A time you’ve got in trouble at work which was incredibly justified

I was just thinking about the time when I started a new job in 2020. It was office based and we’d always have the radio playing in the background whilst working.

We’d listen to Heart, KISS or Capital FM and these stations would ALWAYS have some sort of competition going on. ‘Text us if you hear X song to win 30 grand,’ those sorts of competitions. Whenever I’d hear the specific song, I’d pick up my work phone and text the number in hope to win.

I was doing this daily for about 3/4 weeks when I received an email from someone relatively high up in the company. They’d sent me a spreadsheet of everytime I texted this number and how much each text cost. I racked up £98.56 or some nonsense like that😅

Luckily I only received a warning and was told not to do this again. They also highlighted that my work phone was to be used for WORK purposes only. Unofficially, my manager told me that the only reason I had kept my job is because I was ‘bloody good at it’ and reminded me to not be so stupid again.

Have you ever got in trouble for something at work and you totally deserved the bollocking?

I mailed a £15k check to the wrong company. The letter had details of agreement we had, how much else they were due to get and other stuff we were just giving them
I was slagging off a much higher up on teams but my friend was in a meeting with her and sharing screen to the whole room.
When I was working in a supermarket around 18 years old I was on checkout and while very hungover was sick in a bin in front of customers 😂
Same job I spoiled £400 worth of fish and meat but it wasn't even out of date, I had the wrong month
Got told off by IT for using dirty words on a password and they told my manager.

coxesorangepippin · 04/10/2023 17:53

Used to work in b and q

Often used to take over 100k per day

I left one of the till boxes on the side whilst I popped to the loo

Cue written warning

Boss said there was around 20 grand in that till

I just didn't give a shit

PinkMoscatoLover · 04/10/2023 17:57

Getting caught Emailing all day with this guy at work I was secretly shagging who was a manager (we were hauled in front of the main boss with reams and reams of our often explicit emails printed out)

@janicegarvey oh stop it you’re fucking lying😭😭😭what the hell happened??!

@Panda89 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@Edwardandtubbs phew okay good that doesn’t sound too bad albeit very awkward.

@Thewizardbinbag I just turned 21 so old enough to know better! I don’t even think I realised it was going to constantly charge the company after every single text. I just wanted to win!

I miss working on magazines when you could come in the day after events, parties, etc, still shitfaced and no one batted an eye. I used to come in to show face, then go downstairs to the Mexican place, get an extra spicy burrito and take it to the sick bay and have a nice lie down under a blanket, dozing with the burrito right by my face so I could sleep nibble. Then come back to my desk around midday, refreshed, work until 1pm, then take my lunch break. Quite often there’d be a hair of the dog Prosecco opportunity around 3pm for someone’s birthday/work anniversary/leaving do.

Times I’ve been in trouble: calling a colleague “milquetoast” and saying another had an Oedipus complex; different jobs. Both times I only got in trouble once they’d googled it, so really I blame the internet. Also both accusations were true.

The 'sleep nibbling' made me laugh! Had a similar job early 90s, those were the days when it was fun to go to work.

Pre mobile phone days. My boss was a very wise owl. One unnamed member of staff was making a lot of personal phone calls. (The odd one would pass unnoticed but this was excessive). Instead of calling the culprit in, he simply sent out a memo saying that someone was making a large number of unauthorised calls. After this personal calls dwindled to nothing as no one knew if it was them under suspicion. Result!

Readingineading · 04/10/2023 18:02

Reading a thread on the BBC Parenting message board ( yes, Im old !). I became so engrossed that I missed a meeting with my manager who came to find me - busted !!
In my slight mitigation the same manager would do her supermarket online shop every thursday afternoon during admin time. 🤷‍♀️

Oh God, oh God, the time I was leaving a voicemail for a client at the same time as trying to make my stupid computer work and the client called my boss and played the message of me being charming and polite and professional, then there’s a pause and then “oh go FUCK yourself!”

client was not amused. And I’m still cringing 10 years later.

No I'm not honestly I shit you not

I still remember the cringe 😬

I was a fucking terrible employee

SherbetLemonn · 04/10/2023 18:10

I once got pulled up by The Big Boss for being awol one afternoon. He’d come on site without letting me know he was coming, and then couldn’t find me anywhere and was convinced I wasn’t on site. I was… but I was shagging the manager in one of the upstairs storerooms 🙊 difficult one to wriggle out of!
A very long time ago now!

Obviousname6383 · 04/10/2023 18:17

I went abroad without filling out the proper declaration paperwork. I just completely forgot. I have a security status that means I have to give up a bit of privacy. Got quite the lecture from my security officer when I came back to the office from my very benign holiday.

PinkRiceKrispies · 04/10/2023 18:20

Bitching about the company when outside work and someone who (I assume) was another mutual colleague reported me and the other lady. Oops.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 04/10/2023 18:22

When I was 16/17, a group of us decided it would be funny to change our manager's till code, so when she came back from holiday should couldn't log in to the till. One of the other girls did it - not me.

