A time you’ve got in trouble at work which was incredibly justified

I was just thinking about the time when I started a new job in 2020. It was office based and we’d always have the radio playing in the background whilst working.

We’d listen to Heart, KISS or Capital FM and these stations would ALWAYS have some sort of competition going on. ‘Text us if you hear X song to win 30 grand,’ those sorts of competitions. Whenever I’d hear the specific song, I’d pick up my work phone and text the number in hope to win.

I was doing this daily for about 3/4 weeks when I received an email from someone relatively high up in the company. They’d sent me a spreadsheet of everytime I texted this number and how much each text cost. I racked up £98.56 or some nonsense like that😅

Luckily I only received a warning and was told not to do this again. They also highlighted that my work phone was to be used for WORK purposes only. Unofficially, my manager told me that the only reason I had kept my job is because I was ‘bloody good at it’ and reminded me to not be so stupid again.

Have you ever got in trouble for something at work and you totally deserved the bollocking?

Emailed a spreadsheet with the salaries of everyone in the department to...everyone in the department.

😫did you get in a lot of trouble? I’m guessing that was considered a GDPR breach?

After being assured for months that we were closed on New Year's Day I was told by my (retail) branch manager that not only was the shop open but I was in charge. At midday on 31/12. I was sooooo pissed off.

All the staff had made plans for NYE so we were all massively hungover and incredibly angry the next day. I closed the shop an hour early and sent everyone home.

Area manager gave me a massive bollocking the next day (he was my brother in law and had been out with me on NYE, he fucking knew how shittily we'd been treated by the manager, but that still fucking stung).

Was you my boss Grin

Ha ha, no - it was someone at the same level as me doing the transfer!

Princesspollyyy · 04/10/2023 20:13

I used to work in a large call centre. One day it was my job to sort through this massive pile of business customer bills and send them out.

Basically I couldn't be bothered. I put them under my desk and forgot about them. About a month later, I was pulled into the office and got the biggest bollocking I've ever had in my life. My colleague who sits next to me grassed me up to the manager, instead of just asking me about it.

I left soon after that.

feelingalittlehorse · 04/10/2023 20:17

Left the club at 6.45am. Started work at 8am.
Vomited at about 10am, just as manager walked around the corner. Tried to pass it off as food poisoning. Except the offending sick was neon blue- due to the blue lagoon pitchers I’d been enjoying all too recently. And I still had a full face of make up on. With glitter.
I dunno if she’s Mystic Meg or what, but funnily enough saw straight through that excuse….

Some of these are funny stupid stunts that really don’t affect the job and managers need to chill, but this is just being a proper bad employee. At least you left and hopefully went onto a job you enjoyed!

I was a babysitter when I was 15 looking after 4 boys between 3 and 9 who were loud, hyper and exhausting.
I got told off by the parents for 'disrespecting their house and defacing property' after I coloured in a few of the Wallys in their big Where's Wally books. Just like making his white jumper stripes green or his blue jeans black.

The parents were angry that I ruined the books and broke the trust of their children. I'd do it again though, kept them busy for ages.

transformandriseup · 04/10/2023 20:21

I once had an office job which had periods where we we dead quiet and I spent most of my day just on the internet which was allowed but I would read a lot of erotic fiction. One time I got a bit over confident and just left my computer as it was to go to the loo and when I came back the IT team were looking at my computer for a completely unrelated reason but they were sat at my desk reading everything on the screen in amazement. I never got in trouble but the shame was bad enough.

This reminds me of when my younger brother (6ft, relevant) used to work at a really quiet rural pub during the weeknights while he was back from uni. He used to get really bored so found ways to entertain himself. The owners kept all the family coats in the cupboard behind the bar so when he was bored he would put the coats on a take selfies for the family chat. One night he came home and said he'd been asked not to go back because the owner came back and found him squeezed into the 6 year old daughters coat like a complete perv 🤣🙈 Still makes me laugh now.

Long time ago, in my early 20s, I went to work straight from clubbing. I thought I would pass as sober. Turned out I was wrong Grin

Yes I did that as a student nurse….back in the 80s!!

I was newish at a company and had asked how we booked annual leave. I was told just check with your counterpart to make sure they were going to be there.
I did that then sent an email to manager and other relevant people when I’d be away on vacation.
went on vacation, come home to a disciplinary. no one knew where I was apparently.
I was supposed to have told HR and filled out a request. Whoops!
I replied by letter explaining the process I’d been told and who knew about it.
turned out ok in the end, genuine error and lack of comms

Phew glad all went well but it's not really lack of comms, they were just being nice 😅 You have to tell HR and fill in a request at every company, it's standard procedure

I worked as a waitress in a pub. Quite often the landlord and landlady would stay out of the kitchen, only popping down occasionally. When we had excess chips that couldn’t swiftly be used for another order we’d put them in a bowl in the kitchen and all eat a few. Over time this turned into us frying ourselves chips. Then it grew and grew until one day the landlord came in to be faced with a large veg serving bowl of not only chips but scampi, whitebait, chicken nuggets and breaded mushrooms.

