Recs for autumn long weekend trip

So the AIBU part of this is: AIBU to think of doing a long weekend trip with friend within the UK in the next month or two, when we have the alternative available of going in spring? Wouldn’t spring be nicer? (I think it would, so it’s really: is my friend BU to want to do it in autumn)?

The non-AIBU part of the post is: assuming we do do it in autumn, where should we go? Will be coming from London, and would prefer being able to rely on public transport though I could maybe drive if necessary. Friend is from abroad and hasn’t travelled loads in the UK. I’ve done quite a few of the obvious cities but wouldn’t necessarily mind doing them again: Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, York. But obviously the idea of going somewhere new to me as well is quite appealing. I don’t think it has to be a major city but a mixture of some town cultural and sightseeing stuff (nice architecture, galleries or museums, bookshops and markets, cafes) plus some nice scenery and walks would be good. I think I’d prefer not more than 3 hours to get to, so somewhere like Edinburgh is out (though I’ve got to say a part of me is really really tempted by Cornwall, but I know we’d use up half the time getting there and back).

A few possible thoughts so far:

Lyme Regis, Dorset? I quite like the idea of a seaside location
Buxton?
Norwich?

Where would you recommend?
