Flu mist spray just two days before my son’s party

The flu mist spray at my son’s school is being administered next Thursday. His 5th birthday party is on the Saturday.

AIBU to be panicking about this? I know some children have an immune response afterwards and come down with a mild version of the flu. We’ve invited the whole class, he’s so excited about his party and having his friends there. I’ll be so gutted for him if he or they are unwell. I can’t believe the timing of it!

In all the years mine have had it I've never known any of them (3 kids) or their friends to be ill from it.

Sanch1 · 13/10/2023 09:39

None of my 3 kids have ever been ill following it in the passed 7 years we've been having it. Never heard of anyone having an issue. My youngest had a slight snotty nose this week after having it. Complete non issue.

Flamingogirl08 · 13/10/2023 09:51

My kids have never had any reaction tonight. Nor have their friends from what I understand.

EmilyEllisBell · 13/10/2023 10:00

Thanks all, it might be just me worrying unnecessarily but I’ll be gutted if he misses it or if his friends do.

It's not a live vaccine, so he'll be fine.

It is a live vaccine

EmilyEllisBell · 13/10/2023 10:40

I thought it was a live vaccine , that’s what I’m worried about.

It’s not live it’s attenuated.

It’s not live it’s attenuated.

To be specific, it is a live attenuated vaccine. It is live, but the virus has been weakened (attenuated) so that it cannot cause flu in healthy people. This is why you should not have it if you have a weakened immune system.

StoneWashJeansWithAMatchingJacket · 13/10/2023 10:57

Never known any child to get any side effects, much less ones that made it not possible to attend a birthday party from having the nasal flu vaccine and my children first had it about 10 years ago.

EmilyEllisBell · 13/10/2023 17:10

I’ll try not to worry, it would be £60 deposit down the drain also!

Sidge · 13/10/2023 18:42

It is a live attenuated vaccine, it can’t cause flu but can cause a runny nose and a slight temperature.

I’m sure his party will be fine.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2023 18:54

My 2 have not had side effects from it in all the years they had it

The nasal spray a live vaccine whereas the injection isn't

Rainallnight · 13/10/2023 18:57

My DC have never had an issue with it.

HeliosPurple · 13/10/2023 18:57

I’m a teacher. My classes have it every year and they are always absolutely fine. Please don’t worry about this any more.

EmilyEllisBell · 14/10/2023 11:20

Thanks everyone for your reassurances.

Why would they come down with ‘flu? It’s not a live vaccine.

boomboom109283 · 14/10/2023 11:22

Honestly this is nothing to worry about. It wouldn’t even cross my mind.

The nasal spray given to children is indeed "live" as stated above in the thread. I know this because, as the parent of an immune suppressed child, we are told very clearly which vaccines they must not have, and the flu spray is one.

The flu injected vaccine is not live and my DD gets that one each year, before the flu squirts are done in her school.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/10/2023 11:54

Wow, every day’s a school day Two adult kids and I really didn’t know this. Thanks MumofCrohnie. I took our grandson for his just last week and it definitely wasn’t mentioned (not that it would have made any difference, we take any vaccines we can get!)

Obviously, ignore my comment OP.

Watsername · 14/10/2023 13:45

I work in a school. Absence after the nose spray is not noticeably different to any other day.

It will be fine x

35965a · 14/10/2023 13:47

Mine are a little older and I’ve never heard of any problems afterwards with any dc in their school or nursery.

Oysterbabe · 14/10/2023 13:56

It will be absolutely fine. My school had it 2 days ago and my son is off to a party in a minute.
There weren't any children missing from football practice this morning.

Patchesofdrizzle · 14/10/2023 13:58

Getting a vaccine might sometimes make a kid think they can get away with pulling a sickie from school, but not as tempting to pull a sickie for a party

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 14/10/2023 15:04

I've worked in a school for 8 years and never known a child to be off the day after getting the flu spray.
