To not want to feed the kids takeaway

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:06

Visiting family, plan was for pub meal out for a celebration. Due to a happy arrival of a baby pub meal cancelation.

However back up plan is a Chinese takeaway. I have preschoolers ! Basically I'm going to be stuck cooking for kids in an unfamiliar kitchen whilst everyone else tucks into their takeaway. Then eat mine cold so as not to look u grateful where as it i'd rather have hot scrambled egg on toast as im cooking it anyway. Ffs.

What a puzzling thread... My kids ate all kinds of 'foreign' food from about 2 - Italian, Turkish, Lebanese, Indian, Portuguese...... and Chinese, Thai...... as well as Korean BBQ. Japanese cuisine wasn't as popular then as it is now, but in time they developed a taste for sushi as well. Oh, and they loved cheese fondue and raclette.

Mine too. I don't understand this at all. In my family you feed kids what you eat. The only draw back is then they take all the good stuff lol

CurlewKate · 14/10/2023 03:09

And if worst comes to worst and you are "stuck in the kitchen" somebody will surely keep your dinner warm or microwave it for you when you're ready to eat?

temperedolive · 14/10/2023 05:00

My DC are half Taiwanese. They eat stinky tofu, jellyfish salad, chicken anuses, etc with the Taiwanese half of the family and roasts and things on toast with my half. It's never done them any harm that I can see. It's good for children to develop a diverse palate.

YokoOnosBigHat · 14/10/2023 05:07

I bet you're fun at parties, OP.

Newtothis2005 · 14/10/2023 05:41

Apart from all the unnecessary timing drama I agree that I wouldn’t feed my pre schooler Chinese takeaway

ChampagneLassie · 14/10/2023 05:44

From your various posts it sounds like you’d like to give them scrambled eggs before the takeaway arrives and then it’s their bedtime. Why not just ask to do that and stick to that? Then eat yours when arrives / once toddlers asleep. Reheat if necessary but say you don’t expect others to wait for you. No need to be a drama lama. Cooking scrambled eggs is simple so I should imagine any kitchen will work

Oblomov23 · 14/10/2023 05:59

I can't grasp why a pre schooler can't have boiled rice, veg etc.

RosesAndGin · 14/10/2023 06:04

I wonder how people with real problems manage.
Just give them some egg fried rice and enjoy the evening (perhaps they could even go to bed slightly late to avoid everything clashing with bed time, it's an out there suggestion I know but give it a go, it might work!)
They are kids, they won't combust eating a takeaway and going to bed a bit late.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 14/10/2023 06:07

Just feed them earlier at their usual dinner time then if they are awake, let them try some takeaway when it arrives.

You will surely have to give them something earlier anyway otherwise they will be starving by the time the food arrives if they are usually in bed by then.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/10/2023 06:12

You’re just looking for a problem that doesn’t exist. If the take away is arriving at a time that is good for them then give them some. If it’s once they are bed then give them something else but then there is no reason for you to need to eat yours cold (you said yours would be cold as you would be too busy making their food but you won’t as they will be in bed by then).

it sounds like you don’t want a take away and are trying to create problems that don’t exist.

given the circumstances it makes sense that you are getting a take away rather than going to the pub so just get on with it and stop sulking

Climbingthehillfast · 14/10/2023 06:48

Massive overreaction.

IggityZiggity · 14/10/2023 07:39

Cold lunchbox dinner for the kids that you can prep in the morning.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 14/10/2023 11:30

Hope you are feeling better today. You sound totally fed up OP. Hope things improve soon.

Plenty that you could have ordered to suit kids for future reference. As PP said egg foo yung, chips, egg fried rice, lots of veg dishes etc.

Janieforever · 14/10/2023 11:38

You need to get your kids used to trying different foods. There are plenty of choices on a Chinese menu kids usually would eat. You can normally order plain rice, chips, sweet and sour chicken (just don’t add the sauce ) and many plain chicken dishes. I don’t understand your issue.

Birdh0use · 13/10/2023 22:13

Guess they might like it but they've not had it before. By the early evening they'll be really hungry/ grumpy and usually I'm bed by time it will arrive

Then just make their tea early and put them to bed, and if you want scrambled eggs on toast have it. It’s really not hard to make scrambled eggs on toast in any kitchen.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/10/2023 11:41

Chinese food is probably far healthier than British pub food, which you don’t have a problem with 🤷‍♀️

This.. If they usually in bed by time it arrives.. then make them something earlier, then enjoy your chinese later when they in bed...

caringcarer · 16/10/2023 02:05

Why can't the kids have takeaway too? Either rice or chips and beef or chicken and veg.

What is the "puzzling" factor for you, out of interest?
I get that these diverse tastes are the norm for your children, but surely you have a degree of awareness that it wouldn't be the norm for some other children?

notquitesoyoung · 16/10/2023 04:43

If the takeaway will be too late for the DC feed them earlier, if you don't think they are going to like it and would rather feed them earlier then do that. If family members have an issue with your choices around food for your DC then it's best to have that disagreement and get it out the way, hopefully putting a stop to feeling the way you do in the future. You don't need to 'cook' as an alternative you can take a perfectly nutritional balanced meal with you for the DC which requires no cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen. Knocking up scrambled eggs on toast almost anyway isn't really that challenging though. The headache after the last Chinese takeaway would most likely be MSG so try and go for something which is less likely to contain it or specifically ask about it to try and avoid.
