AIBU to find cyclists annoying

MumOfTheNorth · 07/10/2023 00:11

This probably is unreasonable but I just find cyclists so annoying. Not saying every cyclist does every one of these things. It just seems to happen a lot. Am I the only one that gets this irrational irritation?

What I find annoying...

  • Taking up the whole road so you can't leave enough space to safely over take
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Walking around cafes or the office in sweaty lycra with their click clacky shoes
  • Running red lights when I'm trying to cross on a green man
  • Cycling on the pavement
  • Not tucking in on small country roads once in a while when there's a massive que of traffic behind them
  • Having no lights or helmet on in the dark
  • And most of all... talking to me about cycling

Cyclists are mainly annoying because they are anonymous.

They should have some kind of number plate, making them liable and facing expensive consequences for careless or dangerous riding of their bikes.

Traffic lights do apply to cyclists too for a start, but I could go on.

vivainsomnia · 07/10/2023 13:23

Because some roads are just plain dangerous to be cycling on
it's not the roads themselves that are dangerous but the impatient, entitled drivers who make them so.

i do agree with lack of visibility though. It's irresponsible not to wear good lights.

If you genuinely think a road is full of dickhead drivers who are making it dangerous, why would you cycle on it?

Welcome from 1970! Why are you wasting time on here instead of selling that time machine? Could make you a fortune!

Cyclists and pedestrians HAVE THE RIGHT to use the roads.

MissMillyFluff · 07/10/2023 13:40

Driving down from the supermarket today there was a cyclist in the middle of the road blocking us from getting past. As if that wasn't bad enough, there's a cycle path to the right of where we were, but he obviously wouldn't have annoyed anyone if he'd been on that. 🙄

Having the right to do something doesn't make it safe or a good idea.

Have you ever used the cycle path you mention?

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 13:59

Missmilly, you can get shopping delivered, fewer cars on the road would be lovely

kitsuneghost · 07/10/2023 14:03

It's the making out that they are so fit and healthy while most of them could easily walk instead.
Less than 3 miles? walk your lazy ass.

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 14:16

Its quicker and more fun to cycle

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 14:20

Wereyoulistening, - completely agree for drivers too! Getting people out of their cars is like getting Americans to give up guns, it's their goddam right to bear arms

TheShellBeach · 07/10/2023 14:20

I hate the way they all complain about cars being dangerous, then go through red traffic lights 100% of the time.

fearfuloffluff · 07/10/2023 14:22

Oh God, not this again.

I find it really annoying how cars give children lung disease, how about that?

Cycling on the pavement

As a pedestrian, these drive me insane. Today once again, I would be severely injured or dead if I had crossed on the green man, as a fucker on an electric bike rode right through his red light right in front of me.
I absolutely despise cyclists. Obviously there are good ones, who don't purposely endanger everyone around them - but the bad dangerous rude ones are far more prevalent.

Sigmama · 07/10/2023 14:24

And barely killing anyone, unlike cars

fearfuloffluff · 07/10/2023 14:25

What's the point of this? I find some pedestrians annoying. I find some car drivers annoying. People are annoying.

As a driver you have a duty to behave respectfully and carefully towards other road users, your attitude stinks tbh.

And cycling is fun. Much better to get your heart pumping than sit waggling your feet on pedals feeling like a big deal. I drive and cycle btw. Cycling is preferable.

This would be expensive, unworkable, and contrary to public health. Like the police don't have better things to do than check bike regs.

What would improve cyclist behaviour is way more cyclists, with steady sensible cyclists setting the pace and teaching other cyclists how to behave. Right now there's a high proportion of young men which makes dickheadery more likely.

Single cyclist not so much of an issue. It’s the bunching of the cycle clubs, shouting to each other, don’t care there are people wanting to get past, we are not giving way for anyone, especially cars and pedestrians that annoys me”

This. Why don’t they have to be insured to use the roads?

Cyclists are allowed to go anywhere on the road they want. That wasn't blocking you, it was using the road. Maybe you need some highway code revision, the rules changed last year confirming that cyclists can ride where they choose.

You're supposed to leave a wide space between you and a cyclist. Cyclists often ride in the middle of the lane as a defensive action where there isn't space to overtake. Or there might be potholes, drains, overhanging foliage etc preventing them from riding by the kerb.

Have you ever been on a bike path? Many of them are badly maintained and borderline dangerous. Where they are good, they're used.

JustAnotherMNUserPassing · 07/10/2023 14:34

I only ride on the pavement when it's a shared cycle/pedestrian path but I agree. There are cyclists out there that are a pain in the arse. I find car drivers irritating when they overtake and drive way too close though Angry

They will soon rack enough fines to cover the cost.

Why can they get away with everything? Of course it wouldn't be "contrary to public health", it would be a major improvement.

If you are a sensible cyclist, it won't affect you anyway.

Many cyclists are insured. It's a requirement for cars because they're hulking great metal boxes that can crush people and travel at speed.

I don't think insurance is relevant to bike clubs travelling together? They probably do have insurance though.

The highway code says riding abreast is acceptable but consideration should be given to other road users.

Your post suggests you think the road belongs to cars and cyclists are there on sufferance, it belongs to all road users and driving is a privilege dependent on drivers showing the right behaviour.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2023 14:37

Not sure it’s a privilege when you’re paying to use it and others aren’t. I cycle too. Just, considerately.

It would put people off cycling, when we need more people to cycle because there are too many cars in the roads and cars contribute to obesity, disease and premature death.

You're saying it just because you want to antagonise cyclists.

Who would impose and administer these fines? The police barely come to burglaries, you think they want to stand out spotting teenagers failing to give a hand signal and making them pay a fine out of pocket money?
