To ask if anyone has found anything that works for Reynauds?

I have horrible Reynauds in my fingers and toes every winter and with the weather getting colder it's going to be back soon.
I have hand warmers and gloves and thick socks etc but hoping someone has come up with a miracle?
So if any fellow Reynauds sufferers have found a way to ease the symptoms I'd gladly hear them.

My Mum used to suffer very badly from Reynauds, she swore by, as a previous poster has said, sheepskin lined gloves, they were the only things that kept her hands warm

NorthernSoul55 · 06/10/2023 16:00

Fingerless gloves.. Turtle Doves cashmere wrist warmers are the best and I wear them all the time when the temperature drops, even indoors. Look on ebay for seconds.
I find mittens better than gloves, especially sheepskin.
Sheepskin boots (ugg style) worn as slippers and pure wool socks in winter.
Don't drive without gloves! Something about holding the steering wheel can set mine off.
Make sure you put everything on before you go outside.

unsync · 06/10/2023 16:06

Ginko Biloba is supposed to help as it has vasodilation properties.

WeightoftheWorld · 06/10/2023 16:18

Sorry to jump on, can anyone recommend any super warm, flexible fingerless gloves suitable for working at a computer? I've always had particularly cold extremities and wore basic fingerless gloves for work indoors during winter etc but I've properly developed Reynaud's recently and it's just not enough. I'm dreading the winter mainly because of work.

semideponent · 06/10/2023 16:19

Regular saunas

mrmagpie · 06/10/2023 16:22

Mine has got worse with age. I find lots of things exacerbate it but the only thing that helps is not getting cold. Drafts even in the wam seem to set it off, even a fan on a warm
day and driving is a trigger, presumably because your hands are held up on the wheel.

Following with interest!

Booforcurtains · 06/10/2023 16:25

Running has really really helped mine - prob too late to start for this season but start in April for next Winter.

Friend found cold water swimming transformational, I know, counter-intuitive

Actually I’ve found a massive improvement with that too. Although it was brutal initially as my feet were so numb I struggled to walk.

SquashPenguin · 06/10/2023 16:44

I used to use nifedipine until I kept fainting on it. I already had low blood pressure so I couldn’t keep using it. I find chilblains even worse than raynaulds, I’ve never found a solution to them.

I found typing in mittens worked best as I could still really move my fingers and lack of movement seems to make them worse.

MirandaWest · 06/10/2023 16:57

I find that keeping my core warm helps. As does putting on gloves (fingerless when working) before I get cold hands - if they get cold then it's a lot harder to get them warm again.

Walking and running outside also really help me.

MirandaWest · 06/10/2023 16:59

I have cashmere fingerless gloves from a company called Turtle doves which seem to help. They don't have fingers but just a hole where all my fingers come out - when I have actual fingers without tips then this can squash my fingers and make them colder.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/10/2023 17:06

Electric gloves and electric socks. They work for my husband. We had to look quite hard to find gloves where the fingers themselves are heated and not just the palms of the hands. These were the ones we chose for him.

cedarwoodsandpinecones · 06/10/2023 17:14

Second heated gloves from Amazon. You charge them up, you do look a bit like a power ranger but it is worth it !
I have these ones-

plus always wear sheepskin boots or UGGs.

MsNorris · 06/10/2023 17:17

I emigrated somewhere hot - bit extreme though! Oddly after 12 years the Raynauds caught up with me and I now suffer again in winter, only my fingers though so I wear fingerless gloves as much as possible.

muddyford · 06/10/2023 17:18

Evening primrose oil sorted mine.

Ididntknowuntiliknew · 06/10/2023 17:18

Wim Hof dedicated a chapter in his book to using the cold to improve the symptoms of Raynaud's. A suggested practice is to submerge the affected area in ice-cold water for increasing periods of time, starting from 30-60 seconds and building up to ten minutes.

I copy/ pasted that. The format is dreadful, but the science behind this is good.

Angrymum22 · 06/10/2023 17:22

Since taking blood pressure tablets my Raynauds has disappeared. One of the drugs is nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker, which is used for Raynauds.

BigPandaLittlePanda · 06/10/2023 17:23

@NorthernSoul55 I also find the steering wheel a trigger and have used one of these for years now. https://www.celticandco.com/home-living/accessories/accessories/steering-wheel-cover It's a bit ££ but, as with all things Reynauds, only real sheepskin will do. And I did get my fingers burnt (or not...😂 ) trying a faux version!

Reynauds can be a symptom of magnesium deficiency, so it's worth trying a magnesium supplement. I need that steering wheel cover!

Redannie118 · 06/10/2023 17:52

I have severe secondary Raynauds due to Systemic Sclerosis and although cold is a huge thing for Raynauds, stress is too, so staying warm often isnt enough.

I take Sildenafil( Viagra) for mine, but the side effects are pretty grim including horrific headaches. Nifipedine has fewer side effects but not as strong.

Keep gloves on you AT ALL TIMES. Supermarkets are awful for cold hands, even in the summer. Silver lined gloves from the arthritis society are great( and can be worn while typing), cashmere wrist warmers and sheepskin mittens.(wear all together if needed)

Theres been a strong link found between menopause and Raynauds, so if yours has suddenly got really bad and you are going through peri or full blown, HRT may help.

This. I know 3 people who have found this.

SkiingIsHeaven · 06/10/2023 18:02

Just met a Herbal Doctor who said rub cinnamon oil into your hands and soles of your feet every 3 hours.

BigPandaLittlePanda · 06/10/2023 18:05

For anyone interested in the steering wheel cover, Celtic & Co have a new customer 15% discount + free postage offer on their website (INTRO23). Looks like there are a couple of similar voucher deals online generally too. Disclaimer: I don't work for this company but I have bought a lot of sheepskin items from them over the years! I'm sure other steering wheel cover brands are available 😁
