To not want to feed the kids takeaway

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:06

Visiting family, plan was for pub meal out for a celebration. Due to a happy arrival of a baby pub meal cancelation.

However back up plan is a Chinese takeaway. I have preschoolers ! Basically I'm going to be stuck cooking for kids in an unfamiliar kitchen whilst everyone else tucks into their takeaway. Then eat mine cold so as not to look u grateful where as it i'd rather have hot scrambled egg on toast as im cooking it anyway. Ffs.

This is one of the biggest non issues I have ever read 🤣

theduchessofspork · 13/10/2023 23:38

They can eat egg fried rice at the least.

Don’t be such a drama Queen

Wilson79 · 13/10/2023 23:40

You’re not being unreasonable- I wouldn’t let my 3 year old each take out like this because often the salt content is really high but to best honest I find pub menu for children really poor too - often fried food and few veg on offer. But with a new baby and all that disruption then it feels like omelette or something light like that is a good idea given the context you’re in today and not too onerous !

mrshenny · 13/10/2023 23:44

If it's being ordered at their usual meal time then just let them have some. They are kids not babies! Even if it's plain rice and veggies.

If however it's being ordered when they would normally be in bed then obviously the combination of hunger and being overtired isn't worth it. In that situation I'd make them something earlier and get them to bed as normal. Take a mini picnic maybe to make it easier!

I really want a Chinese Takeaway now!!

I can't win anyway. If I volunteer to cook them something simple earlier then I look like a martyr or precious . If I wait until food arrives and they don't like it then mine will get cold!

Ummm you are looking like a martyr and precious

WimpoleHat · 13/10/2023 23:49

Agreed. @mrshenny . I would now give my right arm for a chop suey roll and a portion of fried rice! And - while on the topic - surely the kids would try that? Or some plain rice and some chicken? Can you not make them a sandwich early and then let them have a little try of the takeaway food?

Universalsnail · 13/10/2023 23:51

Let them eat the take away. Honestly I think you are being rediculous sorry.

Ponderingwindow · 13/10/2023 23:53

Food them before and then let them try some bits from the takeaway. They will be fed well, you won’t eat cold food, they won’t consume too much salt, and they will get a chance to try something new without the pressure of being hungry.

CherryMaDeara · 13/10/2023 23:54

Get DH to cooked for the kids whilst you tuck into a hot Chinese or scrambled eggs.

Why is the cooking all on you?

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 13/10/2023 23:57

Make the kids sandwiches. If they don’t like the food give them the sandwiches for dinner. If the kids do like the food lunch is already prepared for the next day.

ThatMrsM · 13/10/2023 23:59

I'd either share a bit of what I was having from the Chinese takeaway with my kids....or I'd make them a sandwich/eggs or beans on toast and put them to bed before the takeaway arrives.

Try not to worry about it, you don't really have to spend time cooking something else for them if it's just a one off. Also, takeaway at someone's house sounds so much better than a pub meal with preschoolers!

PurpleMonkeys · 14/10/2023 00:02

It's really worth thinking about the ills of the world.

In the grand scheme, giving young kids some rice or noodles or crackers or whatever from a takeaway, not really an issue is it.

ThePoshUns · 14/10/2023 00:10

Crikey, what a drama over nothing.
Sweet and sour chicken balls, rice, chips.
Really not that difficult

Goldbar · 14/10/2023 00:18

Make them a cheese sandwich with some cut up apple?

Deadringer · 14/10/2023 00:24

Buy a nice ready made pasta dish in M&S or similar and bung it in the microwave.

HikingforScenery · 14/10/2023 00:41

i think you can ash for msg-free mean at most Chinese takeaways now?

StarlightLime · 14/10/2023 00:47

You're inventing problems where they aren't any, op.

...reheat it?

Fionaville · 14/10/2023 01:06

This is the biggest none issue I've read on here. Either feed them earlier (like most of us have done) or give them some of the take away. At that age, mine liked chicken and sweetcorn corn, a bit of rice, prawn toast, spring rolls...you could even order them some chips from the Chinese if you're desperate.

Millybob · 14/10/2023 01:10

Say don't order for me thanks, I prefer eggs. If you do actually prefer eggs - or are you just looking for drama?

Millybob · 14/10/2023 01:13

Hang on, is this tomorrow's dinner? You've got your knickers in a twist about making scrambled eggs - or not - tomorrow?
Don't sweat the big stuff, will you?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/10/2023 01:45

Make them sandwiches, yogurt and fruit
Or
Chicken balls/ chow mein from the Chinese if they will be awake
Don't sweat the small stuff

Caterpillarsleftfoot · 14/10/2023 01:52

Surely stir frys, rice, vegetables are part of your child's normal repertoire?

Unless they would have had something beige and chips in the pub (which i would hugely object up putting my preschooler) then the Chinese stir Fry's are a much better option? Just need to be careful of the salt content in a lot of it.

StarlightLime · 14/10/2023 01:55

What would they have had at the pub, op? I'm intrigued as to why they could have a pub meal, but not a takeaway.

justjeansandanicetop · 14/10/2023 02:07

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:13

Guess they might like it but they've not had it before. By the early evening they'll be really hungry/ grumpy and usually I'm bed by time it will arrive

Well then give them something at their normal time (sandwiches, or something g easy) and enjoy your Chinese when they are in bed?
