Car parks!

I am by no means a large lady, I'm smaller than average.

I want to know how on earth do people bigger than me get out of their cars in car parks when they are parked next to another car??

I find I have to manoeuvre my way out of the door slowly and carefully, and I usually only have a couple of inches grace (if that) before my door knocks the car next to me. It's even harder if I have a bag over my shoulder or in my hand.

If I was overweight, I'd be calling this out as bloody discriminatory.

One reason I'm glad I lost 2 stone 😂

Put your hand between your car door and the next door car, so that you can't damage the next door car, then squeeze out. Hurts like hell on the hand, but no danger of damage.

If I can't do that then I climb into the back and exit through the sliding door.

I’m a size 10, I wriggle put whilst holding into the door on the outside so it doesn’t hit the car next to me.
judging from two small dents in my doors, others are less considerate.

Cars have got bigger. Not sure how people with 4x4s manage in some car parks.

kitsuneghost · 12/10/2023 13:27

I am obese and manage fine

If its a really tight space or the car next is over the lines I put my hand round the door frame where it would be first to hit to make sure I don't bang the car next to me.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/10/2023 13:28

I park at the back of the car park.

The problem is cars have got bigger! Saying that, our clio has longer doors than our landrover so can be harder to get out off

eurochick · 12/10/2023 13:31

I have wondered this. I'm fairly slim and in many car parks can only just squeeze my size 10-12 hips out of the car. How to larger or less agile people manage?

SpamIAm · 12/10/2023 13:32

I have the same thought in some toilet cubicles...some are so small that I find myself having to do a matrix style backwards lean to get the door closed. The ones in my local hospital I just couldn't fit in when I was pregnant.

Ariela · 12/10/2023 13:33

I park away from other cars at the far end of the car park. Easy then.

I also have a 4x4 large. I park exactly central to my space. By parking correctly it encourages alongside parkers to also park correctly this enabling me to get back in the car.

I think cars have got a lot bigger over the last couple of decades, but parking spaces don't seem to! I've got two young children to get in and out of car seats and it's a bloody nightmare.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 12/10/2023 13:34

Judging by the dents on my car and some recent observations, plenty of people just throw open their car door as hard and wide as they can without reference to anything or anyone else.

Glad I drive an old banger.

NalafromtheLionKing · 12/10/2023 13:57

I’m not skinny but my car is 😄. I always park between two cars which are already parked if possible to avoid them flinging their doors open on mine, ideally not 4x4s and with the largest gap between them.

longtompot · 12/10/2023 14:16

I put my hand over the edge of the door so there is no damage. But you are right, some car parks are a squeeze to get in and out of cars

Stephisaur · 12/10/2023 14:18

I'm overweight but I drive a Mini Clubman. It's not a massive car, so I don't tend to have issues unless the car next to me has parked right on the line.

As above, hand on the door when opening it. Bag is in boot/backseat so can be safely grabbed after I have gotten out.
