Rubbish dumped outside house

BlueSky2023 · 06/10/2023 21:10

Hi.

Someone on my street dumped a black bin bag full of rubbish outside my house a couple of weeks ago, this is the second time in 12months this has happened.
I cannot stand people who dump their rubbish on the streets!
I haven’t moved the bag as if I go near it and people see me they could think it was me who dumped it there but also I don’t want to tidy up someone else’s rubbish, and if whoever dumped it there thinks someone else will tidy their rubbish they may keep doing it. No one else on the street has attempted to move it either.

it is not directly in front of my house by the way, it is a couple of meters to the left of it

They didn’t tie the bag so now there are tins of dog food scattered just beside it , ,seems like it was mainly full of these tins.

What would you do,

AIBU for not removing the bag even though it’s someone else’s rubbish

YANBU, leaving it there might be a sign to whoever left it there that no one is going to tidy their rubbish away for them, as it is clear the person has a dog maybe now as the contents have been exposed some other neighbour might have an idea who it was……….I Don’t own a dog or have any pets so some of the neighbours probably know it wasn’t me, also it must be obvious it wasn’t me as who dumps rubbish in front of their own home.

Personally I would have picked it up because I wouldn't want my street to look a mess, but I can understand why you don't want to in terms of it maybe encouraging them to do it again.

I wouldn't give a hoot if the neighbours thought I'd put it there, they can think what they like (but they also know I'm not a scratter who leaves rubbish strewn outside their own home, or anyone elses)

Dacadactyl · 06/10/2023 21:14

Other option is report it to council as flytipping.

GrandHighPoohbah · 06/10/2023 21:16

The first time I would just pick it up myself but if it happened more often I would report to the council as fly tipping.

NoNoHellaNoNoHellaNoNo · 06/10/2023 21:16

I’d have moved it to a bin, before the rats, foxes, badgers and other assorted wildlife turn up for the dog food remnants, and to stop the street looking crap.

If it keeps happening, I’d report it as flytipping.

catscalledbeanz · 06/10/2023 21:32

Because of ridiculous collection rules this is increasingly common here. I have thrice reported this sort of fly tipping (which is what this is) and the council come to collect it within five days usually.

Spookymormonhelldream · 06/10/2023 21:39

Report it to your council. There's an app called Love Clean Streets where you can report directly.

MumOfTheNorth · 06/10/2023 21:50

I don't think you're being unreasonable to not want to sort out someone else's rubbish but I also don't think the method of not picking it up will work - I imagine whoever dumped it doesn't give it a second thought either way. Annoyingly I'd probably just pick it up to keep street tidy and safe but like others have said I'd photograph and report it to council

BlueSky2023 · 06/10/2023 21:57

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply, I have now reported it as fly tipping so hopefully it will get removed in the next couple of days

It seems almost ridiculous to say this, but my own sister got "caught out" once we don't see eye to eye as she followed my lead and reported "fly tipping". However she'd dumped it and with proof of her address within it Hmmshe got fined and blamed me for advising her to report it -she told me it randomly appeared not that she'd chucked it there

So if you have done it yourself- please don't report it

BlueSky2023 · 07/10/2023 11:39

@catscalledbeanz

Of course I haven’t done it myself, why would I post a thread on MN discussing the situation and querying what to do with it if I had done it myself.

Your sister dosen’t really seem to be the brightest
