To ask when kids stop calling you Mummy and Daddy and say Mum and Dad?

My DS is 7, 8 in January. We are very much still Mummy and Daddy. I love being Mummy because in so many ways he is growing up and I’m really noticing it all the more how mature and independent he is becoming since he started the juniors. But I notice that his friends say Mum and Dad, as do my friends kids, some of which are younger.

I remember my Dad not wanting me to stop calling him Daddy (he was a single Dad) and I got to an age (maybe around 7 or 8) where I felt embarrassed by it and I remember other kids making fun of me for it too until he eventually relented!

Maybe kids aren’t as mean as they were in the 90s but I just have been wondering. I asked DS if he wanted to call us Mum and Dad and if he did that was fine but he said he doesn’t want to.

What she did yours start saying Mum and Dad?

Around 10 or so for all my three , later in their teens it became mother

purpleme12 · 03/10/2023 23:45

Mine is 10 and still calls me mummy.
I have noticed in a text to her friend she called me mum though!!

WandaWonder · 03/10/2023 23:46

Depends on if my teenager wants something or not, seriously though not sure really

Flickersy · 03/10/2023 23:46

I have a friend in his 30s who still uses mummy and daddy.

So I'd say there's no set rule.

HerbalBovril · 03/10/2023 23:47

Oh that’s an interesting question. Growing up, we were forbidden from calling our parents Mummy and Daddy. It had to be Mum and Dad.

My eldest is 10 and mostly calls us Mum and Dad now, but not exclusively. The youngest is 7 and still calls us Mummy and Daddy. She actually usually calls me Mumma, which I must admit I find adorable. X

larlypops · 03/10/2023 23:47

Mine will say “you’re the best mummy” but I always get called mum now, youngest is 9 but don’t remember when they stopped

Doyoumind · 03/10/2023 23:48

When they start secondary if they haven't already stopped.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 03/10/2023 23:49

Mine are 19 and almost 17. They still call me Mummy.

High school

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 03/10/2023 23:50

Our boys are 29 and 33 they still call us (when it occasionally comes up) mummy and daddy. They have never referred to us as mum and dad.
I called my own parents mum and dad for many, many years until I jokingly referred to my mother as mummy and she was sooooo delighted I continued to do so. ☺️

Ah yes DS’s catchphrase to me is “love you z mummy, best Mummy ever” which admittedly wouldn’t be anywhere near as cute if it was “Mum” instead!

My 12 year old stopped a couple of years ago. But my 14 year old still calls me mummy when she forgets to be cool. 😍

Greengrassohla · 03/10/2023 23:53

15 = mummy at home, mum at school.

UsingChangeofName · 03/10/2023 23:55

AM REALLY surprised by these answers.
I was going to say around about 6 yrs, or even maybe from when they start school, so maybe 5.

Except when teens are putting it on to try to sweeten you for something, I can't remember any child referring to their Mum as "Mummy" past about 6 yrs of age, and I've known a LOT of dc, both through work and volunteering as well as my own dc, friends dc, dcs' friends etc.

MuckyPlucky · 03/10/2023 23:55

DS almost 13, pretty streetwise & “cool”….still calls me mummy 🥰

Saschka · 03/10/2023 23:55

Mine has reverted to Mama recently! Well, Mumma really. Fuck knows why. He’s 6. Used Mummy for about two years but has now gone backwards 🤷‍♀️

PandaExpress · 04/10/2023 00:00

Age 10 for my kids, that seems to be the age. Although DD still calls us mummy and daddy sometimes when it's just us, but not in public or to friends. Sometimes I refer to DH as daddy to teenage DS and he will correct me! When they are really hurt or upset a 'mummy' will still slip in. It's quite sad really, I like being called mummy. But there would come an age when 'mummy' coming from a grown up son, would start to sound like the 'Bitty' character in Little Britain. I don't think I could have married or dated a man who called him mother 'mummy' 😆

Millybob · 04/10/2023 00:04

I agree, Something deeply off-putting about a grown man and his Mummy.

Jumpingthruhoops · 04/10/2023 00:06

Called my dad 'Daddy' until the day he died (I was 25).

Peakypolly · 04/10/2023 00:08

Still use Mummy for my parent.

neilyoungismyhero · 04/10/2023 00:09

King Charles then POW called his mother Mummy in a speech, he sounded a bit of a twerp.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 04/10/2023 00:14

Mine are 14 and 10. Mummy and daddy to our faces. Mum and dad if referring to us with others. Unless they want something and I’m not giving in, when I’m muhhhhhhhhhh. I don’t like that one!

YourSpleenIsDamp · 04/10/2023 00:15

DS15 and DS12 both still call me mummy, sometimes mumma, occasionally bruv 😆 In front of their friends I'm mum, though, or they both refer to me as "my mum".

CraftyPance · 04/10/2023 00:16

6 or 7

VivienneDelacroix · 04/10/2023 00:19

Two teens and a 9 year old, they all call me Mama. I think they say "mum" to their friends.
