Haven't heard back from Job interview

Hi all
So just some advice, I'm aware that I'm impatient but waiting is really so difficult. So I went for a interview on Monday afternoon for a school admin job, I thoroughly hit yeh interview went well ish , I was told they would get Bach to me by end of day Tuesday, but haven't heard anything yet, I did ask 'will you let me know either way?' And was told yes we will. So obviously today is Thursday and still haven't heard anything and the school is closed tomorrow. AIBU to think I have not got this job ? I'm so disappointed.

Could be they're waiting to hear back from someone else first.

Mothership4two · 05/10/2023 15:06

You probably haven't if they said by Tuesday, but you might be their 2nd choice and they are waiting for the 1st choice to accept the job.

CrazyHamsterLady · 05/10/2023 15:06

Absolutely nothing wrong with contacting them. It’s best to know one way or the other. It might be a No or it might be that a member of the panel has unexpectedly gone off sick and they haven’t been able to discuss it. If it’s the second one then at least you’ll know you’re still in the running.

wigywhoo · 05/10/2023 15:11

I work in HR - give them a bit longer, it's not been long- maybe a panel member is ill...

newyear2023newmeihope · 05/10/2023 16:03

I actually did end up calling and was told the lady is busy but they took my details and said she will call because , she didn't so
I called again and was told she's left the office as school is closed for a training event at an external location . So I don't know 🤷‍♀️

Yeah - HR "promises" are worthless, any undertaking they gave you to let you know within a particular timescale is entirely optional on their part.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/10/2023 16:08

If they said they would get back by Tuesday, they might be delaying because you're their second choice.

Spartak · 05/10/2023 16:08

Stop calling them! You don't want to create a bad impression in case the job becomes available again.

Fightyouforthatpie · 05/10/2023 16:08

Looks like you've dodged a bullet not getting the job anyway OP.

girlfriend44 · 05/10/2023 16:09

looks like you havent got it, if they wanted you, they would let you know.

Yeah, how unreasonable, asking for an update several days after they promised one. Has no-one got any decency?

Calling twice within an hour will just come across as needy.

If they want to offer the job, they will be in touch.

DurhamDurham · 05/10/2023 16:19

They won't tell applicants that they're unsuccessful until the person they've offered the job to accepts it. You might be in the running if the first person turns it down.
Or they might re-advertise the post of no one met the criteria at the interview stage.

Fightyouforthatpie · 05/10/2023 16:22

All these enablers - why can't they just be honest about letting OP know in the first place? Or since they agreed to a timescale, stick to it? Is it because job offers have magical properties? It would be decent to do as they agreed and let OP know, wouldn't it?

ColdEvenings · 05/10/2023 16:25

You haven't got the job, be grateful as they would be a shite employer to work for.

I've been for some really senior positions and haven't heard back! So so rude.

newyear2023newmeihope · 05/10/2023 16:41

@Spartak I didn't call twice in an hour.
@Fightyouforthatpie exactly what I think , it's so annoying the waiting is hard🤣 but yes I do think now that I haven't got the job, and yes to those saying I dodged a billet , I'm beginning to think the same.

I think it’s inexcusable to invite people for interview, tell them you’ll inform them of the outcome within a time frame and then fail to do so.

It’s rude and dismissive. It would certainly put me off the workplace, even if the job was offered.

newyear2023newmeihope · 05/10/2023 17:17

@Bluevelvetsofa I totally agree with you it's just common courtesy. Obviously I've taken time off work for this the least they should do is just get back to me within the time frame they said, either way. Very annoying.

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves I did think this but ppl don't normally take that long to accept or decline do they?

@wigywhoo maybe but I was the last interview abs the last one of the day ,so would have expected them to discuss it. I don't know .

Agreed.

myjohnnywasasaint · 05/10/2023 17:36

I agree with PP, they've offered it to someone and you're likely in 2nd place.

They're waiting to see if their 1st choice accepts. If it's taking them a few days they might be negotiating salary or something.

We tell people that they'll hear from us the following week.

newyear2023newmeihope · 05/10/2023 17:45

@myjohnnywasasaint yes maybe you're right. However as far as I knew Salary was non negotiable as it's in a banding system. I must say I am disappointed as this would have been a great job for me. I'm going to assume I didn't get it as it's probably going to stress me out over the weekend.