A few days before she came back, I changed it back to her original code.

Months later, after doing an audit or some shit, someone noticed what had happened, and as I was the only person on shift when it was changed and changed back, I got sole blame.

Got so badly bollocksed that I ended up leaving!

No one else got in trouble at all.

PinkMoscatoLover · 04/10/2023 18:23

@janicegarvey I bet you’re happy that you’re self employed now so don’t have to worry about any unprofessional fuck ups with other members of the team😂

@SherbetLemonn hahahaha oh my God. Love it

Don’t think he ever got busted for it but it’s too good not to share. A guy I know used to be a self proclaimed ‘phone bastard’ working for ntl or similar trying to get money out of those who defaulted on payment. Pre mobile days. These were sometimes people who had expensive porn subscriptions but said they couldn’t possibly be cut off as they need contact with elderly relatives. He copped a lot of verbal abuse but got his own back as he had customers card details so bought sex toys or made donations to charity on their behalf. For the record I’ve no idea if any of this is true but suspect and hope it is!

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 04/10/2023 18:25

Never got in trouble for any of the shit I should have 🤣

Being on FB and Discord whilst making calls mostly 🤣

PinkMoscatoLover · 04/10/2023 18:27

These are fucking great😂 keep em coming guys!

Another one from me, when I was 19 I was an assistant store manager for a big retail company. When it was a slow day, I’d close the store early, get a member of staff to get some snacks from Tesco and we’d sit down in the office wasting time talking. I’d also pay us until whatever time we left.

One day an area manager from outside of London (God knows what she was doing in NW) walked past the store and saw it was closed. She called my area manager to inform he. He decided to check the camera and surprise surprise, the cameras had ratted me out. Luckily I was only given a verbal warning and told not to do it again. He also told me that the only reason why I wasn’t given a disciplinary is because I’d implemented a lot of changes in the store and made a lot of money vs last year figures.

I promise I’m much more behaved in my role now😂 that’s probably because I have 2 children so can’t afford to lose my job!

I populated data, checked it, approved a proof, and only when the printed product arrived, did I realise I'd fucked it up.

£40,000 on a product that retailed for £1.50.

And we missed a product launch because it couldn't be reprinted in time.

That was not a pleasant conversation.

OnlyFannys · 04/10/2023 18:31

I haven't but there are a few times I should have! When I was at uni I worked at a phone shop and we got extra commission for selling insurance with it so I lied and said you had to take insurance and cancel within 7 days if you didn't want it. In another job at a clothes shop we had a national competition to see who could sell the most store cards so I gave myself an 'edge' by saying if they took a store card there was a 10% discount on purchases that day (I put it through as student discount). Both jobs I got away with it buy I absolutely should have been sacked

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 04/10/2023 18:31

I've been in trouble unfairly when I have done nothing wrong, and also dodged the bullet a few times when I have made a mistake - I see the two as cancelling each other out.

Redwinestillfine · 04/10/2023 18:34

Waitressing got caught on the CCTV snogging one of the waiters....the manager came to tell us we were spotted and to concentrate on polishing the silver wear or whatever we should have been doing... We were both very young in our defence.....

QuestionableMouse · 04/10/2023 18:37

Mine was very much worth it from my side of things...

Working at McDonald's on the dining area, alone, during the Christmas rush (back before covid when places got rammed!). Absolutely run off my feet keeping the place tidy. Newish salaried manager kept picking fault with everything I did (including asking me why I wasn't mopping the floor as I was filling the mop bucket) ^^

Got so fed up of it over two or three shifts that after she'd had yet another go at me for something stupid (I think it was for not clearing a dirty table while I was sorting a spill out) that I asked her, loudly and clearly, why she was such a fucking nasty bitch in front of multiple customers.

Very nearly got sacked for that one but in my defense - she was a fucking nasty bitch and was until the day she left.

Minikievs · 04/10/2023 18:38

I was working out on site at a clients, and the head office manager was a complete bitch. I went out for lunch with a friend who worked nearby and when we headed back to work, I stood in the doorway of the clients to finish my ciggie as it was raining.
I was PROPERLY slagging the client off, really badly, then as my friend went to leave I opened the door to go back in and the head bitch practically fell through it as she'd been pressed up against the other side of it listening to me slagging her off. She reported me to my work and I got absolutely bollocked.

Also got in trouble for watching the London Olympics on my phone all day instead of working.

gggrrrargh · 04/10/2023 18:41

I worked for a market research company whilst at uni. Had to ask ridiculous questions like ‘which of these dog food brands understand that special bond you have with your dog’. I couldn’t bring myself to say them so would miss out all the ridiculous questions and make up an answer.

I wasn’t actually ever spoken to about it but I knew the calls were recorded and if they had I would have said ‘hands up caught me I’m off’.
