To ask when kids stop calling you Mummy and Daddy and say Mum and Dad?

My DS is 7, 8 in January. We are very much still Mummy and Daddy. I love being Mummy because in so many ways he is growing up and I’m really noticing it all the more how mature and independent he is becoming since he started the juniors. But I notice that his friends say Mum and Dad, as do my friends kids, some of which are younger.

I remember my Dad not wanting me to stop calling him Daddy (he was a single Dad) and I got to an age (maybe around 7 or 8) where I felt embarrassed by it and I remember other kids making fun of me for it too until he eventually relented!

Maybe kids aren’t as mean as they were in the 90s but I just have been wondering. I asked DS if he wanted to call us Mum and Dad and if he did that was fine but he said he doesn’t want to.

What she did yours start saying Mum and Dad?

15 and 13 and they still call me mumma from time to time - or mumza which I have no idea where it came from! Dad is dad though and only daddy when they want something!!

We have always been Mum and Dad to them

Canibearsed · 05/10/2023 22:42

My parents were Mummy and Daddy until they died .
My children call me Mummy or Mother and refer to me as Mum .
All in their 20s

My 14 year old still calls me Mummy. My husband is a mix of Dad and Daddy. Fil refers to Mil as Mummy when talking about her to my DH, makes my skin crawl!

11 year old DS calls me mummy but mum in front of his friends. 13 year old DD still calls me mummy and doesn't give a shit who hears. I'm fine with either. I always thought it weird when adults call their parents mummy and daddy but I can see my daughter being one of those 😂

My DS (12), and DD (10) still call us mummy and daddy.

DS's 2 best friends still call their parents mummy and daddy too.

Inner city London schools don't seem to have changed this!

My twin daughters are nearly 6 and I'm 'Mum' most of the time, 'Mummy' when Twin 2 is tired and 'Mumma' to Twin 1 when she's being affectionate. I've also had my first name a lot!

15, 13, and 10...still Mummy and Daddy. Sometimes I am "mumma"....not sure where that one came from but I quite like it

Cantbelieveit101 · 06/10/2023 03:48

I'm in the minority with you. I much prefer Mum, and don't know why people have a fondness for Mummy.

4 year old mostly says Mum/Dad now (probably about 75% of the time).

1 year old (21 months) is about 50-50 - but she's also copying her brother.

Surprised that we are such major outliers! So interesting!

FatBanana · 06/10/2023 07:27

13 and 14 they still call me mummy! But say mum to their friends.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 06/10/2023 08:36

Ds changed to mum and dad around 15, dd at 17 (I thought she would say mummy and daddy forever.) Youngest 2 DDs still say mummy and daddy, they are 13 and 10.

LizzieW1969 · 06/10/2023 08:54

My DDs still call us ‘Mummy and Daddy’ at 14 and 11, though they speak of us as ‘Mum and Dad’ at school. DD1 occasionally calls me ‘Mother’, however. 😂

StrawberryWater · 06/10/2023 08:55

Ds still calls me mummy most of the time but dad is just dad unless he wants a sandwich or a snack. Ds is 9.

dizzydizzydizzy · 06/10/2023 08:57

My DCs still call us mummy and daddy and they are 19 and 21.

I can remember switching to Mum and Dad when I was in primary school because I thought mummy and daddy were too babyish.

AbbeyGailsParty · 06/10/2023 09:00

Friend still addresses her 85 year old mother as mummy. Father was daddy until his death recently. They referred to each other as mummy and daddy. Sounds really weird to me but 🤷‍♀️
