What's the cheekiest thing you have seen in a Facebook selling / give away group?

Inspired by a recent post in one of my locals, where someone posted a fairly mature cherry blossom tree, asking if anyone would like it for free, but they would have to dig it up out of the garden first. So essentially they were looking for a free tree surgeon 😀

OP posts:

This chair that I think someone died in for the bargain price of £50

I was just looking on vinted. the description says one size while the label in the picture shows different
Another said size XL was perfect for her as she was size 8-10 , how can you take these people seriously?

SweetFemaleAttitude · 11/10/2023 19:07

Sofa's, with a tiny bit knocked off the original price.

People need it gone from their homes. The person taking it is actually doing THEM a favour.

Should be a few hundred quid off minimum

Gave away a lovely baby rocking chair thing on a ‘community gifting’ page to someone who said they had no car so couldn’t collect, drove over with it to find a BMW on the drive, they didn’t even say ‘thank you’ and despite asking to have it as their baby ‘desperately needed’ a rocking seat, they posted it for sale on another group that same evening. I felt taken for a mug and have never gifted anything on that site since.

Cheeky fuckers!

I delivered a free stairgate recently but definitely no car on scene lots of kids in house and very poor area, so I was happy to help. I’d have been pissed off by your scenario.

Free furniture like a "chest "o" draweres" must be grey/black ikea brand new delivered to xyz address immediately thnx

The best is Chester draws

Offcom · 11/10/2023 19:31

Friend was giving away a steriliser and the recipient asked if she could send a reminder so she didn’t forget to pick it up.

Literally takes longer to type that than just set your own reminder??

aprilshowers2015 · 11/10/2023 19:37

I saw a good one recently, an X-Factor worthy tale of woe, needing to fully furnish a 3 bed house for free. Kind people offering various bits but the OP insisted on photos and rejected most things as not their style.
Then asking for delivery on anything they did like.

Omg, that is absolutely rank.

I recently saw someone advertising a cheap metal bed. It was free but only on the condition that you also take the stained and manky mattress which needed to be immediately disposed of.

Youcunnyfunt · 11/10/2023 19:43

I once sold a conservatory … I was the cheeky fucker 😂
It was on the proviso that they came with labour and tools and took the entire everything away.
They were very happy that they got the conservatory but I couldn’t believe I’d managed to avoid booking labourers, a van, and the dump and made money in the process!

sqirrelfriends · 11/10/2023 19:46

People posting about some awful thing that has happened to them and asking for donations to help and then selling those donations on marketplace.

Theres a lady known for this in my area. Absolutely appalling behaviour, one of the people who donated could really have used the cash herself but thought she was helping someone out.

Floogal · 11/10/2023 20:03

Apart from the shameless CFs, I roll my eyes at the people who sell used goods for new prices (or trying to 'flip' a profit). I think these flippers watch too much Blaze TV 😂

CaptainSevenofNine · 11/10/2023 20:07

We once gave away 2 sheds (three in garden when we moved in, only needed one!) but only if the people wanting them could come and dismantle them.

We didn't have the tools and actually it would be better for the person to be taking them down to know how to put it back up again. (Or to make the mistakes in dismantling the sheds)

A shed is expensive so I think it was a good deal.

Abovemypaygrade · 11/10/2023 20:15

I don’t think giving away a mature tree is CF territory, mature trees are £100’s so someone digging it up and moving it is potentially getting a bargain and the giver is being environmentally conscientious
I gave away loads of garden bits when I moved to this house two years ago , plants , small trees , shrubs , rocks , planters , and had more people that wanted them than I had bits to give , and yes all items were “in situ” for them to collect / dig up , I move fairly often and always strip back the garden by offering items for free like this
I have some very mature roses I will offer up soon, they cost a fortune at a specialist nursery so for the cost bit of effort someone will get an absolute bargain

I know this isn’t a selling page tale but it fits the CF theme.
Bought a new TV, put the old one in the new box and left outside for the dustmen the next day. Fairly predictably by the morning it had been nicked.
In the evening the chap who stole it knocked and asked if I had the remote control as it wasn’t in the box…
Reader I laughed him down the path

Why? It was being thrown out anyway, don't see the problem.

Or me! I’m judging you hard for just throwing out a perfectly functional tv tbh.

MichonnesBBF · 11/10/2023 20:22

Nope! no she most certainly is not poor...just someone who likes to take but not give.

Bigbiggirlinabigbigworld · 11/10/2023 20:22

I responded to a post on a kindness group during covid offering to pick up groceries for an elderly person who was shielding. I got a private message from a young woman saying she was busy as she her kid's school was closed so could I do her shopping too (I work full time and have 2 young children who were both at home during covid...)

Bigbiggirlinabigbigworld · 11/10/2023 20:24

I also posted a photo of some toys on a free group. Got a private message asking me for the toys and also saying they wanted other things in the background of the photo which I hadn't offered.

ichundich · 11/10/2023 20:57

Someone asking to sponsor them on their trek through a tourist beauty spot on another contintent "to raise money for ... charity". Yep, I'd like someone to sponsor my next holiday too!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/10/2023 21:05

Someone requesting a campervan for free...

CaramelMac · 11/10/2023 21:30

There’s someone on our local group who every day for the last few weeks has been posting an ad for “professional photo shoots” but the accompanying pictures are worse than your average person would take with one of those disposable cameras from the 1990s. He’s not had a single like or comment and yet every day the post reappears.

SquashPenguin · 11/10/2023 21:35

My partner was selling his chest of drawers last year before we moved, and a woman messaged him asking if she could have them for free because she had too many clothes and couldn’t afford any furniture for them. We laughed 😆

SquirrelFan · 11/10/2023 21:38

@FineWordsForAPorcupine that's what I thought, too - and isn't it better that someone get some use out of an item than it get thrown away?

Nbobun · 11/10/2023 21:38

Someone advertising "lego building service" and "price depending on number of pieces". Starting from £10. Basically looking to build other people's lego and get paid.

Grassy82 · 11/10/2023 21:52

I have given lots of things away for free but I have done it in summer and said ‘it’s our the front of X house first come first served’ and then it’s always been taken. Same thing I walked past someone’s house they had a free garden table and chairs out front, too then and next year I changed my mind and gave it away for free to someone else.

However I bought something local fitness related for £20 on FB and told the lady I was going to walk round to her house (max 10 min walk). She never said anything about needing a car or 2 people. This was likely my mistake too but this thing was unexpectedly heavy (like 20kg) and she never told me it was that heavy. I couldn’t pull it along or anything I had to carry it. Instead of going back to get the car and abandoning it I stupidly walked it home and it took me over 30 mins as I had to keep stopping and I felt sick by the time I got back and shoved it into the shed!
