To ask when kids stop calling you Mummy and Daddy and say Mum and Dad?

My DS is 7, 8 in January. We are very much still Mummy and Daddy. I love being Mummy because in so many ways he is growing up and I’m really noticing it all the more how mature and independent he is becoming since he started the juniors. But I notice that his friends say Mum and Dad, as do my friends kids, some of which are younger.

I remember my Dad not wanting me to stop calling him Daddy (he was a single Dad) and I got to an age (maybe around 7 or 8) where I felt embarrassed by it and I remember other kids making fun of me for it too until he eventually relented!

Maybe kids aren’t as mean as they were in the 90s but I just have been wondering. I asked DS if he wanted to call us Mum and Dad and if he did that was fine but he said he doesn’t want to.

What she did yours start saying Mum and Dad?

My eldest still calls me mummy, she’s 21! Youngest swapped to mum at around 10.

12 year old niece says mummy and daddy at home, mum and dad out and about or with friend. In parts of Ireland it's normal to say mammy and daddy all the way into adulthood! It's lovely in my opinion.

My DD is 7. She calls me Bro.

Clemally · 05/10/2023 19:13

Mine switch between Mum/Mummy, the youngest makes up silly names for us, I still call my parents Mummy & Daddy.

ladykale · 05/10/2023 19:13

I still say mummy and daddy as a grown adult...

Dartsplayer · 05/10/2023 19:15

I think he promoted me to bruh at about age 10 or 11 🤣

WimpoleHat · 05/10/2023 19:16

My 14 year old still calls me “mummy” (although would say “my mum” to her friends). 11 year old made a definite decision to switch to mum and dad. I don’t like it 🤣

My DH and his siblings (ranging in age from late 40’s to mid 50’s) still refer to their parents as mummy and daddy.

me eldest DD has never called me mum, (she’s 23 now), it was always mummy until she was mid teens when she switched to calling me a nickname version.

youngest DD is almost 16, always mummy until a couple of years ago when she too started with a different nickname.

both call DH daddy or a nickname they made up.

I still say mummy and daddy (only to them) and I'm in my 30s and not posh. I could never stop now - it's their names! I remember as a young teen trying other things out and my mum didn't want to switch and it became a bit of a joke that I'd only say alternatives if I was in a bad mood with her, so now I could never - it would feel mean. Can't understand why grown adults would willingly bully a child out of calling their parents by the names that they know and comfort them if the child doesn't want to switch.

My husband is 45 and I can't recall him ever calling his mother 'Mum' - always been 'Mummy'

SD1978 · 05/10/2023 19:26

Have never been called this, only mum and dad.

Runnerduck34 · 05/10/2023 19:45

From memory my 4 DC started to say mum rather than mummy from around age of 10

searchinglookingforlove · 05/10/2023 19:49

My 14yo and 11yo still call me mummy or mamma, though I know I'm "mum" when they are with their friends.
Im waiting for the 14yo to stop. And will be incredibly sad when he does 😢

spinspinsugar55 · 05/10/2023 19:50

I have 10 year old twins, one calls me mum and the other (younger by 1 minute 😁) still calls me mummy 🤗
My 23 year old calls me mumma when she misses me or spispinsugar when not so much 😂

StillWantingADog · 05/10/2023 19:52

Mine are 10 and 8 and we are most def mummy and daddy but I notice that when talking to their friends about us, they refer to mum and dad.

I don’t actually remember calling my parents anything other than Mam and dad but I’m sure I did.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 05/10/2023 19:55

22 year old DD calls me Mummy
19 year old DD calls me Mother
12 year old DS calls me Mum.

all have made their own choice

i called mine Mummy until she died last year. I was 55. It’s not usual though I admit.

StrongandNorthern · 05/10/2023 19:59

I find 'grown adults' still using Mummy and Daddy pretty weird.
I know ppl who do this (40/50 +) and I tend to simply avoid them.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 05/10/2023 20:03

I never knew that what I chose to call my mother would cause people to avoid me. Well that’s me told.

UsefulSmartPrettyHappy · 05/10/2023 20:05

Age 7 here. Completely ds's choice.

Vitriolinsanity · 05/10/2023 20:11

I've segued into Mumma. Which is what I call my own DM.

NameChange30 · 05/10/2023 20:12

DS is 6 and he's been calling me "Mum" for a while now. He does still say Mummy occasionally but it's mostly Mum.

DD is 3 and she sometimes calls me "Mum" too 😭 She's clearly copying her brother! She does still say Mummy a lot, though.

When they fight over me, I'm Mummy: "My Mummy!", "MY Mummy!", "No, MY Mummy!", "MY MUMMY!"
Makes me want to resign the position and run away...

Vitriolinsanity · 05/10/2023 20:13

I called my dad Daddy until the moment he died. Why would anyone actually care or comment on what I called him, except him?

NameChange30 · 05/10/2023 20:14

Oh and DH is Papa (he's not English) but interestingly when they talk about him to other people they say "my Daddy" and not "my Papa".

Leftlegwest · 05/10/2023 20:14

7, 5 and 3 year old - all call me mummy. The 3 year old has trialled 'mum' but not the others.
