Cancelling holiday to Oman

Confusedmothe · 12/10/2023 22:34

i really hope this doesn’t come across as insensitive in light of all the recent news, my family and I are due to be going to Muscat next week for half term and I am getting really nervous of going. I see this as quite a fast moving situation and I would feel insensitive as a westerner going on holiday to a Middle East country in light of what is happening. Please let me know what you think?

Is this a joke?

You do realise Muscat is the same distance from the Gaza Strip as London is from the frontline in Ukraine?

404usernotfound · 12/10/2023 22:39

@Absolutelymassesofcourgettes that’s EXACTLY what I was about to say 😅

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/10/2023 22:40

Seriously?

Cheshiresun · 12/10/2023 22:41

Really? I have friends still going to Egypt and Cyprus resorts for half term, and they are much nearer.

Confusedmothe · 12/10/2023 22:42

You can’t compare Cyprus with Oman. Tbh there is absolutely no way I would go to Egypt either.

This has to be a wind up?

Absolutelymassesofcourgettes · 12/10/2023 22:45

Has to be!

Cheshiresun · 12/10/2023 22:45

YABU

Missingmyusername · 12/10/2023 22:46

Egypt is close but Oman? 🤦🏼‍♀️

Groovy48592747 · 12/10/2023 22:46

What? 😅YABU

Confusedmothe · 12/10/2023 22:48

Well that’s good news, I will feel reassured that I was worrying for nothing.

So you're not going to cancel? I wouldn't cancel, unless the Foreign Office advise against travel.

divinededacende · 12/10/2023 22:51

It's probably safer than holidaying in Eastern Europe in the context of the Ukraine war. Oman is a long way away from what is a fairly localised conflict. The wider middle east isn't in any imminent danger of becoming a war zone. Israel might have beef with Iran off the back of this but even then, it's not a huge risk of escalation as they have enough on their plate for now. Israel is a comparatively small country in the grand scheme of things.

The middle east isn't monolithic, its as big and varied a region as any other.

Saggypants · 12/10/2023 22:51

The Gulf states tend to keep themselves well out of any dramas - I lived in one of them while the last Iraq war raged on 1000km or so away. I genuinely wouldn't worry about Oman. It's a wonderful place.

Confusedmothe · 12/10/2023 22:51

Yep

Saggypants · 12/10/2023 22:54

I agree Egypt is too close both geographically and politically,. GCC countries, fine. In my opinion of course - and I'm a randomer on the internet - trust the foreign office's advice on the day.

katscamel · 13/10/2023 04:22

Oman is perfectly safe, and the Omanis are the friendliest in the Gulf.
If you were heading to Lebanon, Egypt or Jordan I'd be more concerned but the GCC countries are fine and protests etc are strictly controlled (if they happen).

Yes, it’s insensitive to the Omanis. Do them a favour and cancel your trip. They can do without you.

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 13/10/2023 06:32

Omg is this real? Loads of us live in the Middle East, its not really such a drama as Ukraine or Gaza because we don't have the British media ramming it down our throats constantly. Apart from empathy with Palestine, which is not something you would oppose if you chose to live here, life continues much more peacefully and safely than the OPs neighborhood, I can assure you. 😀🤣🤣🤣

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 13/10/2023 06:34

All of you defending Oman, you do realise LGBTQ and the rest is illegal in Oman??? That they have OFW like other ME countries? If the OP was going to Dubai or Qatar you would all be crying about it. Hypocritical much?

It's a bit worrying that you have no idea about a country you are visiting including it's location in the world.

Confusedmothe · 13/10/2023 07:01

Sadly sarcasm doesn’t always translate here. I wish you a good day.

I’m not sure they’re defending all of Oman’s policies etc (these haven’t changed so presumably the OP was comfortable with travelling there when she/he booked). Just pointing out that the current political situation in Israel/Palestine is unlikely to make a trip there unsafe (I would say exactly the same about Dubai)

Any richer state and the whole thread would be I wouldn't go there if you paid me silliness
