Have you ever dumped an entire trolley of food at a till and walked out?

I was in a Lidl store today and a very long queue built up.. and it became apparent that another till was not going to be opened despite the queue getting longer and many of whom had a big trolley load of food. There are no self service tills.

I then saw a man walk to the front and dump his entire shopping on the conveyor belt of an adjacent till and stormed out.

I'm sure if there was more staff this would've been avoided so it wasn't the fault of the person on the till. I know there is pressure on supermarkets to cut costs, but is this now getting to a tipping point in terms of impacting on customer service? Or is it the case that if you go to a so called 'discounter' type shop then you just have to accept that the service levels will be bit lower which allows them to offer lower prices?

Have you ever dumped your shopping at a till and walked out? I thought if the guy wanted to walk out he could, he didn't actually need to go the effort of unloading it all on a belt in a dramatic fashion in front over the worker and then storm out.

Not dumped at the till, no. But I have had to abandon my basket a few times due to panicking/overwhelm.

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/10/2023 20:14

I saw a woman dump a very full trolley during the pandemic because she was angry screens had been put up and she was required to keep a distance and didn't want to. She pushed it hard so it hit another customer and screamed abuse at the cashier. She was very well spoken and drove off in a Range Rover. I think she was probably struggling a bit.

Once, when I was much, much younger (21/22). I had gone for alcohol and a few snacks and the woman on the till refused to serve me because I did not have ID.

I wouldn't have been so annoyed if it was anyone else who refused me. I have worked in bars before, so I know how important ID. I usually had it in my my bag but forgot I'd taken it out the day before to scan into the PC but this woman went to school with me. She knew damn well how old I was. She was being a childish twit because she didn't like me in school.

No. I once realised I didn't have my purse with me at Asda, but they kindly bagged up my shopping and left it for me at customer services to collect when I came back with it.

Did the same for me after I blocked my pin. Realised when I went back I’d been trying to put in my work credit card pin!

Mistressanne · 07/10/2023 20:16

My uncle threatened to.
He had a trolley full of shopping.
The assistant put it through and then he produced some money off coupons, this is 15 years ago at least, the assistant said uncle should have given her the coupons at the beginning. She refused to take them.
My uncle said ‘ I think you’ve forgotten something. I haven’t paid for my shopping yet and I can walk out and leave it. It won’t be me putting it back.’
She took the coupons.

Yes, twenty minutes in a queue in aldi. One till open and nearly to the back, she shop floor assistants wouldn’t open anymore tills. I had a crying baby, I did give the trolley to a member of staff but I wasn’t waiting anymore! Ours thankfully has a self checkout now so you can avoid this sort of thing!

nationallampoons · 07/10/2023 20:20

People who do this out of spite are just pricks. It makes the staffs day harder.

Head office will not get more staff and give more hours just because customers cannot wait.

If you've left your wallet at home that cannot be helped but customers doing it to be a prick should be banned

Homesweethome23 · 07/10/2023 20:20

People leaving their trolleys/baskets is happening a lot in our local Tesco recently. They have just updated to nearly all self service tills with only 3 out of 50 that are cash and only 1 member of staff manning them all.
Queues are down the aisles daily and complaints are being made but nothing seems to be changing.

Prescottdanni123 · 07/10/2023 20:20

I get that sometimes people realize they have forgot their wallet/purse but they normally just sneak out or ask if their shopping can be held somewhere while they go and get money. People who need to pick kids up from school/get to work/have an appointment to go to/urgently need the toilet normally just dash off - I wouldn't have thought people in those situations would have the time to unload all their shopping to make a point to the cashier. So it does sound like it was a flare of temper in this case.

Loubelle70 · 07/10/2023 20:21

Many times. Im a reasonable person but i havent, like other people, got all the time in the world. If theres employees on all the tills at busy times i wouldn't walk out...what can be done? But i have walked out many times when theres long queues and say 2 on the till and im time poor. Also ive walked out twice at same shop because same thing happened twice, waiting in queue ..1 on till...2 others cackling and deep in conversation whilst doing nothing. I haven't the patience for people that wont do their job correctly. I just put full basket down walked out..twice in a week. Same 2 employees too 😁.

At least you didn't accidentally pay for your shop on your work card, which has happened to a couple of people I know! Saved from an embarrassed phone call to arrange to pay it back!

