Chickenpox

Chickenpox is doing the rounds in my daughter's year at school. She came home from school today complaining of feeling poorly. She has a couple of spots as well so I suspect she might have chickenpox. We'll see if she has more spots in the morning.

My question is, can I still take my older daughter to her dance class in the morning. Older daughter is perfectly fine. Unfortunately I'd have to take my younger daughter with me when I drop my older daughter off, as my husband is away on business so there's no one at home to look after her. I don't want to make a class full of children poorly.

Yes, there's no requirement for contacts to quarantine

Royalbloo · 13/10/2023 20:20

Of course you can, don't worry

It depends, will she actually go inside the room with the kids in the class or will she just be on the street for a minute while you send your other daughter in? I wouldn’t take her inside anywhere if she has chickenpox. It spreads easily and you don’t know who is more vulnerable, i.e. pregnant women, people going through chemo.

If she can stay in the car or will just be outside the building for a minute then I’d say it’s ok.

But is it ok for my younger daughter to come with me when I drop my older daughter off? So essentially my younger daughter wouldn't be quarantining.

What does dropping her off (and presumably picking her up) involve?

I would have to take my poorly child into the building unfortunately. I could avoid taking her into the room with the other children though.

Sorry OP, but unless you can get a friend to take her, I think it would be best to give dancing a miss this weekend.

I wouldn't no because you have to take the you get one out with chicken pox which if caught be adults can be dangerous and can cause birth defects if caught by pregnancy women

elliejjtiny · 13/10/2023 21:47

No you shouldn't. When my older dc had chicken pox I was told not to take my younger dc to preschool or their hospital appointments. Dc1 had chicken pox for 2 weeks and then the next day dc2 got it. He had it for 2 weeks too so nearly a month off preschool.

User3735 · 13/10/2023 22:02

No, of course you can't take a child with chicken pox around other people. If you could leave her in the car and get someone to come to the car and collect your other dd, or you could drop at the door and not go in then it would be ok, but you definitely can't take her inside.

Glassfullofdreams · 13/10/2023 22:10

Thanks everyone. I won't take my eldest to dance class tomorrow.

The incubation period for chickenpox (time from exposure to developing it) is up to 3 weeks. Kids can be infectious for 2 days before spots appear.

I wouldn't take a child with active chickenpox anywhere, but chances are if it's a group of kids at school together as well as dance classes it will just circulate anyway. You can't keep your kids off for weeks just in case, and they could be spreading it around for 2 days anyway.
