To Expect better communication from cottage owner

We stayed in a luxury cottage and dealt with the owner direct as are indirectly connected with them. The cottage has only 5 star reviews and is beautifully situated and appointed.
However on arrival there was a horrible smell coming from the main bathroom downstairs and lots of flies all over the house. Loads of dead flies on the floors and almost empty cans of fly spray and (gag) a fly strip hanging off one of the cupboards. These apparently were left by the cleaner.
Now I dont know about anyone elses idea of luxury but dead flies don't feature much in my list of expectations.

AIBU to expect the owner to refund the holiday as they should have let us know about the fly infestation and cancel the booking? We could have gone somewhere else less fly infested.
They are not answering emails.

Did you leave immediately?
or were the flies such that you stayed?

Unfortunately we stayed as we had no immediate means of going elsewhere at the time( check in 4pm ) .Didnt realise we should have had an alternative available .
Communicated with the owner who apologised and said that the cleaner would come with more fly spray. She didnt turn up until the next day and she brought 1 single can. She agreed that the flies we indeed a nuisance and would tell the owner what conditions were like. Owner then booked a drain cleaning company to attend -but they would not come until the next day .
And so it went on. We didnt have a day without annoyance.
We left as early as we could arrange things.
