Would this bother you?

I work in a small classroom as a TA. The other TA in the room told me today (in front of kids) that she had noticed I never wash my hands. I said that I do and she said "I notice everything in this room and you have never washed your hands'. I was so embarrassed... I do wash my hands after the bathroom but wouldn't wash them during the day as such. (Unless they were dirty which they don't get in this workplace). We have a sink in the room.

The students are older - I wouldn't be holding hands with them. We don't do arts and crafts or anything like that - my role is often escorting these students between rooms.

She said this in an accusatory way...it was not discreet. Or jokey. There was silence between us after.. I think I was a bit shocked.

Am I oversensitive or is she rude?

Not just unprofessional of her, but bloody rude to make a comment like that in front of pupils, yes. She's not a "Wash Hands 700 Times a Day Because Covid" person is she?

Having said that, according to a TA friend of mine, it is running riot through the school she works at, and there's loads of staff and pupils off.

Why do you need to be randomly washing your hands? I think she needs to get a grip.

sprigatito · 13/10/2023 18:39

Of course it would bother me, it was incredibly rude and confrontational. If she makes any further comments I would mention it in supervision. You don't have to put up with unprofessional behaviour.

Is she the type to try and insinuate something? If maybe just make a note of it and if it happens again let the line manager know as it's rude, unprofessional and disrespectful

Thanks so much for the replies... I won't say anything for the moment but I have made a note of it as there is an emerging pattern of behaviour from her.

Very rude of her. She was obviously trying to bring you down and embarrass you. Very unprofessional to say so in front of the students especially.
As long as you’re washing your hands when you need to she should keep her mouth shut!

“I notice everything”… erm, except how to speak politely to other people? Sounds horrible, can’t stand self-appointed behaviour police
