Facebook admins & moderators

Can someone confirm whether Facebook admins and moderators get paid? Does it depend on the size of the group (say a group has around 100k members) or is it all voluntary?

I really don’t understand why some admin and mods act the way they do on some groups if it’s not actually a paid role? Can someone pls explain why so many act like drill sergeants?!

I don’t think they get paid unless it’s an organisation/ company behind the group. Most admins/ moderators for groups I’m on act ridiculously though and feel like they are in charge of everything. We have a Facebook group for my local area where anyone can post and update people. The admins get very angry about everything and feel like the run the local area, all because they had a great idea to create a facebook group.

I'm an admin on three Facebook pages. Definitely not paid! All three are generally easy going groups so there's usually not a much moderating needed, but occasionally we do need to step in to calm things down when a discussion looks likely to turn nasty.

I think most mods aren't even noticed, just quietly doing what needs to be done to keep things running smoothly - there are a few where the (little) power goes to their head but they are the exception in my experience.

I run a group with just under 100k members. I don’t get paid. I do get sent the occasional free (low value) item that relates to our group purpose.

We keep things as easy going as possible but do have a relatively strict policy on the posts we accept. We also have a zero tolerance policy on bullying, spam posts and sales. Our group is public which means we need to prevent issues that go against Facebook community standards.

All social media/forum mods are ridiculously power hungry and bias. Yet to see one that isn’t.

Yes this is similar to what I’ve come across! It really made me think whether these people are paid to act like this or if they’re just acting high and mighty because they’re in charge of a group.

Interesting to hear from some people who are admins on this thread too. I’m sure there are some of you that are calm and become big headed but some act like strict headteachers😅

Im an admin on two groups, one work related and one hobby related. I dont really do much apart from accept new members and delete any posts that are not relevant, which to be honest are rare to non-existant. I could not be fucked with the business of micro-managing either group. If it got that bad I'd either pass it on, or shut the group and let someone else set up a replacement 🤷‍♂️

The power is enough of a reward for the admin of my local group. She writes ‘Suzie (admin)’ after every comment she makes in the group, even when she’s not responding as an admin, just so we know how important she is 🙄 (Her name isn’t actually Suzie obviously!)

Sparklesocks · 07/10/2023 21:53

Power corrupts 😄

This is the sort of thing I come across. It’s so strange isn’t it😂

I admin a FB craft group, and I can promise you my fellow admins and I are the polar opposite of power hungry and biased.

MargaritaHargitaysLittleSister · 07/10/2023 22:04

Oh God yes. This ! My local FB area group is "ruled" by several admins, but one in particular is so pedantic its unreal. You can't advertise ANYTHING about your own business on ANY day apart from Wednesday. And then you absolutely HAVE to add a hashtag. I keep wondering who died and made her the Wednesday police 🙄🙄🤣
