Is this really weird?

Hi All,

I bought a new build a year ago with my husband. The house is ok, very few snags (luckily), one thing we did notice a few weeks ago was the floorboards dropping so you could see them in the ceiling. We reported to the developer who in fairness got someone out to fix it pretty quick.

Here's where I find this a bit weird though... they sent a husband and wife team. The husband did the work whilst the wife just sort of cleaned up... except she didn't just clean up his mess (paint etc) ... I came home (yes I did leave because I have to do school drops offs, shopping etc and they were there 3 days in total) and she had emptied my dishwasher, folded my washing from both the drying rack and tumble dryer and was dusting my bedroom!

I know in reality this is very nice of her to do but equally AIBU to find this strange? she didn't need to be in my bedroom, and she was going through my cupboards etc. They are jobs that needed to be done and I was coming home to do them! I thanked her and said please don't worry about doing it, id rather she sat and had a cuppa and I'll do the jobs as I quite enjoy them and id rather she helped her husband than go through my things but she just flitted off to find more to help me with!

Thanks if you got through all that! AIBU??

Burglar.

caerdydd12 · 11/10/2023 12:17

I don't think I'd be okay with that at all. You've not asked someone to come and root through various rooms, they're round to do one job and one job only.

Bonjovispjs · 11/10/2023 12:18

Really weird, I'd be very unhappy with that.

CampervanKween · 11/10/2023 12:18

Id love that personally but agree it is unusual.

Janieforever · 11/10/2023 12:19

I’d not like that, sounds like she’s bored.

MidnightOnceMore · 11/10/2023 12:20

That is deeply weird and I'd not like it.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 11/10/2023 12:22

Can I ask if she was Thai or Malaysian?

Only anecdotal and I'm honestly not generalising but the two Thai ladies I know do things like this and I find it nice but strange.

mrmagpie · 11/10/2023 12:23

Really weird. I would complain to the developer who sent them.

No both were British.

I'd be wondering if she was planning on sending me the bill.

mindutopia · 11/10/2023 12:25

Yes, it's weird. My first assumption would be an excuse to have a nose about either (a) she's a nosy busy-body who chaperones her husband everywhere and likes to nose about people's things, or (b) she was looking for valuables. Either way, massively inappropriate and deserving of a complaint. What if she broke something or something went missing (are you sure it hasn't?)? I doubt insurance would properly cover that.

JustPretend · 11/10/2023 12:27

The fuck? A stranger came into your home and tidied up?!

That's weird, I would have had serious words for her.

CyclingForSanity · 11/10/2023 12:35

Sorry but that would freak me out. Unless there were crossed wires with what she was supposed to be doing, but then you've told her not to and she carried on?
Sod that.

anareen · 11/10/2023 12:35

I don't think you are wrong to feel unsettled by this. You are paying her for a specific service. Nothing else. Not to mention the standards to which they hold their company. They will not get a very good name continuing to do this.

britespark1 · 11/10/2023 12:54

We had to get lots of snags sorted when we moved into our new house and nothing like that ever happened. Very strange!

CurlewKate · 11/10/2023 13:15

Unlike most Mumsnetters, I am happy for anyone to go anywhere in my house and I would be happy for anyone to do a bit of housework for me! Bring it on, I say! But I do agree it's a little unusual. Maybe she was bored?

Lotta0 · 11/10/2023 13:24

Really weird Confused I'd gently let the company know it's kind but weird

FictionalCharacter · 11/10/2023 13:32

Tell the developer. This wasn’t a husband and wife team, she clearly wasn’t sent to do the job with him or even assist. She was just tagging along with him and decided to “make herself useful”.
The developer needs to know that his tradesman is taking his wife along and the wife is doing things in people’s houses, nothing to do with the job that the tradesman is being paid for.
They especially need to know that she was going through your cupboards.

I agree with this. It's completely inappropriate and unprofessional of them. Definitely let the developer know as I doubt this will be the first or last time it happens.

bananaboats · 11/10/2023 14:00

Very strange and I agree with pp she had no real reason to be there and I would complain to the developer

EllesBells27 · 11/10/2023 14:10

Thank you, I'm just a little shocked as no... it's not her job and she was clearly very comfortable!

I'm always happy for trades people etc to help themselves to tea/coffee/biscuits but folding my washing was just odd!!

I've let the developer know but been careful with my wording. I don't want them to get into serious trouble as she was very nice but equally not something she should be doing!

YANBU to find it weird

Ive had similar but from an existing cleaner, and was very appreciative (when in early weeks with DD she would do ‘extras’ so emptied the dishwasher, even packed for our holiday for us!)
