Hey, has anyone here ever done a solo holiday (or could be holiday with friends/family etc) , and something happened that made you think you’ve made a mistake? So you went back home/returned early?

I have no problem travelling solo, I enjoy it. However, I’m starting to feel I’ve made a mistake. I had a scary taxi experience (this was booked my the hotel) where I thought I was going to get murdered and the language barrier made it extremely difficult to communicate with the driver, and the lady he brought along.

In addition, the place I’m staying at is lovely but it’s also dark and secluded, and the service is far from professional and staff are quite rude. I’m really not used to this.

They’ve also mis-sold the hotel villa too. They say it has two restaurants for example but really it’s them making the food which they bring to your door. There’s no hotel etc to contact reception , you WhatsApp a guy to order food etc.

I also don’t have my luggage, as it wasn’t transferred to my connecting flight, and I’m trying to sort that out.

I feel uncertain and just want to leave tbh.

I know I’ll likely lose money but tbh, the way I feel right now I don’t mind. I don’t see myself regretting it.

Hey, I’m in Thailand. Booked the place via Booking.com, flights were booked separately.

Im not sure if I can get another place at such short notice, never been in this position before. Someone suggested telling the hotel tomorrow morning that I’m checking out early and seeing if they would be willing to give a refund/partial refund.

I told the guy when I got here about the car experience etc but I don’t think he cares, he made a few questionable comments too.

I’m still waiting to see if my luggage is even going to come. I think I’ve just made a big mistake choosing to come here. I’d much rather come back home in all honesty

If you want to come home then come home. You don’t have anything to prove to anyone and it’s your holiday so do what you want to do. I think it’s good to listen to your instincts. I have never left a holiday early personally but have occasionally regretted not doing so (more because of my mental state not being great at the time and not really enjoying it than feeling unsafe though).

I personally absolutely love Thailand but there are definitely some dodgy areas. And people. But most Thais are kind and hospitable. Whereabouts in Thailand are you? I do think if you have the money then having gone all that way you should be able to find somewhere else where you’d feel safe and comfortable and well looked after fairly easily at short notice. And who can find you a decent taxi driver you can call throughout etc. Which is an alternative to going home.

It's absolutely up to you, but I think the main thing you need to do is move to a different area with a different hotel. Accommodation is cheap in Thailand, as is travel, move somewhere better and enjoy your trip. The airport can divert luggage wherever you go (I had a bag trail right through Croatia once before catching up with me 3 destinations later). Whereabouts are you? Koh Lanta, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan are all very pleasant for tourists if you are near any of them and you should be able to find somewhere fairly easily. Krabi and Koh Samui are nice, Chiang Mai or Sukhotai park areas in the north are great. Hat Yai, Pattaya etc are dismal and weird, Chiang Rai has some ropey elements.
