to estimate that this brunch wouldn’t be more than 1000 calories

Be kind.
Small sausage, rasher of bacon, fried egg, spoonful of baked beans, fried mushrooms and couple of handfuls of chips.
Is 1000 calories a reasonable estimate as calorie-counting atm?
Thanks

Chips are a shocker sometime in terms of calories. Depending on the handful, I'd say it will come in under a 1000.

Normcore · 10/10/2023 15:51

I reckon you had the equivalent of a weathersppons breakfast some are over 1235 calories . Your two handfuls of chips could have hundreds of calories in them depending how big they are. A grilled hash brown is 100 calories each. Also did you have mayonnaise, butter, a cappuccino as well, lots of hidden calories there.

Wetherspoons does an all day brunch and it's a sausage, bit of bacon, beans, chips and a fried egg. It's 666.

hilbil21 · 10/10/2023 15:53

So I would say probably 800 max

TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2023 15:54

So a sausage, rasher of bacon, beans, fried egg, fried mushrooms and a portion of chips.
I don’t know, maybe around 1200? I don’t know much about calorific contents but a couple of handfuls of chips must surely just pretty much be a portion?
and it makes a big difference (to the calories) what it was fried in, I guess you can’t really know that unless you’ve cooked it yourself.
I’d call it 1200 calories.
And I’d also forget about it all because eating out is supposed to be a treat!
Aren’t menus supposed to also show the calories now?

Coffeerum · 10/10/2023 15:54

Here we go. This is the kind of distorted nonsense I’m here for in these eating threads.

It really isn't that distorted. Fried sausage, friend bacon, friend eggs, fried mushrooms, several handfuls of fried chips ... all very imprecise measurements but on a typical portion eating out 1300cal or more really isn't that crazy.

Stroopwaffels · 10/10/2023 15:55

TheGirlWhoLived · 10/10/2023 15:44

What do you mean be kind? Surely nobody will come along and say “a SMALL SAUSAGE YOU FAT BITCH”

You're new around here, aren't you?

Just wait for the people to come along going on about how sausages are just the worst sort of ultra processed food, bacon isn't much better, baked beans are basically 100% sugar and you'd be as well having a KitKat, anything fried is 2000 calories before you even start and carbs should never ever be eaten.

Then lots of stuff about "no wonder we have an obesity epidemic" and "we've lost sight of a normal portion size".

OP your breakfast sounds lovely. Have you tried something like My Fitness Pal for tracking calories, it's not perfect but might give you a rough idea. For example, it says that 2 Tesco "finest" sausages are 330 calories, so 165 per sausage, or a fried egg is around 83 calories.

I mean, turning a “couple” of handfuls in to “several” is exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about

Mumoftwotoddlers · 10/10/2023 15:41

I'd estimate more around 1300/1500, especially if you consider what each item is fried in and what fat percentage sausages used

Oh come on!!!

Sidetalk · 10/10/2023 15:56

This would be my guess too. Quote fail!

I would guess over 1000

Glitterybee · 10/10/2023 15:59

Much less than 1000 and I say that as someone who always over estimates!

Coffeerum · 10/10/2023 16:00

@ShirleyPhallus I mean, turning a “couple” of handfuls in to “several” is exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about

Is a couple not more than one which is the same as "several" and just as imprecise?

Dotjones · 10/10/2023 16:03

I'd guess that works out as:
Small sausage 200
rasher of bacon 100
fried egg 125
spoonful of baked beans 50
fried mushrooms 200
couple of handfuls of chips 200

So 875, under 1000 definitely. There's a bit of leeway with the fried egg and especially the mushrooms which soak up oil. Frying them in lard would mean a lot more calories than in olive oil. The mushrooms themselves don't contain many calories, it's all about the oil.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/10/2023 16:04

Well of all the numbers mentioned on this thread, 1000 is probably a good average, so go with that. As a one off it really doesn't matter if it's a couple of hundred out either way.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/10/2023 16:06

Frying them in lard would mean a lot more calories than in olive oil

Why?

All fats and oils have more or less the same amount of calories per g/ml

Comefromaway · 10/10/2023 16:06

The same meal at Wetherspoons would be 666 calories without the mushrooms (which are 91 calories as an extra)

Yes, thanks everyone, 1000 does seem to be in the middle of the estimates so I’ll go with that but try not to eat much more today.

This might help OP, which is closest? Tesco’s cafe breakfast choices.

Graciebobcat · 10/10/2023 16:10

I'll put it in my Nutracheck and let you know.

I had a meal the other day (Sunday lunch) that was meant to be 1500 calories on the menu. Unless they forgot to add the slab of lard there was just no way it was close, more like 800 when I added it all. I know you can add a fair bit more with butter and oil, but it wouldn't double the calories of a meal. They just pull the calorie figure out of their arse.

I didn't particularly want 1500 calories of food anyway even though I'd been for a long walk but it was good to see it was nowhere near that.

Edited

Thanks, wish I’d taken a photo of it now. Closest out of those would be The Breakfast but with mushrooms and chips instead of the hash browns, toast and butter.
Based on that 1000 should cover it 😀

Graciebobcat · 10/10/2023 16:13

Ah, someone has done it already.

The Nutracheck is likely pretty sound. I have had 1500 calories in one dinner and that's more like needing a lie down level whereas 700-800 after exercise = nicely full.

43ontherocksporfavor · 10/10/2023 16:15

Sausage= up to 200 ( fried?)
beans- 50
Bacon- 100-200( fried or grilled?)
2x Handful of chips- 400 if oven but more if fried.
Up to 1000 I think.

'Friend' bacon makes me think you're a cannibal.
