eat your food.

You sound hard work.

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:17

I can't win anyway. If I volunteer to cook them something simple earlier then I look like a martyr or precious . If I wait until food arrives and they don't like it then mine will get cold!

You’re being a drama llama.

Rice, noodles, stir fried veg/meat is fine for preschoolers 🙄🙄

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 13/10/2023 22:17

Chinese restaurants always have chips. Rice, chicken or prawn balls, chow mein, some sort of veg dish, spring rolls, foo yung is an omelette dish...

I'd be surprised if they couldn't eat something.
