to estimate that this brunch wouldn’t be more than 1000 calories

Be kind.
Small sausage, rasher of bacon, fried egg, spoonful of baked beans, fried mushrooms and couple of handfuls of chips.
Is 1000 calories a reasonable estimate as calorie-counting atm?
Thanks

Small all day breakfast in Wetherspoons is 900-1000 calories, if that helps

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 10/10/2023 17:36

I’d say around 800 calories. Maybe 650 if not all fried.

Coffeerum · 10/10/2023 16:00

@ShirleyPhallus I mean, turning a “couple” of handfuls in to “several” is exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about

Is a couple not more than one which is the same as "several" and just as imprecise?

A couple means two, several means more than two

Mumoftwotoddlers · 10/10/2023 15:41

I'd estimate more around 1300/1500, especially if you consider what each item is fried in and what fat percentage sausages used

Don't be ridiculous it would be lucky to be half of that.

Kate9423 · 10/10/2023 17:47

Are the chips frozen pre-made or homemade not in oil etc? That's where your calories are....'handfuls' can be big. I'd easily say 1000 if it's frozen chips

ginandtonicwithlimes · 10/10/2023 17:50

I would have eaten more. 😂😂

Gcsunnyside23 · 10/10/2023 17:53

TheGirlWhoLived · 10/10/2023 15:44

What do you mean be kind? Surely nobody will come along and say “a SMALL SAUSAGE YOU FAT BITCH”

😂

BarbaraofSeville · 10/10/2023 17:53

Without a photo it's hard to say how much food there was as the description is very subjective. What is a 'small' sausage? 'Couple of handfuls of chips'? How much of the other things?

People have very different expectations of portion sizes. But the Wetherspoons breakfasts pictured above are probably around the same size/calories.

67% are saying IABU to think it was less than 1000 calories though

Not read the full thread, but I am wondering why you are obsessing about this?

I assume you want to lose weight. I hope you want to do so by eating healthily.

So what you do is you work out how many calories a day are realistic to lose weight slowly and steadily, without starving yourself.

Then you compile a few sample menus, e.g.:

  • 2-egg omelette with vegetables or salad, or a big mixed salad plus 2 boiled eggs for brunch
  • fruit or yoghurt or a handful of nuts for an afternoon snack
  • chicken, salmon or tofu and lots of vegetables and half a cup of complex carbs for dinner
  • a couple of squares of dark chocolate or a cup of berries or grapes for dessert

Rotate, with variations. And walk lots and/or exercise most days.

Then let yourself have the occasional fry-up, burger, pizza, icecream, whatever - without worrying about the calories.

Janieforever · 10/10/2023 18:01

Some of these are way off, there is no way you’d all that and two handfuls of chips, which is quite a lot of chips for say 600. I wish.

I also think 1000-1200, depending on just how many chips are in two handfuls.

No a couple ge really refers to two of something. Hence why two people.who are going out / married would be a couple.

YireosDodeAver · 10/10/2023 18:06

Totally variable.
Depends whether the egg and the sausage are cooked in fat or 1cal spray. Depends on the sizes of your spoons and hands. Chips can be higher or lower fat depending how they are cooked.

If you felt really satisfied and happy after it, it could have been 1800 calories.

If you felt rather hungry afterwards it might have been only 600 ish.

But the only way to be sure is to weigh each thing and do the maths.

There are no exemptions for only having a certain number of staff members.

So why does the government guidance on their website state it is for places employing more than 250 people?

No need to be unpleasant.
I’m actually trying to stabilise my weight after having lost 10kg in the last 5 weeks. My pyschiatrist has asked me to increase intake to between 1600 and 1800 calories, hence my question about the calories in that brunch.
No obsessing going on here.

@Coffeerum Several is imprecise. A couple is precisely two. So no, not the same.

Coffeerum · 10/10/2023 18:33

Eh I’m going to take “a couple” with a pinch of salt. It rarely means two when people are talking about food, more often than not a couple of biscuits, a couple of handfuls etc means anything from 2-4.
It would have been quicker for a OP to have said 2 if that was the case.

A couple means two.

“two people or things of the same sort considered together”

The op didn’t say she ate a couple of chips]
she said she ate a couple of handfuls.

which is a lot of chips.

Yes it is. But it's still only two handfuls, ie not more than two. Which would be several Grin

fuckssaaaaake · 10/10/2023 19:55

I had 8 rashers of bacon today. Convinced myself the airfryer meant it was healthy 😂

ivemesseduphelp · 10/10/2023 23:54

If this is a one off I really wouldn't worry about the calories - you ate and enjoyed it and that's what counts. One day of eating more won't make you put on weight any less than one day of eating less will make you lose weight.

Divebar2021 · 11/10/2023 00:11

Here’s a calculation although it didn’t have fried bacon as an option. I used a “ cone of chips” but I’m not sure how that correlates…. Handful could be 20 chips or 5. Beans is a small tin so you might need to reduce down for that.

to estimate that this brunch wouldn’t be more than 1000 calories
Saz12 · 11/10/2023 00:35

Id giess at just shy of 1,000: mostly because mushrooms sook up loads of butter/oil when I cook them. So guesstimate of 800 -900 cals.

If you enjoyed it, great. If youre looking to change your diet permanently, I'm sure dont need anyones (patronising) opinion.

Stopwatching · 13/10/2023 11:22

I went back for another one today, only so I can share a photo (honest).

Anyone care to revise your estimate now?

Thanks