Sehenswürdigkeiten · 07/10/2023 20:22

Not a whole trolley full, but if I have nipped in for a few things that I fancied (and so didn't desperately need) I have put them back and walked out - I make sure to put them back properly though, nothing worse than dumped and wasted food (eg chilled or frozen not returned properly).

Supermarkets prefer customers shopping online, that's why they don't want to pay staff to sit on a checkout. It's terrible customer service.

LIDL don’t do online, do they?

truthhurts23 · 07/10/2023 20:23

it's only men that I see acting entitled like that

Just the normal barrier gates....empty tills have them across

Never seen such a thing at Lidl, though local Tesco have them.

AbbeyGailsParty · 07/10/2023 20:24

Yes, in Tesco. Don’t often shop there and the two tier pricing annoys me. Thought I’d check I still had a Tesco store card, couldn’t find it. Thought fuck it, I’ll go to Aldi and left the trolley.

bonzaitree · 07/10/2023 20:24

Our Lidl are awful. Literally never enough staff on the tills. Sometimes only self service open - even for people with massive trolleys. Always running out of really key things like eggs milk sugar etc.

It’s so crap!

person who dumped their trolley maybe just had a bad day!

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 07/10/2023 20:25

Once, but not in a strop. Small child vomited over the entire trolley load of shopping and was obviously really unwell. I knew I had to get him home asap. I was in a flap and explained to the till person and just grabbed the child and left. Till person said not to worry about the vomity shipping, they would sort it out. Still cringe now 12 years later.

BananaSlug · 07/10/2023 19:59

Not a trolley but basket yes

Yes, I have left baskets many times if they refuse to open tills, I just say "Ill go and see if the competition will open a till then" and walk out, the staff dont care though they just want their shift to be over.

No but my mum once did when my younger autistic brother had an epic meltdown

Exactly this for me as well about 10 years ago when DS was aged 3.

I think we bioth sobbed our way out the store and all the way back home.

DoooooWhoop · 07/10/2023 20:27

Only in M&S... the cashier was extremely rude. I had a £7 off voucher and she refused to type in the code into the machine as too much effort. So I got the pyjamas back out of my shopping bag and threw them across the counter.

He was wanting to make a point.

I haven't done that as such, although I did do something sort of similar. Our local supermarket kept have the fire alarm go off. It was faulty, but of course the couldn't just ignore it. We were turfed outside, but had to leave our trollies inside. After about 15 minutes we were allowed back in. I resumed my shopping, only for the alarm to go off again. Now, these trollies are the ones you have to put £1 coin in to release. I decided I was done with trying to do my shopping, so I plugged my trolley into the nearest one (which was rather full) retrieved my £1 and went home. I did have a slight twinge of regret about the poor person who returned to their full trolley to find mine plugged in. I pictured them finishing their shopping with a second trolley tagging along behind.

'Slight twinge' 😳

Can't believe you did this, such a shitty move

Scaraben · 07/10/2023 20:28

I recently dumped a full trolley at the scan and shop bit in Asda. A big box of nappies wouldn't scan, they were the main thing I needed. I dutifully pressed the button saying "no" when it asked if I'd scanned everything. After an age an assistant came over and took the box away saying she would sort it out, I stood around for ages, she didn't return. It got to 15min before I had to collect my daughter from school a 5min drive away. I collared another assistant who told me I'd just have to pay for what was in my trolley as she had no idea where the other assistant had gone and she couldn't let me leave the trolley to go back and get a new nappy box. I just abandoned the trolley, walked out and did an online order with a different supermarket instead. I use scan and shop to try and be efficient! Was so annoyed. My excuse for flouncing is being 37 weeks pregnant!

SoShallINever · 07/10/2023 20:28

No I would never do that because I've worked in a supermarket and had to put it all back in the shelves and it's soul destroying.

User562377 · 07/10/2023 20:28

I did once in asda when I'd loaded my shopping onto the belt and ds announced he needed a wee. He was only just out of nappies and I panicked , I didn't know whether to abandon my shopping or let him wee all over the floor.
I ran past the person paying in front of me and took him to the toilet. When we got out the person behind and the cashier had bagged up all my shopping for me.
I was planning to just run away, I had no idea what to do. Parenting manuals don't cover these situations.
