To not want my dd using these words?

One of my dds (8 years old) has started describing people as dinlos or divs. She's picked this up from her nan, and as someone who tries hard not to pass on swearing to her kids it really irks me, i know it's not as severe as real swearing but its still name calling. Do your kids use these kind of words and do you allow it?

Yanbu they are not nice ways to describe people and I wouldn’t want my child having these words in their vocabulary

Caswallonthefox · 08/10/2023 20:11

Stupid is a banned word in my house, as is thicko and the r word. My youngest ds started using the r word and I explained to him that it was offensive and why, never heard him say it since.
If he used either of those words I would not be happy either.

Div (or divvy) is hardly a major insult. There are far worse words she could be using and div wouldn't bother me - I've probably used it myself.
No idea about dinlo - never heard that before.

This. 💯

yeah there are various stores that sell tshirts and prints with dinlo and squinny on lol.

I'm from Portsmouth, don't add the word squinny into the mix or it'll confuse everyone 🤣

MartyFunkhouser · 09/10/2023 10:10

Never heard of dinlo.

Div is a word I use. I honestly don’t know anyone that would know the etymology of the word (and Googling it offers several suggestions), nor care.

I bloody love the word squinny, it just describes the act (whining or whinging for anyone not from Portsmouth) so perfectly!
And dinlo is used in an anti-littering campaign in Portsmouth, as is the shortened version din. ‘Don’t be a din, put it in the bin’

@tiredmum9

She's picked this up from her nan

Is she of Irish Traveller decent? They're the only group of people who I've ever heard those words. But of course, they claim to be an oppressed minority so can get away with anything really!

crumblingschools · 09/10/2023 10:29

I thought the same as you @Give0fecks

Haha, it's a great word!

My DD10 is very anti swearing. She really doesn't like to hear it and we don't swear around her (or much at all really)
We do however say Divvy and Div. In my area its said with a laugh, not insulting at all. My mum and even my nan, who never swore, would even say it. It's the equivalent of 'silly billy' in my family/area.

Yup @Fionaville - it's the equivalent of 'silly billy' here too! ExH is from Hull and it seems to be the same there, he says it all the time and I genuinely had no idea it was considered offensive.

I didn't know where 'nincompoop' came from until today, so thanks PP, I love language and the origin of words.

I know plenty of people who use 'dinlo', including Romany kids who I went to primary school with in the late 80s. Maybe because it seems to be a fairly obscure term, at least judging from the responses here, it's not considered all that offensive?

To add my two pence, I'm Jewish and grew up around Yiddish speakers. Plenty of Yiddish insults have made it into common parlance and I suspect there are non-Jewish posters here who have/would use them without a second thought!

OK she's just called me a c* on the school run? This is too far now I dont know what's got into her

What are the consequences for this behaviour?
Not only are you unhappy with her language you don't like the TV she watches at her friend's. The only solution I can think of is she's not allowed to go there and she is punished her general bad behaviour. You really need to get a grip on this situation OP as it's only going to get worse. Good luck, I know it's not easy.

tiredmum9 · 16/10/2023 22:18

Her calling me a c** pushed me over the edge and I don't think my mum would say that in front of her. She's clearly learnt this from someone else (school maybe?) It's getting to me, I know she's getting older but my lovely little girl wouldn't do this 😥
