MIL asking got her clothes back

bedorbrowse · 02/10/2023 18:51

Okay so I have gone from a Size 12 to a Size 16 in a matter of 9 months Blush

MIL gave me a load of clothes last year (a size 16 at the time!), saying she'd never fit in a size 12 again

MIL is now a Size 12! She approached me on Sunday at a family get together and said 'those clothes I gave you, they won't fit you now. Can I have them back please?'

I stupidly said yes... forgetting I have given them to my sister!

What do I do? MIL is quite blunt and won't be impressed...

But I do feel she was unreasonable to ask me for them in front of people

Sorry, it isn't clear from my post

Last year, I was a size 12 and MIL gave me a load of stuff in a size 12

This year I am a size 16 and MIL has slimmed down to a 12, after being a 16 for ages

Can you get them back from your sister?

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 02/10/2023 18:53

Just explain you've given them to your sister. If she said she'd 'never' fit into them, you couldn't know she would be wanting them back. Sounds like a bit of not-very-stealthy showcasing her weightloss at your expense.

She wears them

So? She can stop wearing them. Ask for them back to avoid the issues with your MiL.
If you’d just told her that you didn’t have the anymore when she asked then that would be fine, but you didn’t. You said you’d give them back so now you have to.

In future, don’t promise things you can’t fulfill.

She was really quite rude

Although in private so not in front of anyone, she also said 'oh I've got some maxi dresses for you for the summer next year. It's all I lived in when I was that size! No point in buying anything nice then'

Ask for them back

FreddieDeLaHay · 02/10/2023 19:00

They are no longer 'her' clothes
The clothes stopped being hers when she gave them to you and they
now belong to your sister

Maybe DH could explain this to her?

Magenta82 · 02/10/2023 19:01

Get them back from your sister. It isn't OK to give away other people's stuff.

The clothes weren't on loan, they were given to her. That's what the decider is. Once you give someone something it becomes theirs.
So no.

What a boot!

They stopped belonging to MIL when she gave them to you

End of

They were yours to donate

I thought they were... MIL was very much like 'here, have them' when they were given to me

They weren't borrowed

Just tell her. Get it over with so you don’t stress about it, just text her “Hi MIL, since you ask for your clothes back I realised that I have actually already passed them on. Sorry”.

If she’s rude to you then who care if she’s annoyed by it.

That's a really well worded text. Thank you - sending that on!
