Did I do something wrong?

Hi,

I went for a nice walk with my LD this morning, which was abruptly ended when she jumped in the pond. I thought the pond would slowly get deeper but it was a sheer drop so she jumped in and all I saw was her hair.
She was only under for half a second, but I'm still stressing about it now. I gave her milk and showered her after coming straight home.
She seemed fine, and completely normal but I feel like I've failed her that she was put in danger like that.
It didn't help that a random dog walker told me I wasn't fast enough and should have run to get her. (I didn't run because I thought AHH she can have a little paddle and I was behind her anyway).

My question to you folks is did I do something wrong? I feel like avoiding walking anywhere near dangerous stuff like this with her until she's older. She's almost 4 now and I feel like she thought it was shallow too because she just walked into the pond like there was a floor there.

Man kids are stressful 😞

@PandaDad also any symptoms of illness, however mild, in the next fortnight should have you getting her an emergency gp appointment because of the risk of leptospirosis.

But given the state of our waterways at the moment, she should still be on her way to a&e now.

Not a troll then everyone?

Without a doubt. If nothing else the giving milk gave it away.

beetr00 · 07/10/2023 12:56

@itsgettingweird she's 3 years old!!!

"You need to talk to your DD about how to enter water and judging it safely"

So what? Wait until she's 6/7/8? Hope she doesn't do it again thinking it's safe?

You tell a child of 3yo not to just walk into water assuming you know it's depth because otherwise you get incidents like today.

I'm more shocked you wouldn't educate your child to stop them doing it again 😳

A three year old falls into a pond, disappears under the water and the mum thinks, 'sure, I'll just let her have a wee swim'. 😂

I'm here for the deletion message.

What's LD? If it's a child you were very lucky.

Lalallals248 · 07/10/2023 13:11

I don't think you've done something wrong, just don't let her near water in the future.

beetr00 · 07/10/2023 13:12

@itsgettingweird 🙄

beetr00 · 07/10/2023 13:17

@itsgettingweird ah I understand now your viewpoint, you are swim club affiliated, makes more sense in that context.

SM4713 · 07/10/2023 13:33

@itsgettingweird I'm more shocked at those surprised at paddling in October than the accident.

It's not exactly cold in the whole of the U.K.! It's 22° here today. Same temperate we spent days in the summer in a beach etc and the waters warmer this time of year!

How often do you allow a 3yr old to swim- FULLY CLOTHED in a pond??? 🙄

Think it's a dad

CustardySergeant · 07/10/2023 14:12

I can't imagine that your daughter would not have gasped when she fell in the water and you said she was under it, so must have breathed in some water and possibly also ingested some. This is very serious indeed. You must get her checked thoroughly and be very clear about what happened to the doctor so that they are fully aware of all possibilities. This is a very shocking thing to have happened. She's 3 and you should have been holding her hand.

anareen · 07/10/2023 14:14

Has anyone gotten close to solving this riddle? I've hit a wall.

What do you mean?

BakedTattie · 07/10/2023 14:20

I thought LD stood for Labrador 😂

DustyLee123 · 07/10/2023 11:07

It’s wrong to allow her in any water. Even a puddle can be deeper than you think.

This is very true and similar happened to us as happened to you, on a beach. Our speedy little Road Runner who could turn on a sixpence raced towards what looked like a totally harmless smallish puddle and jumped right in. I got the shock of my life. He thought it was great.
I had to have him always in grabbing distance and as a result turned into a bit of a health and safety monitor.

You were there, you did get her out, the horror of what could have happened will take a while to calm down but don't continue to beat yourself up. She's ok!!!

Bearcub101 · 07/10/2023 19:23

Children should NEVER be allowed to go into water, and this shows why! Cold water shock takes hold very quickly, this could have had a worse outcome.

PandaDad · 07/10/2023 11:25

Thanks for the honest replies. I have been very stupid on this occasion and am considerably lucky. Trust me I have learnt from this, but I just wanted to clarify a couple of things. One side of the pond is literally something you can walk in and gradually gets deeper, I wrongly thought both sides were like this. I thought LD meant loving daughter but I think I should have written DD.

I hope that this post and my error can serve as a reminder to parents out there to always be vigilant and keep your kids at arms length. (In this case it was just a little over arms length, which still isn't good enough).

Okay, this still must be a wind up. Have you ever heard of dry drowning? If not, look it up! As for "at arms length", that means far away. You need to keep your DD "close at hand" or better yet, "hang on to her for dear life" when around ANY water.

This had better be a wind-up. Geez Louise.

Colonel Mustard, in the library, with the candlestick.

Since I am hoping this is a game by the OP, that is my answer.

anareen · 08/10/2023 07:47

@Nanaof1

I think this is describing some sort of "physically intimate" ordeal with men and women.

AAahhh...so more like Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet USING a candlestick in the library? 🤔😉
