Have you ever dumped an entire trolley of food at a till and walked out?

I was in a Lidl store today and a very long queue built up.. and it became apparent that another till was not going to be opened despite the queue getting longer and many of whom had a big trolley load of food. There are no self service tills.

I then saw a man walk to the front and dump his entire shopping on the conveyor belt of an adjacent till and stormed out.

I'm sure if there was more staff this would've been avoided so it wasn't the fault of the person on the till. I know there is pressure on supermarkets to cut costs, but is this now getting to a tipping point in terms of impacting on customer service? Or is it the case that if you go to a so called 'discounter' type shop then you just have to accept that the service levels will be bit lower which allows them to offer lower prices?

Have you ever dumped your shopping at a till and walked out? I thought if the guy wanted to walk out he could, he didn't actually need to go the effort of unloading it all on a belt in a dramatic fashion in front over the worker and then storm out.

I've nearly abandoned my shopping at a self-service till both at Sainsbury's and Morrisons several times.

Both of these supermarkets have the most infuriating self-checkouts ever. I could barely scan 3 or 4 things without the till needing a supervisor to come over and sort the scale out.

I've used ALDI's self-checkouts and they are a dream, they are different ones, and never had a problem.

The closest I've come was when I lived in France and realised once I got to the till that I had forgotten my debit card and had no cash on me Blush

JudgeJ · 07/10/2023 20:29

I once did it at IKEA!, they decided to close the till I'd been queuing for ages at so I put it all on the floor, and there was a lot of stuff, and walked out. Someone called to me You can't just leave that there!

PurpleNebula84 · 07/10/2023 20:29

Yes... Back in the days when Aldi didn't accept credit cards... I didn't realise and didn't have another card with me... I just left them with the shopping to put back... I didn't storm out or anything and I apologised profusely 🙈🙈

Snugglemonkey · 07/10/2023 20:30

I have walked outdoors to queue length a few times. I just left the whole trolley each time.

Very nearly did in Asda last week. My local store has recently reorganised and they've moved everything around. It's hard to find anything now which makes shopping stressful. In addition, they have loads of staff doing picking for the click and collect or deliveries and they use these giant trolleys that obstruct every aisle.

I got to the tills and there were only two manned, with long queues. The self scan area also had a long queue and nothing seemed to be moving. I had frozen items in my trolley (including ice cream) and was afraid they'd start defrosting. I was in the verge of abandoning but then finally reached the conveyor belt.

Yes, in Tesco. Don’t often shop there and the two tier pricing annoys me. Thought I’d check I still had a Tesco store card, couldn’t find it. Thought fuck it, I’ll go to Aldi and left the trolley.

I actually cannot fathom this. Put your bloody shopping back if you've decided you no longer want to shop there, as you can't find your Tesco card.

Utter entitlement.

InvisibleDuck · 07/10/2023 20:31

A basket, once. It was in the early days of covid, the queue was very long and there were people coughing and not keeping their distance. I got panicky and left. I didn't go back in a supermarket for about a year. Shopped online instead. (I'm fine using them now!)

ConcreteUnderpants · 07/10/2023 20:31

Wow! What an arsehole move @Createausername1970.

I saw a woman dump a very full trolley during the pandemic because she was angry screens had been put up and she was required to keep a distance and didn't want to. She pushed it hard so it hit another customer and screamed abuse at the cashier. She was very well spoken and drove off in a Range Rover. I think she was probably struggling a bit.

Why do people always make excuses? Struggling? Weren't we all? More likely that she thought that the rules applied to everyone but Moi .

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 07/10/2023 20:32

Yes. I do it all the time if they refuse to put tills on.......the more people who do it the more time wasted putting it all back and the more supermarkets will pay staff to do the jobs we pay them for.

NalafromtheLionKing · 07/10/2023 20:32

Only once recently-ish when two people pushed/snuck in front of me and I thought fuck this.

Grendell · 07/10/2023 20:32

I have seen this happen many times and I fully support it as it makes the line shorter for me - the one who can emotionally handle waiting in line and can pull out my phone and scroll the time away if necessary. But you angry people in front of me, you keep doing your storm out thing...