Quite rightly me and the chef got an absolute bollocking not only for - essentially - stealing but also eating on the job!

This made me actually laugh out loud.

boozeclues · 04/10/2023 20:30

I worked in chain family clothing store, the top floor was very unattractive woman’s underwear and pjs.

NOBODY ever came up, so on the back of a till roll we started a never ending story, and each lonely person on a shift up there would add a new chapter, nothing rude or offensive.

We did however start to ignore our ONLY customer who would come up, browse and go into the changing rooms. Turns out they wasn’t a customer they was a shop
lifter and clocked on to our ignorance and stole thousands of clothes, one changing room was just full of empty hangers.

we was all thoroughly told off by management, but since it was all of us we all kept our jobs 😁

cptartapp · 04/10/2023 20:36

My friend and I had a Saturday job in a shoe shop whilst we were at college. We had a shoe stretcher machine to use when potential buys were a little tight for the customer, but it was a real faff to use.
I frequently crammed my size 8's into a pair instead and stomped round the storeroom for a few minutes rather than mess with the machine.
Until caught by the boss.

I went to an all night party/rave in a field miles from any where, had a row with my bf, and had to hitch home with another friend (male) it took all night. Got home about 9.00. Had to be in work to bottle up at 10.00. Was working the lunchtime and evening shift. At the end of the night Fat Frank told me there was a steak dinner for me upstairs , oh , and my cards ! Which was how they sacked you in those days. I was so blumming tired I could hardly finish the steak which was a shame as it was a damn good steak house even though FF was a gropey old bugger - only kept in check because lovely Mrs FF had the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a bat. I realised after this that bar work wasn’t ever going to be my forte.

Emailed a spreadsheet with the salaries of everyone in the department to...everyone in the department.

The CFO of the international company I worked for emailed a spreadsheet of everyone's salary details to the whole company in error.

He tried to recall it as soon as he realised.

Same.

Been out with work colleagues the Friday night and rolled up on Saturday up to work rotten stinking drunk on about 2 hours sleep and got hauled in front of the manager.

About 3 of us turned up late all in the same state. Good times.

I have ADHD so go through periods of zero output. I’ve sat on work for months and then have anxiety about how I own up to not having met the deadline.

My boss doesn’t know about my ADHD so he gets frustrated sometimes, which I totally deserve, as I’m paid quite a bit and can spend a whole day not having done a thing.

ProfessionalCornflake · 04/10/2023 20:57

I used to do a Saturday job at a music shop. One day me and a colleague decided to play the 'Chocolate Salty Balls' song from South Park over and over. In our defence we were 17, stupid, and the song had just come out. Manager was not happy! Definitely a warranted (salty) bollocking Grin

Mine has been discovered through the joys of a project of how to make a team cohesive and productive. Everyone had to map each other out on strengths and weaknesses. My chaotic disordered methods and mindset were laid bare by my own management team (of which I am the most senior). Luckily I have some strengths and my colleagues compliment my weaknesses 😭

Call centre work where I was dealing with the occasional distraught OAP (who I was always incredibly nice and helpful to, even though it totally fucked up my ratios) and then 98% people screaming and ranting about what an absolute con Travel Insurance was because it didn't cover a £30 suitcase from Argos being replaced together with £5000 worth of designer clothing and no receipts, three grands' worth of camera equipment, 4oz gold chains and diamond rings (all unreceipted) being left under towels whilst they went off swimming for three hours or for a Louis Vitton (sic) suitcase set with not one scrap of evidence they'd ever owned even a purse from the market going missing. Oh, and there was a backlog of approximately 5 months because they wouldn't employ enough handling staff (but had nine directors all on over £45k - at the time, you could buy a three bedroom terrace for £43k).

I must have been on my 38th ranting and shouting call of the morning and there was a group including the most laddish of the directors standing right beside me, all laughing and braying about whatever sports thing they'd seen at the weekend (including all the lines they'd done). The person on the phone was getting angrier and angrier with me, I couldn't hear them properly, then the shit about some women they'd met at the weekend started.

I politely put the angry caller on hold for me to 'speak to a manager' as they were demanding, spun my seat round and bellowed at them 'YOU TAKE THE FUCKING CALL' and stormed out.

I wasn't fired, much to my surprise - they sent a middle manager out to retrieve me from the fire escape steps with a 'You probably shouldn't have sworn at them, they're not happy about it'. But I was bloody good at the job and the volume of work I could get through whilst training all apprentices meant they needed me to stay.

No fucker ever had a social conversation next to my desk ever again, though.

Why does someone always have to try and mess up a lighthearted fun thread with comments like this.
If you need to talk about your situation then start a thread or see a therapist. But why comment on something which clearly doesn’t relate to you when it is meant to be lighthearted?

OP’s thread title was quite confusing, I also thought at first she was asking if people had got into trouble for doing something they were ‘incredibly justified’ in doing.

Ilovenicnacs · 04/10/2023 21:04

I used to work in a soft play place and my manager pulled me into the office because we had no customers the last few hours of my shift but I clocked out really late. I tried to make out it had been very messy and I was tidying lots but she had seen me on the CCTV playing in the soft play with my colleagues.
