Hi all had to sign onto UC first time on benefits. Got a doctor's note saying I was unfit for work. They have sent me a "work capability assessment". I have no idea what to do or how to fill it out. I'm so ashamed. Have held it together for a while but recent nervous breakdown and sucicide attempt. I feel like an utter failure in life and as a parent. Got learning difficulty and other stuff . Do you know any sites I can can get help Im so scared of being sanctioned . 😭. Took me half hour to type. A form is so overwhelming. Plz move in wrong place.

I work in the welfare sector, happy to help if I can. Is there a specific question you're struggling with or just overwhelmed by the length of the form?

Would be worth finding out whether your local Citizens Advice office have anyone who could sit with you to go through it.

It's the whole thing. J have physical stuff. But mainky mental health. I got told CAb aren't good for the medical side. I'm based in east Sussex.. I saw a site but it asked me to pay?

Have a look at A1 benefits on Facebook, they have guides and people around to ask, it's free. Alternative is Benefits and Work which is a yearly subscription but hugely helpful and a lot cheaper than the one mentioned above .

Bashatreetkids · 04/10/2023 20:28

Thanks. I'm wary about stuff asking to pay. As don't want to be scammed on top of everything else x

Do not ever pay for benefits advice.

East Sussex CAB should be able to help you complete the form even if they can't advise on medical issues. If they can't, they will know who can.

I'll ask around tomorrow if anyone knows of any specific organisations in East Sussex.

Please contact your local citizens advice, you can find them by putting your postcode in here:

Most local offices will have people who can fill in the form with you, they will be trained on how to do it and can get a supervisor or benefits specialist to check it, too.

It's helpful if you've got medical evidence but if you haven't, dont worry. You could ask the receptionist at your GP for a copy of your patient summary record - they won't charge you for it.

What's your deadline for returning the form? It's straightforward to get an extension if you need one - but do contact citizens advice as soon as you can, because there may well be a wait for an appointment.

If you're confused about IS and tax credits they can advise you about those too.
