To ask if anyone has found anything that works for Reynauds?

startingfromtomorrow · 06/10/2023 14:31

I have horrible Reynauds in my fingers and toes every winter and with the weather getting colder it's going to be back soon.
I have hand warmers and gloves and thick socks etc but hoping someone has come up with a miracle?
So if any fellow Reynauds sufferers have found a way to ease the symptoms I'd gladly hear them.

Just met a Herbal Doctor who said rub cinnamon oil into your hands and soles of your feet every 3 hours.

Lol.

Friend found cold water swimming transformational, I know, counter-intuitive

Wonder whether I was that friend - it definitely helped me (as in helped generally - it still takes hot water to get my hands, working again after a swim).

I've suffered from Raynauds for years, cant go on any medications as i have very low blood pressure already.. Yes to fingerless gloves, although turtle doves types dont help, as i need half fingers iyswim. Without, still doesnt keep my fingers warm enough! 2 layers of socks helps too.
I find avoiding your hands / feet getting too cold or TOO HOT helps, i.e extremes of either temperature, so always wear rubber gloves when doing things like the washing up!

ladyofshertonabbas · 06/10/2023 18:24

Getting older helped (was worst as a teen). Also life being more boring- keeping at a more consistent temperature- once I’d had a painful flare up, it was more likely to recur.
the only thing which helped was keeping warm, sadly, thermals, thick gloves, wrapping up really warm consistently.

Mayhemmumma · 06/10/2023 18:42

My daughters gets worse if she is upset or overwhelmed.

Consultant we saw (it can be really bad) said to keep whole body a steady temperature and not shock the body getting too hot (bath/shower/exercise etc) or too cold too quickly.

I say this on every reynauds thread but cannot recommend turtle doves wrist warmers highly enough, my husband wears them for running and while fingers are not covered and get cold initially, within 10 mins the hands warm up and stay toasty the whole time. Worth a try for sure.

Junipary · 06/10/2023 19:05

I've found mittens are better than gloves for keeping my hands warm - I think it's to do with the fingers all being together. Also trying not to let them get cold in the first place. Last winter I used to warm them in warm water just before leaving the house and they generally kept warm while I was out.

Takeoutyourhen · 06/10/2023 19:05

I cut out caffeine.

Caspianberg · 06/10/2023 19:09

Natural fabrics.
merino thermals all winter to keep core warm. Woolen jumpers.

I actually moved to an even colder country, but bought proper winter clothing and feel much warmer

Moredarkchocolateplease · 06/10/2023 19:10

Haven't rtft. Long term sufferer here.

Mittens not gloves. Gloves make it worse. You need space around the fingers.

Wool socks. I buy mine for 5pairs for. £15 from ebay. Probably shite Chinese wool but they last all winter.

Sheepskin boots in the house.

Keep your thighs warm. I don't get chilblains when my thighs are warm.

IHeartGeneHunt · 06/10/2023 19:11

Hawthorn tea - you can get it in Holland and Barrett.

TigerRag · 06/10/2023 19:15

What socks do people recommend please? I usually wear cotton ones but find my feet (like now) are still cold. I was given some fluffy socks as a Christmas present but my feet sweat and don't really get warm.

Has to be wool. And thick, not stupid female thin ones.

Merino no good for me and my feet were agony in bamboo.

ThatshallotBaby · 06/10/2023 19:19

How do people re warm? I find the best thing is to get somebody to hold my numb fingers in their hand, but that option isn’t always available Grin
Also doesn’t really work for feet. Warm water can be excruciating.

startingfromtomorrow · 06/10/2023 19:20

A couple of people have mentioned caffeine, I drink a lot of coffee but I hadn't considered it could be making it worse.
Perhaps I'll stick to hot chocolate in the winter and see if that helps a bit.

I don’t drink much caffeine, decaf both tea and coffee, annoyingly hasn’t made a difference.

HelpIcantfindaname · 06/10/2023 19:25

GP told DD14 to put her gloves on before she leaves the classroom when her hands are warm, rather than wait until she's outside & they've got cold so she has to try & warm them up. The trouble with this is school don't allow them to wear gloves or coats till they are outside the building.
Her fingers got so sore last winter. I might see if the gp will give her meds.

DonttouchthatLarry · 06/10/2023 19:28

Wrist warmers were a game changer for me.

CrashBangWallow · 06/10/2023 19:31

Heat holders are great socks if you are working/lounging about at home. Too thick to wear with shoes or slippers but really warm.
@ThatshallotBaby if other people aren’t around the best thing might be to put hands into armpits, under clothes if possible.

overmydeadbody · 06/10/2023 19:41

I took up cold water swimming two years ago and haven't suffered with Raynaud's since. Before that it was a nightmare.

I go swimming at least twice a week and, in winter I don't spend longer then 30 seconds submerged up to my neck. That's enough. Feel so warm afterwards. The trick is to get your wet things off really quickly, dry and get warm layers of clothes on once you're finished.

Bonbon21 · 06/10/2023 19:55

Keep your wrists and calves warm.. so fingerless gloves that go right up your arm and legwarmers... yes proper legwarmers... make a HUGE difference and cut out the draughty gaps!!

Azaeleasinbloom · 06/10/2023 19:56

Compression gloves ( fingerless) work well for me. I got mine on Amazon.

Catsandbikes · 06/10/2023 20:23

I've definitely found exercise helps - I'm outdoors much more than when I was younger and it's not quite as bad as it was.
When I'm at my desk - rug on floor, sheepskin slippers.
M&S long sleeved thermal t shirts every day.
Turtle dove wrist warmers
Thermal leggings either on their own or under other bottoms as it gets colder , knee-length or hiking socks. Electric blanket. Leather gloves for driving.
Cashmere beanie
I LOVE that sheepskin steering wheel cover!