Coffeaddict · 07/10/2023 20:32

I abandoned a shop in lidl once. I left the sleeping newborn ( a few weeks can't remember exact age) with DP to get a breather (and do the shopping) but the woke up hysterical and wouldn't take a bottle

Slitheringheights · 07/10/2023 20:33

I had to run out of Aldi to be sick. Dumped whole trolley. Went home and came back about an hour later and trolley was still in the same place. I just continued shopping lol

ChocolateCinderToffee · 07/10/2023 20:33

I did it once in Tesco's. I got to the till with my basket and the checkout guy started scanning it. Then he stopped, sneezed wetly into his hands and all over my shopping and picked up the next item. I said 'I don't want those things now that you've sneezed all over them.' He said very casually 'Ah, sorry . . .' but I was SO grossed out I just walked away.

Finefinefine · 07/10/2023 20:33

Omg so many shitty reasons on here (not all) as to why people have done this. 🙄

Desecratedcoconut · 07/10/2023 20:34

My DM lost her cool and walked away from a trolley full of food when the queues were snaking round the store at Christmas when we were kids. We walked past a few discarded trolleys that day.😬

Mochudubh · 07/10/2023 20:34

A few times, usually around Christmas. Left a full basket in Asda one lunchtime as I'd waited 10mins in the queue and realised I wouldn't get through the checkout in time to get back to work.

Another time in Iceland, 2 tills open, queued up at a till with 2 people in front of me. The checkout operator finished serving the person at the front then put the checkout closed sign up and told the rest of us we'd have to join the queue for the other till, behind people who'd been waiting less time. I e-mailed to complain about that (and apologised for dumping the shopping) and got an apology but that was it.

B&M a couple of Christmases ago, again at lunchtime, queued at one of only 2 open checkouts, got to the front and the operator said "Oh sorry, It's returns only at this till, you'll need to go to the other till" No signs, it was obvious there was a queue, she could have said something earlier or called to open another till. I forfeited a £1 for the trolley that time. I can't remember if I complained. If I did I didn't get a response.

BlueMongoose · 07/10/2023 20:36

I dumped some (not food) goods on the nearest clothes rail at M&S when I'd been in a queue for 15 mins, only 2 serving, & one of those dealing with what must have been a very complicated return as you could have planned a raid on a bank in the time, some staff at the counter just folding clothes, and the manager just walked through the queue with his nose in the air and did nothing. I had a bus to catch, I had no option.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 07/10/2023 20:36

I saw someone leave his entire shop after it had all been scanned because there were no free bags and he didn't want to pay for 5p ones.

This was a while ago, obviously.

NortieTortie · 07/10/2023 20:36

I have. My son had just started reception so I thought ooh, I'll treat myself and do the shopping with just one toddler. In the queue for the tills, I checked my phone and saw I had a missed call from the school and a voicemail to tell me precious first born had fallen, cracked his head open and they think he needs to go to hospital for stitches 😬. I get my shopping delivered now.

Createausername1970 · 07/10/2023 20:08

He was wanting to make a point.

I haven't done that as such, although I did do something sort of similar. Our local supermarket kept have the fire alarm go off. It was faulty, but of course the couldn't just ignore it. We were turfed outside, but had to leave our trollies inside. After about 15 minutes we were allowed back in. I resumed my shopping, only for the alarm to go off again. Now, these trollies are the ones you have to put £1 coin in to release. I decided I was done with trying to do my shopping, so I plugged my trolley into the nearest one (which was rather full) retrieved my £1 and went home. I did have a slight twinge of regret about the poor person who returned to their full trolley to find mine plugged in. I pictured them finishing their shopping with a second trolley tagging along behind.

How were you able to plug 2 full trollies of shopping together to get your £1 out?

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/10/2023 20:37

@JudgeJ not making excuses, I thought she behaved appallingly but she was clearly unhinged that day so I was trying to be kind. The manager ran out after her and told her she was banned. It was a weird time!

DreamTheMoors · 07/10/2023 20:37

I remember shopping once at a Target store in the U.S. and when we got towards the front of the store we could hear screaming - a woman had her (about 3 yr old) little boy in the trolley seat and he was having a right fit because she wouldn’t buy him a treat.
He was having a complete meltdown, but she stood there, calmly, while he screamed & yelled & cried and the rest of us tried not to stare.
To her credit, she went through the checkout, bought her items and stood at the front of the store while the little boy continued to completely freak out. She never raised her voice or got angry or anything - and that was the most epic temper tantrum I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
I don’t know how she remained so calm.
