A woman is a woman

For those who have been following the Tory conference and general themes of their speeches…

How do you feel about Sunak’s speech?

I know there has been a lot of discussion on here from those who didn’t want to vote for a party that didn’t know the definition of a woman.

Rishi has stated clearly that “a woman is a woman and a man is a man.” While I’d argue that still isn’t a definition, per se, he is appeasing this way of thinking.

So I’m just wondering. Is this enough for you to vote Tory at the next election?

It's a virtual certainty that we've all been in the Ladies at the same time as transwomen and known nothing about it.

Well we can't evidence a negative but there is plenty of evidence for all the women who have known there was a male person in a female space and have felt uncomfortable, scared, harassed and occasionally worse.

Just recently on a thread a woman was talking about having to leave a breastfeeding support group (a real life one not just online) because a male person was let in and the women felt so physically uncomfortable the group could not continue as it was.

This all goes far beyond just toilets.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 09/10/2023 16:00

Ah the mythical TW that totally passes and you just can’t tell

i would not ever challenge a TW in the ladies toilets because you know they’re men!! They may well then leave thinking “yep no one knew” but that’s because they’re male & they’re clueless about the level of socialisation women have to be kind plus not upsetting men has been drummed into us because men tend to get very angry when they’re upset

Because they remained in the toilet cubicle until we left?

Not the 2 I encountered in Oxford, they didn't pass as women at all.

Great hulking men in women's clothes.

Very very few pass.

Who looks that closely at the other women using a busy Ladies? I'm usually preoccupied with whatever I'm doing next and barely register the others there. I certainly don't stop to check whether their boobs are genuine or whether they may or may not have an Adam's apple.

Wish there was a laugh emoji.

You think the adams apple is the only way to tell?

Oh that old 'they've always used our spaces and you didn't know' MYTH.

Since 99% of them don't 'pass', we'd almost certainly know.

None. That's precisely my point.

The myth lies in the claim that it's a myth.

Yes, if we're concentrating on fellow visitors to the Ladies, we probably would know. But the point is that we mostly don't. It's not generally considered good etiquette to make eye contact with strangers or to inspect them, and people are mostly thinking about the meeting, the restaurant, the café, the next shop they're going to, the show they're watching, the train they have to catch, the person they're going to meet, etc etc.

Speak for yourself. I am always looking out for my personal safety and especially in places like toilets where I am vulnerable.

Just the other day I was in a railway station and needed the toilet. I didn't actually use it because a very obvious male in female attire was hanging around outside. I did not feel safe.

There have been other encounters too.

MyJetNowAirlines · 10/10/2023 10:12

No. It’s too little, too late and the rest of the country is so badly destroyed that this won’t move my political needle.

However, I feel incredibly betrayed by labour, their stance on trans and the effect it has on women’s and girl’s rights. They lost my vote at the last election. I was so devastated by the whole thing that I ended up spoiling my ballot. I’ve never done that before and used every opportunity to vote in general and local elections since I turned 18, over 25yrs ago.

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2023 10:12

Making eye contact has absolutely nothing to do with checking and gauging a person's sex.

We are sexually dimorphic mammals; it is absolutely instinctive to do this, for many reasons. For the sex that is more at risk from the other sex, it is more imperative to do so. Which is probably why women are better at quickly assessing sex than men.

We use a number of cues to do so. Size, build, gait, proportions, etc.

A sexually dimorphic species that wasn't accurately able to assess and differentiate sex wouldn't last very long.

It's an untruth. It doesn't happen without us knowing about it. That's the point.

I don't know whether you're a woman but if you were you'd know almost all women make eye contact passing each other in the ladies, and a man can be clocked by a simple side-ways glance. That's why your lie that we 'don't know' is so absurd it's beyond a myth.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/10/2023 11:42

Yep there’s a reason why almost every photo of a TW in the media is them standing alone/with a man rather than next to a woman. It’s because the moment they’re stood next to an actual woman it’s blindingly obvious. Plus of course the filtered to fuck social media photos

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2023 12:23
